The Amazing Spider-Man The Box Office Thread

Lol...i love how fanboys acting like Nolans Bat Movies where the Holy crale of all Filmmaking:woot:

The movies are good, but nowhere near as great as everybody is lying and making it out to be.
Spidey will whipe the floor with TDKR next Year.

i love how people shrug off realism with ignorant bickering about how they think Webb is a better director than Nolan.

Get real, i'll back it up with Inception. you have to admit that movie was brilliant

Inception was 'meh' with too much exposition and not enough character development, memento was much better with a fraction of the budget. A very overrated movie.

do you mean supporting character development? Cobb, Mal, Ariadne, and Fischer had brilliant detail in their characters. the rest was the operating team so its understandable as to why they didnt get the same detail. i love Inception mainly because its original

I've told you this before and I'll tell you again, Quit acting like getting IM2 numbers was some mediocre feat that most every movie gets. You want me post the breakdown of the past ten years on how many movies were "lucky enough to get IM2 numbers?" You want me to show you how many of them were comicbook movies? If the Avengers gets IM2 numbers, then it's a huge win for them.

It's odd that you've written all this, given that we seem to agree.

underdeveloped in that (with the except of cobb) I didn't know (or care) what the secondary characters motivations were. without hijacking this thread and turning it into an inception discussion I'm sure you've heard these complaints more than once.

You guys are really under-estimating Star Trek, Spidey will be in trouble from being around Star Trek 2 not the other way around.

The first film generated tons of good will for the franchise and the sequel will have massive hype.

You should save that joke for when you take your "act" to vegas.

You forgot the 40th Ice Age or whatever they are on, the new Bond, and Hobbit.

The hobbit will make the usual numbers the LOTR movies made I'm sure. As for Bond, BO figures like any other business is important but it's not worth concerning one's self about. 2012 marks the 50th anniversary of the Bond movies and EON are supposed to be doing a year long hype celebration, which is good news for me as I'm a major Bond fan but the primary concern is, Bond 23 just needs to be an awesome movie. It will make money and Bond movies will continue to get made for years.

That said, Spider-Man has nothing to worry about with Star Trek and if Catwoman is as big of a draw as the Joker then they really shouldn't worry about TDKR.

IM2

$321m - domestic
$622m - worldwide

that is pretty darn impressive

----

for the record

with ledger, and the viral advertising and all the hype

TDK - overseas - $468m
SM3 - overseas - $558m

if hobbit makes 2012 it will be the number 1 movie of the year, no question.
I think spidey and bats being so close together (2 weeks?) means they will both chump into each others final take.

Sony are going to market the crap out of TASM. Honestly, the numbers it will rake in will surprise many of you here.

That's debatable but I wouldn't be surprised.

Definitely. For the sake of genuine interest, I'm pretty excited to see how next summer's BO takings will play out.

can only talk for myself but I saw TDK a lot of times now if spidey was showing around the same time then some of the repeat viewings I gave to TDK I would have given spidey instead. but that's me as a spidey fan, for the general audience it will come down to which is the more enjoyable movie. hype can bring you to the cinema but only a good/enjoyable movie can make you return for second viewings.

sony's current show piece 3D movie is cloudy with meatballs (the movie they bundle to sell 3D TV's). I think it's safe to say ASM with have the entire weight of the sony marketing team behind it.

I look at this movie similar to where batman begins was when it came out. While not nearly as negatively received as batman & robin, spider-man 3 has a bad rep. And its only gonna be 5 years since its release compared to the 8 yrs between B&R and begins.

So like begins i actually think its sequel might be the super blockbuster giant not the 1st one. Depending on if this movie has great word of mouth like begins did however.

it's not the same thing at all.

batman begins:

1) BB was coming off the back of a movie that flopped, BADLY.

2) BB is coming off the back of a movie that was PANNED
B&R
metacritic - 28%
rottentomato - 13%

3) there was a seven year gap between BB and B&R (out of sight out of mind) and people's lasting memory of batman was a terrible movie that flopped.

4) the sales of B&R (video)were diasaterous, suggesting the public didn't want it in their homes.
-------

the amazing spider-man:

1) ASM is coming off the back of a movie (SM3) that was MASSIVE. the movie made more money than TDK overseas.

2) ASM is coming off the back of a movie (SM3) that recieved lukewarm ratings, it wasn't panned, the critics didn't 'HATE' it. check RT/metacritic
SM3
metacritic - 59%
rottentomato - 63%

3) ASM follows 4 years after SM3. spider-man is still fresh and relevent in the GA minds

4) the sales of SM3 dvd/blu ray (despite what some people would have you believe) was very strong indeed (stronger than Star trek for instance a movie some people on this board think will out sell TAS) which suggests the people weren't nearly put off by the movie as they bought it for their homes after the dust had settled.

BB and ASM not the same thing at ALL.

also it's worth mentioning that if TF3 is a massive hit then that will show up all the talk of 'a movie being panned critically affecting the movie that follows it' as NONSENSE and I think TF3 is going to be MASSIVE. if ASM is a good movie it will make loads of money regardless of what went before it.

Inception was absolutely brilliant...although I do still prefer TDK
as much as I love the Nolan series though...I do want TASM to beat TDKR out...doubt itll happen though

didn't hate inception but didn't love it.
memento
prestige
TDK
BB

all nolan movies I own and prefer to inception. not buying inception as the movie was a chore and I can't see myself watching it again.

That defenitely seems evident so far, just like with S-M3. We have 2 pictures already 1 year and a half before the films release.

Agreed. Hell, Garfield and Stone were pretty much promoting the movie before priciple photography commenced.

garfield featuring prominently in social network will also have helped to raise his profile in the eyes of the GA.

Yep. He's recieved massive exposure since the release of that film.

Truthfully,it's hard to say whether or not "Amazing" will be the top film of 2012. Not only are there so many other good movies coming out,but it might be a case of "been there, done that." When Raimi's trilogy came out we hadn't seen that before,so it was new. And as an audience we really became invested in Tobey as Spider-man/Peter Parker. Plus, some of the hardcore fans might still be a bit pissed about how Sony dumped Raimi and co. and just started all over. I think the film will do well,of course, but I don't see it putting up huge numbers like Spider-man 1 or 3.
I think Nolan's Batman series might even take a step down as well. He's a great filmmaker and BB/TDK were great films, but I think that TDK was just SO good that there's just nowhere for the series to go but down. Not saying the The Dark Knight Rises will be horrible, but I don't expect it to be as good,or make as much as TDK. Plus,TDK had Batman's greatest/most popular villain in it(The Joker). While Catwoman and Bane are good villains, they don't command the attention that someone like the Joker would. Same goes with Spidey. The Lizard is one of my favorites, but I don't see the films really making serious bank with secondary villains(although the series SHOULD be about Spidey/Parker not the baddies). Not just saying this as a Venom fan,but if this reboot series decides to use Venom and the symbiote storyline, and this time do it in a dark and serious way, then I could see that particular Spidey films doing spectacular(no pun intended)business. Since Venom is still THE villain most people wanna see(even non comic book/Spidey fans have told me this).

Spider-man does not have a chance against Batman 3, it will get smashed hard. What Spider-man needs to do is have a good gross, but more importantly, have Good WOM/Reviews, which would do good for the sequel.
