Comics The Build to ASM #700

I'm pretty well connected with the shadier side of digital comics, and I did not see these issues until Weds with all all the other new releases. I am talking about the full issues, not the cell phone camera images.

The entire issue leaked on 4chan on Monday night. Not cell phone pics of a few pages, the entire issue was scanned.

I haven't been reading the past issues, but I think I'm going to pick up #700 just to see what all the fuss is about.

Avenging Spider-Man 15.1 serves as an epilogue to ASM 700 just in case you want to get that too. I only say that because it supposedly was under-ordered and if you go to your shop and see only a few copies left and don't pick it up the first time around, you might have to wait for it's reprint in February.

You know, the story might be just fine, but Ramos' artwork is just terrible in my opinion. I know, I'm an old geezer pushing 50, but I like to look at the artwork in my comic stories, and know what's going on. I can't with Ramos. Takes me right out of any enjoyment of the story. The artist in Avenging 15.1 was great. Enjoyed that issue, and made it where the recap of what's been happening, very enjoyable. Wish Marvel would put artists who know anatomy, and can draw characters who look like themselves thru the whole issue, on their Flag ship titles.
Just my opinion. Won't be buying 700, till I find it in a cheap bin somewhere down the road. (gotta keep my complete Spidey runs going, ya know) :-)

Sounds like somebody has their eye on a 6th printing of ASM 700 next June....:o

Haha, yeah, I gave up caring about what printing is what, or what variant is what, many years ago. I find all the issues for no more than $1 in bins at shows, or local comic shops. Or I find people selling lots on ebay for cheap. I'm cheap, and live on limited funds these days. Sucks, cause I sure miss the ol' Wednesday comic store trip, but such is life. I'm happy still, so there's that. (could be the pain meds!!!) D'oh!

Ah yes, I ordered that, too. Will I be able to understand anything in either one if I haven't been following the series? LOL. I mean, I'm a big Spidey fan and a comics guy but I haven't read a Spider-Man comic in quite a while.

thank you, 99... with you all the way on the above...

ASM 699 explains everything in flashbacks. 700 just has the conclusion and Avenging 15.1 shows some previous stuff as well but doesn't go in depth as 699 did. If you can get your hands on 698 and 699, pick them up too.

Are they really that essential?

and it was Sh!7

I'm done with Spider-Man.
It wasn't so bad

It's the final new comic I'm getting, bye bye newer comics, I won't need to read Superior Spider-Man
Except if Ock teams up with Punisher, I'm interested in the idea

Are they really that essential?

No. If you read 700, they recap everything you NEED to know. I mean 698 and 699 have more stuff in them that would be nice to know, but to understand the story, all you need is 700.

Also, on the Ramos front, I would say that he has definitely improved since his early 2000 days with "Peter Parker/Spider-Man" but he still has some serious anatomy issues. One shot that really stands out is near the end of the comic when Spider-Man is standing over the defeated Doc Ock. Spider-Man is slightly angled and standing straight up...and his arms are 2 times too long. It's a really bad shot and I cannot believe Ramos let it go. Ergh.

This does not surprise me. Marvel has been using the deaths of characters as a cheap ploy to gain interest far more than they used to. Killing PP is not neccessary and it has put me off of buying the comic even more. First OMD and now this.:whatever:

It's interesting to note that the satellite issue is more entertaining
Read Avenging Spider-Man 15.1, the epilogue is better than the main event

But for.....
How is it that Ock jumps from someone acknowledging the genius of Spider-Man in Amazing 648 to be someone repeatedly demented and conceited on how his intellect is far SUPERIOR to that of his enemy, he kinda says Spider-Man -the guy who outsmarted him repeatedly through their history- is an idiot compared to Ock

More like a Narcissistic Dweeb :p
I kept reading Ock's thoughts in Alfred Molina's voice, then he had to describe his voice sounding like what he said, it got me thinking of how Michael Bell provided his voice in the Incredible Hulk animated series of the 80s, then in Spider-Friends

Finally read Amazing Spider-Man #700. I must admit that it did leave a little to be desired, but otherwise, the end result was pretty darn good. The final moment when Otto(Peter) tried to use the Golden bot on Spider-Man(Otto) and it failed, I was just thinking "Parker Luck).

I must admit, the relationship between the Superior Peter and Mary Jane i'm not looking forward too. I actually liked her being the friend. However the new costume from Avenging Spider-Man looks pretty cool. The claws on the fingers and toe look cool....but then again, so did the Stinger from The Other.

ah well, I look forward to see where this story goes from here. I doubt Otto will be the Superior personality for too long though. Dare I say it, but I expect Peter to be back in control very soon.

If Slott is smart, he won't try to drag this story out longer than it should be run.

OK, so I finished issue 700. Honestly, I don't know what to think. It was a bit numbing. If that is the way Pete goes and stays dead, that's a pretty crummy and horrific way to go. Imagine being in one of your worst enemies dying body while he has yours and no one knows. :csad:

But, as others have said, I don't think it's permanent. I agree with runawayboulder about that "instinct" comment. And then there's the golden octobot.

But, here's the thing, and someone on one of these threads touched on it and it was also touched on in the issue. With all these bodies and memories and brain waves, what makes you you? My feeling it would be your soul. In this issue, they specifically called out the droplet of Hydroman that contained his soul, just as they had done with Sandman a while back. Notice they could have said just said the machine worked and captured Hydroman, but they went that extra step to mention his soul.

So then, where was the mention of Pete's soul in those final pages that Ock's body died, supposedly containing Pete? Furthermore, Ock's body did die for three minutes in which Pete seemed to have gone to Heaven and be with those he had lost. If that had happened for those three minutes, don't you think Dan would have shown Pete back there at the end, reunited with his loved ones and earning his rest? :cwink:

I felt the ending was pretty underwhelming and possibly undermines the entire point of Superior (if I understand the point in the first place lol). To me it doesn't simply question if Otto's change of heart was sincere, but seems to suggest that it's more a result of Peter's mind-screw he gave Ock. Up until then Ock never really showed any meaningful capacity towards change and it looks like Slott and co. just want us to take it as granted that Ock sincerely wants this.

To me it seems somewhat forced. It's a shame because there are some interesting things you can do with a different Spider-man to Peter Parker. However, I think they've just went completely the wrong way about it (by that I mean the whole body swap gag rather than the lackluster explanation for why Ock might suddenly want to be a superhero).

Though saying that I'm still planning on giving Superior the benefit of the doubt for a few issues. If it doesn't look promising after that then I'll move on.

So did they kill Parker? What's going on? Was that really the ending to the Amazing series?

Peter remained trapped in Ock's dying body after several failed attempts at reversing the mind swap. In his last moments he shared all of his major Spidey/Peter moments as Spider-Man throughout the years. This convinced Ock to live a more heroic life.

In Avenging SM 15.1 there was a small clue (as far as I'm concerned) that Peter is still in his mind with Ock when the latter clotheslines a mugger that he had no interest in dealing with to begin with. He thinks to himself that "that was instinct...I suppose..."

Peter's still in there somewhere....
