Comics The Build to ASM #700

Well, maybe Peter finally is going away for a long, long time...

" Life goes on. Peter Parker fans will sort of fade away over the months and years, and you'll have a bunch of people who only know the new cast."

"This has been in the works for a few years now, and the plan always was to make this the last issue and make it a definitive end for the character. It's been 50 years,a helluva good run. The 700th issue happening around the same time was just sort of serendipitous.

This type of thing has been done in comics before during the Silver Age when Julie Schwartz, Gardner Fox, John Broome and the guys at DC brought out new versions of classic characters like the Flash and Green Lantern. That's the kind of worldbuilding scenario we're playing with."

While I am a Wolverine and X-Men fan, who doesn't like Spider-Man? And by Spider-Man I mean Peter Parker. Its just sad to me that this might in fact be his last comic becasue he is simply just a great character. I truly hope that by the next Spider-Man movie Peter will be back in Marvel comics....because his "replacement" just seems lame.

I don't like Peter Parker. He's a senseless lower who's wasted most of his life for almost no reason, and rather than just man up to it like Batman or someone would, he just continuously whines about his "luck".

Wow....really? I wouldn't call what the character has done for the past 50 years a waste. Saving lives, saving the world, making people laugh...that has to be worth something, doesn't it? I like Peter Parkers characeter, whinning aside, because it just seems so much more real than......I don't know....Bruce Wayne.

One could argue that Peter's job at Horizion has made him more like Bruce Wayne or Tony Stark now. He has money and he has been putting his brain to use for once.

Which honestly is the best thing they've done for the character in years.

Are these guys totally brain-dead? When DC revamped Flash and Green Lantern the comics had been dead for a good 10 years. Same with Marvel's revisions of the Torch, Cap and Sub-mariner, aside from like 3 issues each around 1954. Spider-Man obviously doesn't fit into the category.

I'm interested in reading this final ASM story. I've read some of Slott's stuff and haven't really been able to get into it, but I'm curious about this story. I know he's been setting this up for years now, but can anyone tell me where this final arc starts? I kinda just want to read this final arc, so I'm not referring to some of the foreshadowing in Spider-Island (which I've read) and whatnot. Thanks!

And I completely agree.

You could get away with just starting at 698, where the Dying Wish arc started, or you can start at Danger Zone (Starts with 695 and leads into Dying Wish, also an excellent arc and it shows the gold octobot that plays a part in Dying Wish). If you haven't read ASM 600, I'd say to read that as well, that issue kind of starts this whole thing and gets referenced in Dying Wish. Other than that Spider Island you read, and that is really the only other piece of the puzzle besides Ends of the Earth (ASM 682-687, AvSM 8)

I doubt the sincerity of this. If you remember Dan Buckley said Captain America was killed off due to irrelevance and, "He's very dead right now.".

Anyone who believes Peter will stay dead for more than two years, well I have a Jean Grey/Superman/Captain America/Human Torch/Reed Richards/Colossus/Cyclops/Hawkeye/Flash/Green Arrow/Green Lantern/etc/etc/etc to sell you.

Though some stay dead for longer than others. Jean Grey is still dead.

Didn't Batman "die", get replaced by Nightwing, and come back recently as well too?

Aloha,
Okay, now that I've read #700, I'M BACK.I'm a big fan of Fringe. There was an episode where William Bell took over the body and consciousness of Olivia, but Olivia's consciousness was still inside her, but alseep if you will. This is what this looks like to me with Doc Ock/Peter.Ock is going to do everything he can to prove himself SUPERIOR to Peter. This should make for some interesting reading, but NO WAY, all of the super heroes are going to not suspect that this is not the same guy they've known for years.First off, Ock has no sense of humor. That's going to be a big giveaway that something is not right.Going back to Fringe. Peter(in Fringe) was erased from the timeline, but he kept coming through.During the Clone Saga, we were also lead to believe that the Peter we thought we knew wasn't him at all.Wackers pulling our leg on this simply because ALL Spider-Man cartoons and movies will still have Peter Parker so the idea that somehow Peter is gone for good, just doesn't hold water. That would mean that a homicidal maniac(Ock) who tried to destroy the world is now a hero. It would mean that he gets away with all of his crimes. I just can't see that happening. If Slott is writing, I'm still in for the ride.

Y'know what would be funny?

if Peter fights for control of his own consciousness with Doc Ock for 3 years worth of comics until, finally, he returns to his own body.

Only to slip on a banana peel, die and never be seen again. :o

And yet they can't bring back Nightcrawler? Lame.

Huh? Did 700 come out this week?

Honestly I don't see a problem with what they're doing.

The ending of ASM 700 could have been better, yes, but I'm excited to see what Slott is going to do with this. And Stegman being on art for Superior doesn't hurt either.

There's one minor thing that bugged me about 700...
it seems like every time we have one of these epic Spider-Man final battles, all of the supporting cast are rounded up into a famous landmark. It happened with the end of the Clone Saga, same thing with Final Chapter....both happened with the Bugle where every relevant supporting cast member are dragged into the way to become nothing more than scenery. No one really served any purpose of being there. This was about 2 men, Peter and Otto. Why did we need MJ, May, JJJ, JJJSR, Robbie, Norah, Horizon folks, ect there?

The ending would have had a better effect if it ended with Peter luring Ock to either the warehouse where Spidey confronted the burglar or the bridge where Gwen dies....both landmarks serve as monuments to Spider-Man's biggest tragedies. So when Peter did the perma-mind link with Ock one last time, the scenery would have helped the moment.

It leaked.

No, it didn't really leak. Diamond sent it and AvSM 15.1 out a week early because of the Christmas holiday. Unfortunately, a bunch of comic stores chose not to follow the "wait til next week to put these out" instructions.

Actually it still leaked 2 days before those stores started putting them out, so he was right.
