Captain Marvel The Captain Marvel User Review Thread (TAG SPOILERS!!!)

I tempered my expectations when the reviews began to surface. But I really loved this movie. The movie was a little slow to get started, but since I had read some reviews beforehand, I guess I was prepared for it and it didn't really bother me. I loved all the easter eggs and the continued MCU world building and I thought it was really joyful. I can understand not thinking it was the greatest movie or that it was just average, but I am having a hard time understanding those that think this movie was terrible. But too each their own.

Well it turns out I was very wrong. Since the teaser was released I've thought this looked bland and Brie looked wooden. With the RT being in the low 80s and Stuckman saying what I expected and giving it a C I went into this expecting a bland film and a wooden performance from Brie. But I loved this film. I've got some minor problem with it such as the editing and shooting of the action scenes, and Coulson was wasted, but that's about the only issues I had with the film. This is definitely my favorite origin story in the MCU. It was so much fun.

And the skrulls,
I adored what they did with them and actually nearly teared up when the skrull children and refugees revealed themselves. Prior to that I really wanted to believe Talos was telling the truth. I liked the guy, and liked what Mendelssohn was doing, but I was afraid Talos was lying, and that itd turn out he was using Carol to get to the power source just so he could continue the war and win it. So it was a huge relief when it was revealed that he really was a loving father and was just trying to save his people and really wanted to ally with Carol. I'd love to see Talos and his family and his people again.

In terms of my own enjoyment this film gets a 9/10 from me.

Wow @Marvolo , I’m as pleasantly shocked by your reaction as you, haha. I love when skeptics come out won over by a film. I’m getting the impression that’s about to happen with me and Shazam, lol.

Saw it for the 2nd time today, and while I was expecting to lower my initial 9/10 grade, I'm still maintaining it there !
Also, I don't trust Stuckman (pretty much ceased to follow him) since his The Last Jedi excuses/praise...

Didn't expect to love this movie as much as I did. Brie was awesome and had fantastic chemistry with SLJ. The cast did a stellar job overall, I was really surprised by how this particular group of Skrulls was depicted, and Carol's arc I felt was very satisfying. Also expected the movie to be more formulaic going by the more negative reviews. 8.5/10

I hate this meme, but...

Good, solid, second tier MCU. Larson, Jackson, and Mendhelson are very good. I'd like more Annette Benning too. Great Stan Lee tribute at the beginning.
Biggest negative for me were some badly lit, choppily edited action scenes. Boden & Fleck should have hired perhaps an experienced second unit director for these set-pieces.

Really enjoyed this. There's a LOT to like here. I don't think Carol had any "character development" or a real story arc, and ultimately some of the supporting characters seem more interesting/important, but I still really dug the film and it's another great addition to the MCU.

Small gripe – the scene with
Carol and Maria talking in Maria's house
was some of the worst cinematography in the MCU. I legit hated the look of that scene. The performances were great, and ultimately the cinematography doesn't matter in the context of that scene, but ugh. Hated it.

Finally, it seems like they spent all of their CGI budget to make Sam Jackson look younger. He looked amazing, but the rest of the CGI (particularly CM flying around and the mohawk helmet) looked awful.

I apparently forgot to post here when I saw it on Wednesday.

I went into this with some skepticism since the trailers didn't look great, so I was probably the least hyped I've been for an MCU film since the first Ant-Man. Just as back then I was positively surprised.

The film was very enjoyable and I found that Brie brought a lot to the character. She had a lot of sass and portrayed a lot of emotion with subtle means. Fury was also great, as expected, and the de-aging was so good that I actually forgot about it most of the time. The two also worked very well together. Mendelsohn was also very good and the plot around the Skrull was interesting and took some turns I didn't expect.

I've seen some comments that say that the movie started less good but worked itself up, but for me I actually enjoyed the film the most in the first two acts. The third act isn't bad, like how some other films have fallen off hard, but something about the climax didn't quite grab me as much as the character work previously in the film.

I have some issues here and there, but there was only one thing I thought was really bad.
The way they had Fury lose his eye didn't work at all for me. I don't think it should have been a comic alien thing and I don't think the Flerken fits the TWS comment about the last time he trusted someone.

I don't think they should show when he lost his eye at all (it's a little bit of the Solo problem), but if they had to do it I think it should have been some real spy stuff to go better together with his character. I'm not saying it's a major issue, but I just really didn't like it.

This goes right into my personal group of underrated MCU movies with Thor and Age of Ultron.
Not sure if you saw what I posted in the Rotten Tomatoes/critics thread, but I just said CM's RT/critic rating is tracking along with those two films' numbers. Both are flawed movies that are actually pretty decent MCU offerings.

Yup read that earlier!

Just saw it today and omg this is really bland.
It’s like watching a bad TV movie.
What a waste of time and money

Finally saw it today and while I did enjoy it overall I am honestly a little underwhelmed because I wanted to love it considering how much I have liked the majority of the marketing for it. I came out of this definitely liking Brie Larson's Carol Danvers though. Loved her sass and her cocky personality, especially in the beginning and while her scenes with SLJ were great too something was still missing with this movie and I can't quite put my finger on it. Maybe its the fact that for the most part they do play it really safe with this movie, although there are some really cool ideas dealing with the Skrulls and the Kree, but I didn't think it was fleshed out as much as it could have been. Ben Mendelssohn is great here though and besides SLJ definitely one of the strongest characters in the movie. Jude Law and Lashana Lynch were good too, but like I said before I didn't really get a good grasp on who there characters were because they just aren't that well developed IMO. Speaking of underdeveloped I still don't see the reason why Lee Pace, Clark Gregg and Djimon Hounsou were in this other than fan service, because you could have honestly took them out of the movie and not a single thing would change. I thought the action sequences were fine, although its a shame that most of the cool stuff was already given away in the trailers/tv spots and the close quarters stuff was somewhat poorly lit at times. Also, Goose was cute and all, but I wouldn't have called her a scene stealer like Groot or Rocket from the first GOTG.

I liked it. It's on the same level as Age of Ultron with me.

It felt a little fast for me but with a second viewing I'm sure it will feel more fleshed out. I never really got into Carol Danvers as a kid, but I've read the Civil War comics with her and the Uncanny X-Men when she shares a body with Rogue and it seems like the characterization is on point. My Dad, who knows next to nothing of Carol, liked her and the movie. But I digress.

It didn't feel like the movie pushed any sort of feminist agenda (which some online fanboy losers seem to think). She drew strength from her past and ability to get back up even when she failed, which is something not unique to women. Anyone can connect to the feeling of persevering and being triumphant. I liked the plot twists and it definitely helped the movie create the character of Carol, along with her new suit colours.

The humour was fun and I did enjoy it, but I'm not happy with the way they chose to get rid of Fury's eye. It felt like a disservice to his character.

I'm excited to see what Carol brings to the table in Endgame, however, I want it to be about the original 6. Carol has her own movies coming up, which she will likely be the star of, and I just want a proper send off to the originals. It's their movie.

I thought the movie was fun and I loved seeing Carol go Binary (even though Binary isn't a thing in this movie) on the Kree. She's a powerful chick and I dig her personality.

7/10. I'd like to see a Carol in future movies where her humor isn't used like a Chandler shield for her deeper thoughts.

Wasn't expecting a great film and don't think it is after seeing it. However, it was really enjoyable and despite its flaws, made me a fan of the character and I'm excited to see Larson as CM in End Game and beyond (think she's really likeable in the role).

Honestly I went in with my expectations too high and because of that I was let down. It was still a very good movie and I enjoyed it, but it was not as amazing as I anticipated.
I'm still thinking DC is the winner of female led super hero films with Wonder Woman.
The movie looked great and I liked the character and look forward to seeing Carol in Endgame.
More thoughts in the review vid.

I liked it without being floored by it. I think Carol will be a very good addition to the ensemble. Ultimately I wouldn't be in a rush to see another solo effort.

I'd love to see Talos appear again. What a swerve the Skrulls turned out to be and it dumped what I expected for Phase 4 on its head. Surely there will be no secret invasion now? I'm actually fine with that as it doesn't appeal to me. They're going into the unknown now which is exciting.

When people say it felt like Ultron, does that mean there’s too much setup for future movies in the MCU?

Are people really comparing it to AoU? I don't get it. A better comparison would be with Thor. A smaller scale movie starring a cocky space warrior who gets lost on Earth and is eventually
betrayed by someone they trusted.

Heck, even the climactic fight takes place above a desert, just like in Thor. :o

Well, in my opinion it’s like neither. Thor was bad, and AoU was, while pretty good, still enough meh to not be a good comparison. And I wouldn’t call it small scale either. And...I think you should use a spoiler tag for something in that paragraph?

Well, I didn't say who it is that does that thing to her, but fair enough.
