The Catwoman/Selina Kyle Casting Thread - Part 2

Yeah, I wouldn't complain if we got Kirby but I think we can go a bit more unconventional or exciting.

I can't help but shake my head at all these "Vanessa Kirby is a bland pick" comments. Putting aside the praise she got for her turn in The Crown and her role in Fallout, Kirby's gotten a fair chunk of praise for years in the theater scene in the UK. Hell, Variety called Kirby "the outstanding stage actress of her generation, capable of the most unexpected choices" back in 2016.

Honestly there's only a couple of potential candidates that would maybe excite me more for landing Catwoman.

I really really doubt Dakota Johnson would get the part or even be a frontrunner, but I guess we'll have to wait and see, don't wanna open that can of worms again

It's not about generic picks IMO or even necessarily "thinking outside the box"- at least in regards to how we generally toss around names in this thread.

Reeves has a knack of casting character actors for his films, preferring to go for individuals that bring a certain level of nuance to their performances to help better embody the characters onscreen and the dynamics bouncing between the cast. Robert Pattinson is a perfect example of that and was a favorite for a number of us here for months because of that, even if some of us- including myself- didn't think he had a chance due to the repeatedly toted age range.

So names like Vanessa Kirby, Dakota Johnson, Lily James, Sonoya Mizuno and Ana de Armas? They all make sense as candidates that Reeves (and the studio) would be interested in seeing audition for the part. They might land the part, they might not, because I think a big part of the final decision will come down to chemistry with Pattinson.

Agreed. There's some genuinely interesting small acting choices she makes in her scenes in Fallout that I found really elevated her portrayal from the average femme fatale.

On the one hand, I appreciate seeing fans actively wanting to see more diversity and representation on the big screen for once. On the other hand, I find it frustrating that so many people keep acting like Selina is decisively Cuban in all of her depictions, when comics have been bouncing back and forth on her ethnicity and origins for the past twenty-plus years.

Heck, I found out that she was briefly teased to be part Russian at one small point in the New 52 run and then nothing was done with that!

I'm all for a diverse cast but VK shouldn't be Catwoman because of her ethnicity?? I still have a friend who's upset about Black Canary lol. There wasn't any outrage when Katana's left out of the new Squad and BOP. Btw I actually suggested Zhang Zi Yi for Catwoman for Nolan's version 10 years ago lol, Asian kick ass female in a cat suit, with an accent.

Two names are not like the others and having seen Matt Reeves films and according to what you've described yes they all don't make sense at all. We have to agree to disagree here.
So it's hard to know what's really in Matt's mind, right?. But I'll keep going thinking about what I've seen and a certain trend that I'm seeing.
Regarding RP, Bosslogic brought his name and after that some people got educated in his filmography he was a favorite (so in reddit too) yes, the rest is revisionism.

I do think Sonoya Mizuno still has a good chance too. However I'm not sure I'd say she's totally more athletic than Kirby. Let's not forget that while Kirby might not have a background in dancing, she is about to star in a huge action film with a ton of stunts.

Eh, I think Mizuno's a strong fit for Catwoman in general personally. I do share a lot of the other favorites with you though, aside from Aubrey Plaza.

Kirby does seem like a kind of dull choice. Not that she'd be bad, it's just really safe and underwhelming after they went with Pattinson.

It's hard to explain. She gives me the impression that she would play a very basic Selina.

Maybe I should just lower my expectations for this character. I've never seen anyone praise Reeves' female characters, I'm not sure why I'm expecting him to get Selina right. We'll see

While I don't have a problem with most of the choices in this thread, I'm not really excited about most of them either. None of the Top 3 most suggested in this thread scream Selina to me, Ana de Armas, Vanessa Kirby (More of a Vicky Vale type to me) and Sonoya Mizuno (More of a Talia Al Ghul type to me), of the three I guess I'd go with Armas, but none of them really catch my attention for the role that much.

I think Emmy Rossum is the best choice. Still like Nina Dobrev, Kaya Scodelario, and even Aubrey Plaza better than those 3 too. Unfortunately most of my favorites for the role have been aged out of this new Batman movie.

Yeah, if I’m being honest... none of the names being thrown around really excite me. All of these actresses are talented but none of them quite feel like Selina to me. I’m honestly not sure who does.
