The Catwoman/Selina Kyle Casting Thread - Part 2

I'm all for Imogen Poots as Catwoman at this point.

Also, Elizabeth Debicki needs to play Samus Aran in a Metroid movie, for obvious reasons—she's got the look and the height!

To go with someone Hathaway like who is close in age with Robert Pattinson I would go with the following actresses then instead:

- Jodie Comer
- Dakota Johnson
- Vanessa Hudgens
- Zoe Kravitz
- Ana de Armas

No on Johnson. Not a fan of Hudgens either. Kravitz and Armas are great picks but after the whole Black Ariel backlash, I’m hesitant on dream-casting non-white actresses for the role (I know she’s been played by non-white actresses before but don’t expect the trolls to remember that). I really don’t want any controversy, especially the inevitable death threats these actresses may receive. We’re just not ready yet for race-changing major characters. Maybe when the country’s more diverse, and according to studies, it will happen, why else are white supremacists afraid these days? But for now, I guess I’m picking Comer.

Considering how many people started throwing a fit on Twitter over Vanessa Kirby since she's white, I honestly think things would swing the other way in this case meaning if you were to cast a white actress for the part people would complain about whitewashing even though she's ethnically ambiguous in the comics.
I honestly don't think there'd be that big of a controversy if you were to cast a PoC as Selina as long as the actress is beautiful and hot (Even if you're an absolute idiot you'd have to realize how dumb you look complaining about the prospect of seeing Zoe Kravitz, Ana de Armas or Adria Arjona in a skintight outfit acting sexy) I mean, some idiots would complain here and there but I think more people would complain if it was a white actress.

You’re using Twitter as a source. A haven for some of the worst liberal SJWs on the web. Basically, they’re the polar opposite of 4chan, a haven for conservative proud boys. As you can tell, I’m a registered moderate independent. I find both sides to be godawful.

Then there's no win in this case because you cast a white actress, morons on Twitter complain. You cast a black/latina/asian actress, morons on 4Chan complain.

I say just cast the best actress for the job and to hell with whatever the internet mobs say, although I'd personally lean a bit more into PoC because I just find the idea of a PoC Selina a bit more interesting. That being said... the only PoC I can actually see in the role are Adria Arjona, Sonoya Mizuno, Cristina Rodlo and maybe Zoe Kravitz as I really like her looks for the role but I'm not totally convinced of her range. Ana de Armas maybe but I reaaaally doubt she gets the role. The only reason I'd be weary of hoping for a PoC actress is because I can totally see the possibility of Riley Keough, Vanessa Kirby or Lily James giving overall better performances in the audition.

Either way Reeves is probably gonna cast on talent, not skin color.

To be honest I lowkey hope some complete unknown latina that hasn't been given enough chances to shine in Hollywood and has the perfect looks, sex appeal and acting chops gets the role just like how Danielle Melchior got the Ratcatcher gig. The career of the majority of the PoC actresses we've mentioned so far are going to be just fine, it'd be kinda cool to have someone just break big with this role.

There is a conundrum. We like to see actors be cast based on talent but at the same time we do like them to look comic-accurate yet we don’t want to deny an actor a role because he/she doesn’t fit the criteria of said role.

Then there’s only one solution: have a POC Catwoman in the DCEU and then make a solo
Joker-esque Catwoman movie and then have a white actress cast.

I mean... the thing is that Selina has beeen depicted sooooo many different ways physically. Sometimes she's been depicted as a blonde, sometimes with black hair, sometimes with long hair, sometimes with short hair, sometimes as dark skinned, sometimes as white, sometimes they hint at latina heritage, other times at italian heritage.

There's a lot of flexibility when it comes to her, more so than Bruce since Bruce has only ever been depicted as a caucasian tall handsome guy with black hair that can look like a very attractive billionaire playboy and a brooding mysterious serious tough guy. That's why there's a lot of flexibility with her casting, there isn't just "one look" for Selina whereas there pretty much was only one look for Bruce Wayne with very minor stylistic differences in facial features between artists.

I mean, other poc maybe, but I wouldn't necessarily want those actresses in the role. Not to say they aren't actractive in their own ways, but a different kind of attractive than I think of with Catwoman. If we're leaning into poc, my pick is more Lindsey Morgan, Nathalie Emmanuel.

As mentioned before, although people tend to lump them all together mostly because they share a common culture and tongue, Hispanics actually have diverse origins; some are brown (due to admixture w/ indigenous types); some are white; some are black, etc. de Armas, a Cuban, is largely if not entirely of white European stock by way of her Spaniard forebears. So, if a vocal minority has a problem with her "race" as you say, chalk it up to ignorance/lack of education on their part. General audiences likely won't care. That's beside the point, though. Internet trolls have been around since the 80s and they're clearly not going anywhere. Does that mean you cower to them, or let them get in the way of your process as a filmmaker? **** that! Let Reeves cast whomever he sees fit.

I personally like the idea of catwoman going to a WOC. This is the direction Marvel is going in (just a generally more diverse, inclusive slate) and I think it'll pay off for them in the box office. It'd be cool to see DC also look to the future in this regard, rather than stagnate. If it's going to a white woman, I'd like to see Vanessa Kirby, I think she's great and did a good job in Hobbs and Shaw. If DC does go with a WOC though, Sonoya, Ana, Zoe, and Nathalie are my top choices. Either way, as long as she's a talented actress who looks good in a body suit, fans will be happy I'd reckon

*looks at Aquaman, Flash, Perry White, Deadshot and Black Canary*

Yeeeeeeeaaaahhhh....

I'm still on the Lily James train, but Vanessa Kirby is looking more appealing every day. Gaite Jansen of Peaky Blinders fame would kill as well even if she doesn't stand a chance at nabbing the part.

For sure DC has been doing a good job too. Hope they continue. I trust Reeves will cast well. An absolute newcomer would be cool to see too.

I can easily picture Gaite as Selina saying this to Pattinson's Bruce.

Don't really care what race Selina is. She's been played by a black woman on TV, "Cuban" in the comics, white in movies, I think if any character is going to be race-bent without much fuss it would be her since there already is a precedent for it in a way.

There will always be some segment of people who complain about a comic book casting for a variety of reasons. Best thing a studio can do is make sure whoever they cast that is against the grain truly fits the spirit of the character, then what can people really complain about at that point?

Comer would be great. She's one of my top choices as well.

I still don't get the Vanessa Hudgens rumors, she's like Hallmark talented and a bit too on the nose regarding looks in reference to Catwoman.

Lily James would be Anne Hathaway 2.0. Please no. (..and I loved Anne but it would be such a bore.)

Just throwing out a couple of names that I haven't seen mentioned before:

Jessica Rothe (I feel like she'd nail the playful side of the character)

Emma Roberts (haven't seen her in much, but think she could bring a proper neurotic quality to the character)

Sophie Turner (I know some comic fans don't like her, but I could see her as Catwoman personally, if she's open to playing another character after Jean Grey)
