Julie Plec to Direct, Exec Produce CW's 'Roswell' Reboot
Julie Plec is ready to make her pilot directing debut.

The Vampire Diaries and Originals favorite has joined The CW's untitled Roswell reboot and will direct the pilot and serve as an executive producer should the drama move to series.

The project is based on the Roswell High book series by Melinda Metz. The Originals writer Carina Adly MacKenzie penned the pilot and will now reunite with Plec on Roswell.

‘Roswell’: Jeanine Mason Cast As the Lead Of the CW Reboot Pilot
Reluctantly returning to her tourist-trap hometown of Roswell, New Mexico, Liz Ortecho (Mason), a jaded biomedical researcher and the daughter of undocumented immigrants, is haunted by a tragic incident. She discovers a shocking truth about her teenage crush who is now a police officer: He’s an alien who has kept his unearthly abilities hidden his entire life. She protects his secret as the two reconnect and begin to investigate his origins, but when a violent attack and long-standing government cover-up point to a greater alien presence on Earth, the politics of fear and hatred threaten to expose him and destroy their deepening romance.

CW's 'Roswell' Reboot Rounds Out Cast With Nathan Parsons, Tyler Blackburn
The Originals' Nathan Parsons will reunite with writer and exec producers Carina Adly MacKenzie and Julie Plec and star as the male lead in the network's drama pilot. Also joining the cast are Tyler Blackburn (Pretty Little Liars), Lily Cowles (BrainDead), Michael Vlamis (New Girl) and Heather Hemmens (Hellcats).

...

Parsons, who has played Jackson on The CW's Vampire Diaries spinoff The Originals for Plec and MacKenzie, will play Max, described as a natural born leader and dedicated Roswell police officer who for years has concealed his origin and unearthly abilities. The role was originally played by Jason Behr in the 1999 WB Network series from Jason Katims.

Cowles will take on the role of Isobel, the polished and restrained woman who wasn’t meant for small-town life, but she lives it with all the grace and enthusiasm she can muster in order to keep her true origins a secret. Katherine Heigl played the part in the original.

Vlamis is set as the troubled but brilliant Michael, who survived a violent childhood and is now secretly driven to find a way to escape Earth and the humans who have failed him, to return to a mysterious home he’s never known. Brendan Fehr originated the part.

Blackburn is taking on Sgt. Alex Manes, who is returning home from the Middle East after experiencing his fair share of psychological and physical trauma and aims to adhere to his father’s expectations, abandoning his dreams and the possibility of a future with the man he loves. Colin Hanks played Alex Whitman in the original.

Hemmens rounds out the cast as Maria, Liz’s fun, free-spirited former best friend and social media maven who is oblivious to the realities of Roswell. Majandra Delfino originated the role.
I was never a Roswell person, so my reaction to a reboot would ordinarily be "So what?", but with an Originals writer, Plec on board, and Nathan Parsons on screen, I'm in.

I loved the OG show and thi is a departure to say the least so I am very weary but Ill watch.

i watched the original show and i even read the books, but i dont remember whether i read them before the show or after.

i remember the fan movement to save the show, with the hot sauce bottles and that was a lot of fun. this was probably the first time i ever heard of or read fanfics about anything lol. i remember having dialup internet and logging onto the crashdown cafe almost every day.

barely teen CC is so mortified right now. adult CC googled, and this might be the site!

The original Roswell doesn't seem all that long ago.

So the premise is different? They're not teenagers anymore like the original series? But they've grown up now and it's now that Liz discovers Max was an alien all along?

Will they have any cameos from the original Roswell cast? Maybe Shiri Appleby. Or Katherine Heigl  If they get Heigl on the show that could be the death blow to it. :o

I binge watch Roswell (even the horrible third season) every year so I'm not really loving this reboot. I have such a fondness for the original. I just don't see the point in redoing it.

I think the CW are rummaging around for anything that looks like a teen show from the past so they can reboot it. Roswell fits that.

They'll probably end up rebooting Smallville on the CW as well. :o

I guess it won't have that theme by Dido anymore?

i wonder if it'll take anything from the books. i read the series like 20 years ago?

The TV series started nearly 20 years ago in 1999. Still feels like yesterday. Can't believe Buffy is also 20 years old.

Loved the original so it'll be interesting to see what this does with the overall mythology. Though they wont be able to top Dido "Here with me" as a theme song or any type of song that makes you instantly think about the show.

Italia Ricci reminds me of Shiri Appleby. They could've cast her if this were a little later, since Designated Survivor has come to an end.

Yeah... I'm all for nostalgia but it comes across like they just don't have any original ideas. Everything is either a spin off or a reboot.

They better not touch Buffy...

I assume they won't use the Dido theme (so perfect for Roswell) because they've been trying to make it clear that this is going to be a totally clean slate from the original Roswell.

I always wanted a Roswell continuation and to know what happened to them when they went on the run. That would have been great.

More teenage drama by the sounds of it..?

I liked the first few seasons of Roswell, but lost interest later on. It was odd all the alien conflicts they had all tended to happen right in their back yard. Really lost interest when the alien girl showed up and she and Max had a baby...

I think it'll be interesting to see what they come up with.

Loved Heigle and the last time I saw Jason Behr he was in that weird dragon movie.

Didn't one of the actresses end up in Lost?

Most of them haven't done very much of note. I know the sheriff's son was in Revenge.

They've done really well actually.

The actress who played Tess went onto Lost and Once Upon A Time.

Actress who played Liz had a short lived series on CW and now stars in UnReal on Lifetime in its 3rd season.

Katherine Heigl of course had Greys Anatomy and hit movies.

Actor who played Kyle was in Revenge for 4 years.

Colin Hanks went on to do Dexter and Fargo.

What's happened to Majandra Delfino?

And Brendan Fehr didn't do much other than playing a lab technician on CSI: Miami.

What about Jason Behr?

Katherine Heigl is probably the most successful.

Without a doubt she is. She had Greys for a few years and won an Emmy (I believe) not to mention a few hit films and she was easily earning high seven figures.

Behr did The Grudge and that was it.

Behr got blacklisted after trying to be greedy.

Not sure about this. At least they have Liz still as a waitress in a diner. And wasn't there a similar scene in the original series of her getting shot by a bullet and then Max healing her?

Is Maria not working in the diner with her too?

I preferred the look of the actors in the original series to this one.
