The Daily Planet Vol. 2: Superman News and Speculation Thread (🚨TAG SPOILERS🚨)

I don't really like this sort of tribalist thinking. I liked the Snyder cut a lot but I am also excited for an earnest and optimistic take on Superman.
I can respect that, but for the record, there's nothing tribalist about not putting any weight in the opinion of someone whose Superman preference is something I think is the absolute worst take on the character in his entire 87 years of existence. That's just not someone whose opinion on a Superman movie is ever going to be relevant to me.

Most Snyderbros seemed to love Gunn 'til the moment he took over Superman and "fired" a guy he never hired. :funny:

Fair point, I misremembered the timeline, still seems like they were perfectly happy with him being "over there" away from their faves. Regardless of this guy's motivations, it's undeniable he made his "team" known ages ago, and his taste makes his opinion beyond worthless to me.

But hey, if his taste aligns with yours, then yeah, you'll probably hate this movie too. Different strokes. 🤷‍♀️

I definitely feels like James Gunn started getting more hate since he and Peter Safran got the DC Studios gig.

As for the tribalist thinking, I don't get it, either. The sportsbar-ification of movies has seriously hampered my joy in discussing the topic online more thoroughly.

And it doesn't make any sense. You're "team DC, team Marvel, team Snyder, team Gunn, team whatever" -- why?? Isn't the point of being a movie fan hoping that you get as many great movies as possible?? In any genre, from any studio, country, director?

Actively rooting against an upcoming movie: I don't see the point. If something doesn't look good to me, I'm just not interested and spend my time doing something I'll rather do.

Also, anyone here can tell you how much I don't like James Gunn. So if there's a Team Gunn, I sure as hell ain't on it. I just want a good Superman movie that reflects the character/world I've loved my whole life, and despite being a James Gunn movie, this one looks like the closest we've gotten to that yet.

I may be interpreting it wrong, but I don't think that they were pointing at you for being tribalist, but rather Schager's "team Snyder" tweets!?

I also don't think that being a fan of a director (I happen to be a James Gunn fan, just like I am a fan of many other filmmakers) should be synonymous with the "tribal" / sports fan attitude.

It isn't really a competition. I'd wish to be a fan of a lot more directors, where their involvement gets me interested and hopeful for any next movie they make.

Looked like he highlighted what I was saying, but maybe I misunderstood. Either way, I agree the extreme tribalism has been a plague on the DC fandom (or CBM fandom at large) for well over a decade now.

Any fandom at this point. It's even reached the "film bro" pantheon of the self proclaimed "franchise haters."

People seem to attach their personality to a certain area of the film space, and then start fighting about it as if they had any involvement or merit for their successes.

Sometimes I see people seriously afraid to just stick to their taste only to succumb and be part of the "accepted online opinion."

And the discourse is often reduced to either sticking to it or being a contrarian. It's so very two-dimensional, and any nuance has been lost. And everything you say often gets misrepresented and taken by one of the "sides" as an argument for their "battle" (when what you were saying had nothing to do with a simplistic vs argument).

It's very "your taste defines you" / puts you in a box out there. Like, if you say you're a fan of The Dark Knight Trilogy, people automatically assume that you then must not care very much for more fantastical takes on the character. And that couldn't be further from the truth. I freakin' love Tim Burton's movies, and enjoy the Schumacher ones a lot. And I love The Batman too.

Ugh, eff online fandoms. Lol.

I personally think Superman getting Batman numbers is a pipe dream after 2 failed reboots of the character.

Yeah. I believe that if this film is well received enough to get a sequel, that would then have a chance to do bigger numbers.

This movie needs to get over the hill of THREE Superman centric movies (and two reboots) that haven't really connected all that well with general audiences.

And this in a time in which "superhero fatigue" seems is a thing.

I've been disappointed by the last two takes of Superman on screen.
I wasn't really a fan of either director beforehand either.
I am a fan of Gunn tho, so I have more confidence in this film than I did the last two takes on Superman combined.

That said, I will not lie to myself this time if I feel this film is a miss.
I honestly tried to force myself to like both films. And after some time, and looking back, I think I prefer SR over MoS.

It's hard to put into words how I felt after viewing both SR and MoS.
Both films left me feeling disappointed.
SR with the lack of action, the stalking, the super kid, bad chemistry between the leads, etc, and MoS with the brooding, choppy editing, too much of the super fights, and bad chemistry between Superman and lois.

I can't say I will love this film either, but all things so far look promising.
I never got that Superman has a kid moment like with SR, Or JE cast as Lex moment in MoS.
Both instances left me thinking uh oh, not good

I remember just thinking that they could have still righted the ship after both SR and MOS. And they could have.

Still, by 2008/09 I thought that the ship had sailed for a SR sequel and was ready for a reboot.

And after MOS they did not decide to right the ship. They doubled down.

I don't really like to engage in the fan wars that much, but since people want to nitpick everything regarding this film, I just have one question. Why should I take what someone says seriously about this film, especially when it's not out yet, when it's apparent their introduction to film and comic book movies is Man of Steel? Literally the other day I saw someone list it on the 100 greatest films of the 21st century.

I think it's fine that the Daily Beast guy liked the Snyder cut, it doesn't make any review of his any less or more insightful. What I often see when reviews for these movies start to hit is, the very first negative critic gets nailed to the cross... then more negatives come and nobody even remembers the first guy because only then it doesn't become clear their opinion wasn't an attack on your personal hopes. I'd really like it if a majority of people dug this movie, but I hope its fandom manages to avoid that highly punchable "critics are the enemy" mentality. That would be the best possible karma for this new DC universe to start off with.

Yeah. This. Also, an opinion's review might be an indicator for how the film is, but might also not ultimately align with your opinions on the movies.

I've stopped reading reviews before seeing a movie. I read them afterwards, if I'm curious enough.

I usually do the same thing.
And I also always favor reviews from people who gave a film an average rating because that's often where I find most relevant and objective analysis.
People that are too effusive or outright dismissive are, most of the time, too blind beyond their own tastes to give an opinion that truly qualified as a "critic".

I usually don't really pick and choose. I mostly find it interesting to encounter similar or opposing views on a movie after I've formed my own opinion on it.

I've also stopped watching prerelease interviews with cast and crew. I watch them afterwards, and I find them much more interesting to watch once I have a context for what they're saying.

I catch up on trailers and spots I haven't seen, too.

Yeah, sorry. I'm not gonna just stand there and watch when I have the power to save him.

The direction of the scene makes it worse: you don't feel any sense of urgency, and feel like Pa Kent might have made it out of there himself, or that Clark could've grabbed a hot dog AND THEN save him.

Same with the family in peril scene at the end. There is no sense of urgency that sells you the concept that Superman only had one chance , to break Zod's neck.

Two major, major flubs by Snyder.

I went to Shinjuku and Shibuya just to see if there were any ads playing on the screens or if there were any posters displayed on the buildings. Nothing yet. Showtimes aren’t usually displayed until midnight before release in Japan. So much for the long trip. There was a promo happening at a bookstore in Tokyo which I already missed where they had the Superman and Krypto statues. I went to that bookstore to see if those statues were still there, just in case. They weren’t. Prior to that, I missed the Osaka Comic Con booth where the statues were first unveiled, but I don’t live in Osaka. Back to today though, I finally went to the cinema where I plan to see the movie next Friday on the largest IMAX screen in the country, in Ikebukuro, Tokyo. I just had a feeling that the statues may have been moved here, and I was right. I took more than one photo, but I don’t know if you want to see multiple. You may have seen it before in other photos. Anyways I was glad to find this here. Oh but I forgot to post this the other day which I bought from another bookstore:

I just want to be able to say that the last truly good Superman movie wasn't released in 1980.
And yet you are ignoring the people who are saying they liked it because one dude from The Daily Beast didn't like it?

Superman Returns was 20 years ago...I dont think that is a relevant factor anymore. Snyder sure but I dont think Singerman is on anyone's radar anymore.

Shouldn't Fantastic Four have the same issues? F4ntastic was a bigger bomb than the Snyder films. And Marvel hasn't exactly been lighting the world on fire of late.

In a world of social media and cell phones people's long term memory is crashing. They can't remember 2 years ago let alone 20. (we see it every day in political discourse) I just dont think past mistakes matter anymore. People just memory hole things when told to.

All this to say, if the film is good it will do fine. If it is great it will surprise.

And Superman the Movie even longer, but that won't stop people demanding they use the Williams theme. :o
