The Daily Planet Vol. 2: Superman News and Speculation Thread (🚨TAG SPOILERS🚨)

So what, man? We're grasping at straws and yelling at clouds here.

I saw that episode the other day. Gilbert Godfrey is absolutely hilarious as Mixy.

...and the episode's great, by the way. The DCEU team made some really fun incursions into more humorous eps in both Batman and Superman TAS.

I liked the flash ok. I still say they should have taken the loss and recast Ezra. But that's neither here nor there.

The first venom was ok. I've yet to see 2 or 3.

The thing with Superman is, even tho I love Gunn's style, I really hope he hasn't made superman into a wisecracking super dude.
He needs to be taken seriously. Yes, Superman can, and needs, to have some humor about him, but I just hope it's not too extreme.

I expect that from a character like guy, not from Superman.
I'm not the biggest James Gunn fan, but I have to admit that I usually don't have a bad time watching his films (except for GOTG2...). Even if they don't "stick" with me for days afterward, I can't deny his craftmanship and impressive productivity.
And his various statements about what he wants to do with DC Studios were more than fine to me.

Still, I can share this concern about the tone and overall treatment of Superman.

I have absolutely nothing against lightness, and I actually really LOVE this huge gamble of going for a Silver Age Superman.
But Gunn tends to force his humor on things rather than seek humor in what he has in his hands...
Of course, I know he won't make a p*nis jokes here but the more clips I see, the more I have doubt on his approach to certain things. That last one with Mr. Terrific and Lois... Such a random bit, it felt like Family Guy (which I adore, but that's another topic!) :whoops:

I remain fairly confident in my likely appreciation of the film but it's why they choose to promote the film with this kind of thing that questions me.
I too hope the film actually has a good balance between its different tones...
------

In any case, the film has clearly piqued curiosity of general audience and I believe it will open quite big.
However, I can imagine it dividing audiences and generating a messy WOM. And it won't just be the Snyderbots who might reject the movie, that would be too simple. Even though Gunn is used to success, he has a very particular creative voice. So when he takes on what's pretty much a "World Heritage" character, and does it in a rather unexpected direction... Like I said, it's a huge gamble.

We'll see!

I mean, what this particular scene tells me is that, if anything, Superman is quite a serious character in a goofy world.

I feel like this is perfectly acceptable behaviour for the character as I know him.

James Gunn version would say something like " Wow!!! No bueno little Dude, hands off the cape, it's Gucci" Or some other Peter Quillish thing.

And for some reason most people will then swear up and down that that's classic Superman.

Maybe I don't know Superman.

It
It's a movie. You either like it or don't like it (personally).

Anything else is just bandwagon jumping.

I like The Flash. It's got some severe fx problems, it's not "GREAT," but I like it.

I like (only) the first Venom* movie. It's a dumb movie, but I like it.

* I HATE HATE HATE the 2nd Venom movie. I didn't care much about the 3rd one, even though I gotta say I was somewhat (a little tiny little bit) moved by the finale.

Couldn't fare less about whether someone will agree with me on that.

All of this (though I hate both the 2nd and 3rd Venom movies).

People are way, way overall analyzing the Superman reactions. Just go into it with your own expectations.

Superman Returns is my favorite comic book film, even though Superman fans are split on the movie. It did what it needed to and more for me, even with it's flaws and creative mistakes.

That's all you can ask for our of a movie.

Ah yes, making up false lines to justify your narrative. Classic approach.

The concern is premature. The embargo lifts next week, we will have more accurate tracking data closer to release, and everyone will see it in a matter of days. I get we like to doom scroll cause we all want these things to be 98% RT movies with an A+ Cinemascore and it makes 2 billion dollars. But in the end, let's first all watch the movie and see if we enjoy it or not. The other stuff is stuff that's out of your control. No need to overtly stress over it. Once we have some data rolling in, then we can start more accurately seeing what kind of future we are talking about.

Of course it's made up since I haven't seen the movie yet, and I doubt theres a scene of Mxzpytlk grabbing his cape in there.

It's based off of some of the scenes that have been presented to us. A Superman who says things like "What the hay, dude" to his dog and call his droids Superman Robots.

This Superman sounds like Peter Quill and I don't know why people get so defensive about it. I'm just calling out the inconsistencies of people swearing up and down that that is just the way Superman has always talked while claiming to love how much he reminds them of Christopher Reeve's take.

Everyone loved how he code switched during that interview clip with Lois, the one where he goes all stoic and says "Ms. Lane"

I'm saying that these look to be two different characters.

Maybe in this movie there's Clark Kent, then there's the Superman he presents to the world and there's the Superman he is in the Fortress.

I think Batman has a similar thing.

No need to get defensive.

Watching that trailer with the Lois and Clark interview scene is the only thing I have seen where we got a good sense of how Superman talks. I in no way hear Peter Quill coming from Superman. Maybe the "Hey big boy, eyes over here" thing is the closest thing to that I have heard him say, but even there that feels like Superman to me. That Clark interview scene, that feels like Superman to me. So, I can't see what you're seeing.

I’m in the middle on this because I absolutely think Gunn’s character voice for Superman sounds off and excessively doofy/gooberish. Corenswet however has a really cute Brendan Fraser quality that lets him deliver it in a manner that counteracts it a fair bit. So it’s a mixed bag.

“Hey buddy, eyes up here” is 100% a Superman line. In comics or animation, that’s just pure Superman. “What the hey, dude” is more Clark Kent-coded which makes sense as David has spoken at length about how both Superman and Daily Planet Clark are performances put on by the 3rd character who is the real guy who can only be himself in private (ie, with Krypto at the Fortress) or with people who know the truth. Another example is him getting emotional during the interview scene, where David has explicitly said he was being that Third Real Guy character because he had his guard down with his girlfriend and let the Superman mask slip. These are deliberate choices that bring the character from the comics to life beautifully imo.

And all this reads to me. When I think of Superman in my head fighting like a giant monster or something, I 100% see him talking like this. Or even if I look back at Superman: The Movie, he said cheesy lines like that. That's just who Superman is. It's part of the charm.

I’ll put this in Supes’ plus column so far (and without posting spoilers obviously):

Considering what people who have seen it have said, Gunn reined himself in and cut those scenes where his trademark isms and humor is just too much. Whether that was his move or mandated by someone above him, that's a good thing.

Gunn truly has a formidable cast, the question is (or to me at least) is if he can help himself with that damn script. But we'll see in a bit.

There is no one above Gunn. He is head of the DC Studio. It's a separate branch/entity of WBD. He is the final say for any film they put out. If any changes were made it's because Gunn decided so.

True, but I also wouldn't put it past Zaslav to have him bring another exec as powerful as Gunn/Safran to make some notes about the movie.

If only Paul didn't have a Batman bias, I would want his brain somewhere involved in this universe.

My main worry with Gunn is him bringing over that awful ‘’mcu humor’’. We get tense and serious moments, only for them to get cut via lame jokes right after. Balance. But I didn’t care for the Cena show or the animated stuff he has done so far. Eh.
