Merica’ building alligator detention camps and the world bleaker and bleaker, I get the escapism of all of it, especially with a character like Superman, but I have no real energy to see any film right now. It just feels odd all of it right now. I keep waiting for it to get worse, which sucks.

Jokes and bs aside from me, I hope ya’ll truly enjoy your viewings. For some of you is decades in the making.

Yeah, honestly I’m sort of there too. It’s not that I want a cynical Superman movie but the particular flavour of buzzwordy hopepunk poptism they’re going for feels almost crass to me. Totally get why not everyone feels that way, but it feels like totally the wrong moment for it.

Would sacrifice my first born for something closer to Morrison’s Action Comics run.

That guy who did the premature review, if you go on his socials, he has been hating on Gunn and DC and this Superman movie for months. He's a Cavill/Snyder bro. Its not surprising that he's negative on the movie and he was always going to be negative on it. So consider the source.

If DC announces a sequel to it before it's release, then I would be worried. That's one of those moves they do when they are worried about the film.

For myself, I personally think Gunn's films have mostly been ok to enjoyable but I never really have any need to go back and rewatch them. I think if he's able to reign in some of the humour I will probably like this a bit more than his other films.

I do think he nails character work though and David and Rachel appear to have great chemistry here.

Like I said...The Daily Beast is trash no matter what they were writing about. I wouldn't trust them if they loved the film and that is the honest to gods truth. Whats next TYT is going to do a review? What does Politico think about Superman? Does the New Republic think it is too sappy?

Where have you gone Siskel and Ebert our nation turns its lonely (depressed, disgusted and beaten down by fascism) eyes to you!

Bingo!

It depends how the announcement goes. If it is one of those super flashy ones that get the big headlines in and around the premiere date then yeah I will get worried. If it is just someone saying that they are actively in development on something (like what Gunn said a couple weeks ago) then it means very little. Seeing how much money they are throwing at the international markets I think it is obvious they have plans going forward :)

It's definitely nice to have overwhelmingly positive discourse and a shared enjoyment of the thing, like Andor. Like this communal lesson of "This is how well it can be done!"

But I'm getting used to the idea that this film won't be an Andor type situation. Just the teaser for the teaser had people taking hard stances about, sigh, how talented at acting the extras were. That is some ridiculous **** right there. But it says people are eager to have discussions about this movie, about tone, world building, the superhero genre, whatever.

Plus, several of the things released have been divisive. The flying face, the Lois interview, Krypto hitting him, the sun making him yell. They're just a taste of long years of debates ahead, I think.

Critics on a whole seem to have soured on comic book films. Not to mention that with Superman, people come in with such preconceived notions that I can buy Gunn's more Silver Age approach not working for some people.

My honest prediction is it’ll be super divisive and get mixed reviews but that isn’t a bad thing. Just means it’ll have an ultra specific tone/style that might really, really be your thing!

Just a reminder, Aquaman has a 66% rating and had an opening weekend less than $80M. That movie went on to gross over $300M in North America and over $1B worldwide.

As it's been stated ad nauseam, as long as the film hits with the GA, Superman on film will be fine. Critics and online fandom doesn't mean as much as people like to think.

The Transformers franchise proved that for years.

I dont think it will be that divisive at all. Most of the stuff people are "discussing" is normal boilerplate fandom stuff. Heck I heard worse critiques during the Nolan Trilogy. (I remember the original image of the batmobile, The Joker, Batmans voice...etc) Fans nitpick everything until they sit down with their popcorn.

I think a certain segment of fandom will be annoying but critics and normies i think will be way less divisive in part because they like James Gunn. His movies always seem to do well with critics and fans. That is a bad indictment of the current nature of film critique mind you, but it is what it is. He might get dinged for playing it safe but these days critics prefer that which is weird.

Divisive to me says 50/50 or 60/40. I don't think it will be near that to be honest. But I am often baffled by what people like so...

Really?

Fair point, I misremembered the timeline, still seems like they were perfectly happy with him being "over there" away from their faves. Regardless of this guy's motivations, it's undeniable he made his "team" known ages ago, and his taste makes his opinion beyond worthless to me.

But hey, if his taste aligns with yours, then yeah, you'll probably hate this movie too. Different strokes. 🤷‍♀️

Man its gonna suck if this is not well received. Needs to be GOTG1 like in terms of reviews and do hopefully The Batman level in Box office.... Like i feel like it needs to be in contention for best cape film of the year to be successful and for Gunn's era to have a mandate. I was thinking Thunderbolts and F4 may turn out more well liked but hope i am wrong.

DC as a brand just seems so cursed though.

I don't really like this sort of tribalist thinking. I liked the Snyder cut a lot but I am also excited for an earnest and optimistic take on Superman.

I just want to be able to say that the last truly good Superman movie wasn't released in 1980.
