The Daily Planet Vol. 2: Superman News and Speculation Thread (🚨TAG SPOILERS🚨)

He’d be perfect for that. It would be a nice boost for him after The Franchise got canceled.
I never did watch it. I loved Veep, but idk if I wanted to experience the stupid **** of the DCEU and the MCU again even for laughs.

For those of you that have watched both Man of Steel and Superman, which film would you say has the better fight/action sequences?

hmm.....its a bit hard.

I think Supermans scenes are a lot more varied in their fight scenes. While I think MoS is a bit tighter in their action sequences. But they're so hard to compare because there are so many enemies in Superman while MoS just has the Zod crew.

I've seen the film four times now. Hope it does do well at the box office in the next coming weeks despite being in competition with Fantastic Four.

My overall like for the film aside, I wanted to point one thing out that I was disappointed in the aspect ratio in IMAX. Are the red cameras considered IMAX cameras? When I watched the trailers for the movie, some of which took up the full screen, there was a huge contrast, and it actually felt like an authentic IMAX experience, whereas Superman had widescreen even in the IMAX release. On that note, I felt cheated.

Going into what will hopefully be a Superman standalone sequel, I hope we get more epic moments outweighing the comedy in the film. I'm all for humor, but overall want the film to be grounded on some level. Tonally it was very family-friendly and fun. I just felt like it lacked some epic moments. I'd argue again that the Donner films were tonally a little more serious and had epic moments.

Gunn's Superman on the other hand has some epic moments, but to a minimum. Superman holding the collapsing building in place over the bridge, and that shot of him hovering over the dust as the woman from her car looks back. Superman's battle with Ultraman (Face it though, a story with the real Ultraman would be epic) after that super punch, and the hero stance pose with the Superman theme by Williams...then that moment where Superman punches a Planet Watch guy's teeth out, followed by super spinning the rest of Luthor's army out in the air, then blasting them with heat vision. Visually nice.

These were epic moments, albeit, very brief. Aquaman was a movie that had many jokes but had some epic action sequences too. Some of the best of all DC films. The most epic fight was the final one with Arthur and Ocean Master over the surface. The slow motion and choreography was incredible. But going into a Superman sequel, I'd want it to be more serious than 2018's Aquaman.

I don't mind Superman being occasionally emotional. I still thought that "I'm human, I get scared" soliloquy was a little corny and over-the-top. Or the way he reacted to Lois' comment on #super$#%& was kind of forced comedy just for the sake of comedy.

In the next film, I hope we see a Superman that matures and acts more confident and commanding for the majority of his screen time, while still maintaining a sense of humor. No brooding.

I don't know what to expect or if we'll even get a direct sequel, so I feel like I can't speculate. It will be Gunn's vision. Every fan likes to use their imagination, but it's not like we'll get to decide.

I would like to see a plot where Jimmy Olsen finds out Clark Kent is Superman and he becomes a new member of the Clark Kent secret keeping club. I hope to see a little more Perry, and hope Lois and Jimmy get a little more involved in the main plot. This time, maybe we could see Lois get rescued by Superman. Jimmy too. Maybe a romantic flying dating scene with Superman and Lois. I would have liked seeing a ceremony held by Luthorcorp or an expo event run by Lex with Clark, Lois and Jimmy there to cover the event. I would have liked to have seen all of this in the first movie.

So those are some of my thoughts. Thanks for reading even if you didn't read all of it. My long post.

Superman, easily because in the fight sequences, Supes is trying to minimize damage and avoid loss of life. In MoS, it’s like he’d oblivious to how dangerous his abilities are. Hell, the first time he fights Zod, he drives him away from an empty cornfield and into a fairly populated town and blows up a 7-11 full of people.

Well yeah, one is 3 years in and the other is new.

Except right after that scene, he gives a big rant to Zod about how his parents taught him to control his powers. So while maybe he hadn’t been in a real fight before, he should have at least had enough common sense to know that what he was doing was making the situation worse.

Controlling your powers vs being in a real fight with other super powered people who dont care....not exactly the same thing.

While I appreciate the intensity and scope that Zack was going for in Man of Steel, I much prefer how James Gunn approached the fight sequences in this film.

I could never get over how bad the CGI background of the city looked (e.g., color, lighting) during Superman's battle with Zod in Metropolis. Even though the battle in Smallville was filmed on location, the grainy color filters and lighting gave an artificial look to everything imho.

I also appreciated how David's Superman focused more in keeping civilians safe as opposed to beating down his opponents.

Superman.

The fight scenes are spectacular and brilliantly staged. The camera work is visceral and they're beautifully intertwined with other scenes that keep up the momentum and feel like they're part of the action. They actually have beats where the action evolves and mounts towards resolution, and they're insanely fun. Also, I like how heavily James Gunn relies on live action inserts mixed with the CGI.

I LIVE for this stuff:

While there are definitely some good fight scenes in Man of Steel, they also tend to be repetitive and by the end outstay their welcome. They're mostly geared towards brawling and destruction with little narrative tissue. The Smallville fight's a highlight.

There's not much in it for me, they're both mostly CGI fights which always look weird from time to time but both do have their cool moments & sequences.

I'd probably marginally say Superman though simply because the camera shake was significantly less prominent during the fight scenes in it which as a result I think makes it easier to follow what's happening.

But he didn’t care either.

Yeeeep. Crashing through the service station and bringing the fight TO Smallville, as well as that moment in the finale where he dodges the tanker and lets it explode behind him... both would have almost gone over okay if they'd allowed Clark to take a second to react to it all.

Have him on the ground in Smallville-- tired from the effort and his burst of impulsive anger worn off-- and look around at the explosion, then at all the people running and screaming and just have him say "oh no..." quietly.

Instead, he glares at Zod.

The tanker? Same thing. Zod kicks it toward him, he quickly looks at the building behind him then TRIES TO STOP IT (ala the bus in SII) but it shoves him back into the building and explodes. He floats/leaps out of the flames, takes in all that's happening around him, Zod ambushes etc.

Instead, he dodges and aura farms.

Small moments, big difference, IMO.
