The Daily Planet Vol. 2: Superman News and Speculation Thread (🚨TAG SPOILERS🚨)

I'm curious, even though the majority of us really enjoyed or loved Superman, does anyone think Superman 2 should have a new director or should it remain Gunn?

We know that James Gunn is making a a semi-superman sequel of some sorts, but in regards to a straight up Superman 2. Are we as fans happy with Gunn staying on board as director?

Absolutely happy. Unless he wants to hand it off to someone else. Gunn made the first Superman movie in my 40+ years that I actually liked. I’m not ready to drop him yet.

I'd be shocked if Gunn handed it over to someone else. I think he'll want see it through. I think whatever he's currently writing right now we'll be the continuation of this story.

I think i might want a new director if Gunn doesnt want to do a solo superman film.

Happy isn't a strong enough word to explain the incredible job that James Gunn has done to bring Superman and his world to life on the big screen.

Alternative A: James Gunn
Alternative B: Gunn, James

If Gunn wants to make another movie by all means. I wouldn't have a problem with that. But personally I think he should step back. He made a great movie and has built a solid and interesting foundation for the DCU. I think it would be cool if he handed the reigns of to a new filmmaker so he could focus on his role as co-head of the studio.

I want him to direct the sequel or the team up film.
I'd be hard pressed to get behind another director.
It would take someone.like a Spielberg, Cameron, favreau, or Jackson to get me on board.
I 100% would NOT support an unknown up and coming director.

Tomorrow is Gunn's Comic Con panel. :fingerscrossed:
Oh really! How exciting. I have a feeling he’s going to have a great comic con.

Probably won’t announce anything in case the promo for fantastic four overwhelms it but still, it’s nice to see him

After seeing F4 yesterday, I am so happy that we finally have 2 great CBM's from both Marvel & DC and both also releasing within the same month.

But I really hope they improve the visuals for Superman in the sequel. Watching F4 reminded of my only critique on Superman - the weird lightning, camera angles and overal aesthetic. It often looked like a high budget TV show.

F4 looked like a proper film. It had that cinematic flair to it. Not that Supes didn't look good, but as I said there is definitely room for improvement for the sequel. It's my only nitpick for an otherwise excellent CBM.

I’m happy either way, but if I were to choose, I personally would prefer him to hand it off to someone (and let me choose the someone of course). :hehe:

Gotta say, I don't agree with that at all.

Superman was pure cinematic bliss for me.

On the other side, I really felt the limitations as a filmmaker and TV roots of Matt Shakman on F4.

My only concern about Gunn directing Superman 2 (or whatever the sequel is) is that he could ultimately end up stretching himself too thin as he tries to make another movie, writing more shows like Peacemaker, Waller, etc. AND co-run an entire studio. Granted, he seems like a workaholic and he’s balanced out his responsibilities exceptionally well so far. But I think he felt he HAD to take on Superman and launch it himself to give his studio a big win right out of the gate. Given how much was riding on him personally in that moment, I don’t think he could have trusted someone else to do it.

Maybe now that the universe has had its first success, he can take more of a backseat and allow someone else to direct this sequel. That said, I’m still not sure that he should because Superman very much felt like his movie and I worry that a new director could be jarring. I want to see this story continue in the way it’s been started. Additionally, dropping Gunn after one Superman film almost feels like an NFL team dealing their star QB after winning a Super Bowl.

Well Peacemaker is in the can and likely a 3rd season would wait a bit again. I dont think he's writing Waller? But it doesnt seem like something they're rushing to so I think he'd be fine. He did Superman while launching the DCU. Now that they're getting into a flow.....it might lighten his load a little. Esp with them focusing on 2 films a year.

I'm suprised they haven't increased marketing now that Fantastic Four has been released. I would have expected some announcement or new talk show appearances.

MOS Superman would have saved people during the Metropolis fight. The film showed that it was in MOS Superman's nature to save/help people, even if that Superman was more of the lone wanderer type of character.

However, the problem lies in the creative team (Snyder and writers). For whatever reason, they chose not to include a scene or two during the Metropolis fight to show Superman saving civilians or being actively concerned for their safety.

Instead they got caught up in the visuals and "action porn." And the fight was exciting to watch. Yet including a few extra scenes to show that Superman trying to protect civilians from all the chaos would have gone a long way towards blunting that particular criticism of the film.
This reminds me of a video essay that Lindsay Ellis did some years back about Independence Day vs. War of the Worlds, where she compared how much thought and sensitivity filmmakers put into portraying citywide destruction on screen pre-9/11 versus post–9/11. In the former, it’s portrayed very bombastically and fantastically without a lot of consideration for the implications and intricacies of the damage and the lives of the people that were taken. In the latter, after the World Trade Center was hit on September 11, 2001, people looked at that this sort of thing very differently, so it’s presented much more harrowingly and realistically to how we would actually react to large scale destruction and disaster.

In Man of Steel, Zack Snyder wants to do both the awesome spectacle and the terrible horror, and it ends up just clashing and feeling very jarring. It wants to have Perry White and company rescuing Jenny Slate’s character from being trapped under a ton of rubble to evoke 9/11, and it also wants Superman punching and beating the crap out of Zod and going through buildings like a cool action/disaster movie. At best, Snyder just doesn’t understand what he’s doing and doesn’t know what he wants. At worst, it’s completely tone deaf , tasteless and psychopathic.

Like pretty much all of his films, despite his intentions and what themes and messages he wants to convey, there’s the young, edgy teenage boy in him that wants to see muscles, violence, blood, sex, cool people beating each other up and explosions that undermines all his efforts. Every time, he can’t shut that part off and he always manages to get in his own way. When it comes to making movies, Zack Snyder is his own worst enemy.

For the longest time, I had a hard time pinpointing why that entire final act in MoS bothered me so much, and that video pretty much helped crystallize and sum it up for me.

I’m happy either way, but if I were to choose, I personally would prefer him to hand it off to someone (and let me choose the someone of course). :hehe:
Give it to the Daniels, directors of EEAAO. Similar yet different weird sensibilities, can do action, handle a large ensemble of characters, can do both the epic and the intimate, can do spectacle, can handle complicated family dynamics between parents and children, they can handle the high minded philosophical and sci-fi stuff and they can do heart. And, if needed, Skeketon Crew showed that they are very good with and know how to appeal to kids.

Saw it again tonight and theater was mostly full. For the first time in 8 years, I’m hopeful about DC’s future. This movie got me to care about superheroes again. And as a Green Lantern fan, I’m also happy to see some dignity restored to that character.
