The Daily Planet Vol. 2: Superman News and Speculation Thread (🚨TAG SPOILERS🚨)

My only compliant is, they don't seem to be giving us the lesser known character films most of us want to see.

Films like the question, booster gold, deadman, captain atom, etc.
I don't really care about Sargent rock or clayface.
And I'd love to see a Lex origin film pre Superman. It Could be done relatively cheap.

No offense, but picking the wrong obscure characters to adapt is a strange thing to get upset over, IMO. For example, I don’t care about Clayface or Sgt. Rock AT ALL, and so if they get movies before Wonder Woman or Batman, then that rubs me the wrong way. But if they get movies before Phantom Stranger and Captain Atom? I mean, why not? I may like the latter two better, but if Gunn is going to adapt some of DC’s lesser known heroes and villains, I think the most we can hope for is that he eventually gets around to the ones we care the most about (which will obviously vary from person to person quite a bit). To be clear, when the Clayface and Sgt. Rock movies started making headlines, I didn’t really understand why Gunn would prioritize either of those. But I also don’t know why he would prioritize movies for the Question or Deadman either. It’s not like those characters are a guaranteed slam dunk in terms of box office success or even being good movies. I’m sure there are some fans out there who have been clamoring to see those characters adapted, but not so many that Gunn should feel a need to scrap his more immediate plans so he can get to them first. Superman, Batman and now Wonder Woman being prioritized makes sense. But I feel like the more obscure characters can be rolled out whenever he feels ready to do so.

I do think expecting it to make a billion dollars would be a bit much but I'd be quite happy with something in the high 600-low 700 range personally
If it makes 150+ million opening weekend domestically plus another 150+ overseas, it would need to make $700 world wide from July 14 until the middle of September. It would be disappointing if they can’t make that much with limited competition. The opening weekend is the key. Unless it has a BVS type fall.

It's more complicated than that, imo. The more it makes domestically, the more profitable it is for weird logistical reasons. It's why The Batman was such a high profit with 770 million for the final box office. A lot of that was domestic gross. If Superman follows a similar trend (which wouldn't surprise me heavily), it'll be fine

Too much stiff competition in July for a billion dollars, methinks. But I am also pathologically wrong.

Batman came out in March.so it’s weekday holds where limited because kids where in school. Superman is coming out in the middle of Summer when kids are out of school and parents are on vacation. Superman will dominate the big IMax and Dolby screens from July 8th until Fantastic 4. That is when it’s going make it’s money. 17 days I would estimate.

No Regals or Cinemarks near me so I either settle for the AMC stuff or just dont get a Krypto tin :(

I just can’t get over that after almost 50 years it appears that DC has finally gotten Lex Luther right on the big screen. Lex is the ultimate Superman hater. The Snyder bros should love Mr. Holt’s performance. :woozy:

I WANT that Fortress of Solitude cup!

I'm kinda shocked that no theatre did the a Fortress of Solitude or Daily Planet globe popcorn bucket. I would've figured those would be the two obvious choices.

If a there can be a superhero with two different variants on the big screen at the same time it’s Batman. I think that is what WB wants. They want the Reeves trilogy and they want a DCU Batman. The only real similarities is there name. I am 100% behind two Batmen. A real world Bats for Reeves and a fantastical Bats for Gunn. Both can be successful.
I hope the Gunn Batman is somewhere in between Reeves and snyders.

This Lex does seem very similar to the one from the very first animated DC direct to video movie, Superman/Doomsday, voiced by James Marsters. Similar voice and similar cold and calculated, dry tone (as opposed to Clancy Brown's OHMSS Blofeld inspired booming voice), and Hoult looks as young as that Lex looked.

It was funny because the X user admitted that he got his early screenings tickets. I guess he will hate watch it. What is going on in this world????
Superman is giving me Barbie vibes. You can see the success but a small minority will have issues with it.
It would be funny to watch his reaction and the inner turmoil.

( Talks to self )
Don't you dare clap.
Nope, not getting goosebumps, it's just cold in here.
Taps finger to the music.
Stoo. I hate this theme.
I hate....(taps).....it.
must resist.

Oh I'm not upset. At all. It's just the only thing I can think of if I had to find something to complain about. I'm good.

I think we will get a live action Kevin Conroy. Bats will the be a serious alpha male, especially with how light hearted Supes appears to be. I expect him to have plenty of tools and to be something we have never seen. Batman will be the Yin to Superman’s Yang. Batman will be very suspicious of Supes at the beginning. Supes will feel the same.

S#%#, that last trailer got me pumped! And the TV spots thus far. Gunn was saying how spoilers won't ruin the movie? Wait, what?? I want to be just as surprised when watching the movie for the first time. I'm beginning to get really excited for this movie.

I am trying not to rewatch that trailer. What is the space pod thing Lois is driving? Luthorcorp creation or Maxwell Lord's? Either way, I love it.

What is Metamorpho doing to Superman? At first I thought that was Brainiac. Superman is holding 'baby Joey' in his hand...what's going on?

Lex Luthor looks like he's going to be the perfect antagonist. I always wanted to see a shot of Superman punching a villain in the face, but that guy in the Luthrocorp tech suit...looks like the perfect General Zod, who looks like he has a goatee. We've had Zod before, but in a few years time, if earned, I'd be open to seeing Zod as a villain. I wasn't that crazy about Michael Shannon's Zod.

I don't mind the wide lens shots of Superman flying, albeit not a fan. As long as there's some more formal approaches to the flying scenes, not like Snyder either, where he used a hand-hold/shaky narrative approach. I prefer a simple formal approach with a camera following Superman's navigation...like any of the Reeve movies we watched.

Remember if it fails, Superman is officially in the "a product of it's time" category. Modern audiences can't relate to the character, etc.

Only if it fails despite positive reviews.

If it's just another SR or MoS situation, then it says more about the film than it does the character's appeal.

i'm assuming superman is pulling his punches when he punches out and heat visions lex's soldiers, so he doesn't end up eviscerating them.

or lex's forces have taken some kind of super-human booster and can now take the hits from superman.

Yeah they are gonna have to explain that. Superman punching a soldier seems out of his character. Even if that is the soldier that beat the hell out of him in the Luther cell.

Apparently, before they take on Superman, they need to check their DENTAL PLAN!

In regard to Lex's soldiers, I'm pretty certain that they'll either have to be enhanced or Superman has been incredibly weakened from his ordeal. There's no way that Lex's soldiers would be able to survive a punch from Superman under any other circumstances. Also, I'm assuming that these are the same group that's probably responsible for capturing/torturing the people in Lex's prison.

Really great trailer.

Lois Scooby-Dooing herself into mischief will never not be funny. She a bald pilot now, hope we get some line to make some sense. Some iffy cgi aside, this tone will likely win over lots of ppl.

I also have no doubt about A WF film being his next film. Tis’ just too damn tempting not to do so.
