The Daily Planet Vol. 2: Superman News and Speculation Thread (🚨TAG SPOILERS🚨)

If 'Superman' ends being both a critical and financial success, I would personally want the next installment to be a direct sequel that involves both Superman and Supergirl going up against Brainiac.

Plus, I'm a little reluctant to see Superman share the screen with Batman again since history has shown that filmmakers will always favor Batman over him (e.g., BvS, JL, DCAU, Injustice).
In the DCAU, I think they did Superman better in the JL-JLU animated series than STAS. Don't forget that Superman pummeled Darkseid in the finale and it was epic, and one of Superman's greatest moments.

if there's a WF movie, it would great if the dynamic between superman and batman will be vastly different than it was from BvS.

just to differentiate it from the previous incarnation.

as in maybe there might be some initial distrust between the two, but superman will be able to tell right away that batman is somebody who has suffered a tragedy and is out there trying to do some good.

because this superman has a high EQ and empathy will be one of his super powers, in a way.

they'll team up fairly early to go up against a common threat.
there won't be superman out here threatening batman with "the bat is dead, bury it. consider this mercy!" and batman won't spend the first half of the movie plotting to impale him with a kryptonite spear!
On the subject of Batman and Superman's dynamic (in the comics), James recently said that he loved how they were different in some respects but similar in others. So, I wouldn't be too concerned about getting anything even remotely close to what we saw in BvS.

There's actually a really cool panel from Tom King's Batman run that perfectly encapsulates what I'd expect to see from their relationship in the DCU.

I LOVE THAT WHOLE TWO-PARTER SO MUCH!!!! :hrt:

I really don't understand what Gunn and the DP were thinking when doing some of these shots.

This fish eye effect didn't look good in Black Adam, it didn't look good in GOTG3 (Adam Warlock).

It's a shame, because the film has some other fantastic visuals, then this pops up like a sore thumb.

Lol put this in your trailer for a Superman follow up and you wouldn't need to do anything else.

Honestly, I feel like the weeks leading into the film's release are going to be a little nerve racking for me. This film needs to deliver both critically and financially in order for the DCU and Superman to have a long and prosperous future on film.

I still recall how disappointed I was in seeing all of the mixed/negative reviews for MOS when they first came in. After a year's worth of generating a lot of hype, I felt like my excitement was impacted by the film's mixed reception. I do not want to go through that ever again.

Man of Steel had great trailers but WB did not market the movie like they are marketing Superman. Marketing does lots of good things concerning the general audience. It’s already paid dividends with the early screenings.

All we can do is wait until actual fan and public reactions come in the week of.
Ignore the reactions a week or two beforehand, ie, it's a horrible film, or, it's the best superhero film ever type of reactions.
I trust the people's reactions on here more than ANY critics.

What day are you seeing the movie?

Agreed, although, I do think this film needs to get a good critical and audience reception to be successful.

Which, in terms of critics, we will know if they lift the embargo early that it will get decent reviews.

Critics generally seem to like Gunn’s stuff (even his more vulgar material like Peacemaker) so I’m hopeful that it will do well with them. My only worry there is that they won’t vibe with the more outlandish aspects (pocket dimensions, characters like Metamorpho that might be a bit difficult to explain, etc.). But The Suicide Squad had a lot of that goofy comic booky stuff and critics loved it so it’s probably fine.

I understand why people may be turned off by these extreme shots, but it actually makes sense why they do this for 2 specific reasons. The first being that comics artists exaggerate perspectives and use foreshortening all the time.

The second reason being that distorting the perspective on film gives the shot an added sense of intensity and chaos. Note how the shots with exaggerated perspective are always of someone going at extreme speeds. It's definitely a stylistic choice, but I actually dig it. In fact, MCU could learn a lil' something from this style especially when showcasing Mr. Fantastic's powers.

Marketing is not why MOS got mixed reviews and a divided audience. MOS was marketed everywhere and WB made side deals with everyone from Gillette to Walmart. Mythbusters even did a thing about how Superman shaves...there were reports that the advertising and promotional deals basically paid the budget before the release of the film. (probably exaggerated a bit)

MOS got mixed reviews because Snyder sucks at telling stories. His visuals were awesome but he cut out all the meat of the story. 10 minutes of actual character work added would have made all the difference in the world.

(and MOS is a personal fave...but I also can fill in the holes even though I shouldnt have to)

Gunn is not my personal flavor of film maker, but he can at least tell a basic story which is why even the corny stuff he does tends to work.

They're taking chances, trying out new stuff and also going in for a comic booky vibe. Also reminds me of GoPro (extreme) sports footage.

It's modern, it's bold, it's comic booky/wild/cartoony. I like it. I applaud them for the craziness.
As I said before, visuals very rarely ever bug me I dont have a real artistic eye. Some of the stuff in the trailer seemed a bit weird, but nothing that took me out of anything. I mean how would someone's face look if they were flying? I have no clue!

If I complain about visuals, it usually means whatever is happening in the scene is not engaging enough so I notice. I think a lot of people are like me.

Exactly. I love the weird stuff and trying something cool for the meeting of the comic book vs movie transition.

Edgar Wright did weird stuff for Scott Pilgrim. Sam Raimi tries weird stuff all the time.

Like I said , I applaud the guts to go all out and be creative. These perspective flying shots seem like they've been taken to the extreme judging by the screenshots. I also bet that they have a whole nother energy in motion and can't wait to see what Gunn and his team cooked up.

Unless he completely lost the thread I think his floor is 75% on RT. (not that I care) Critics seem to love most everything the guy does and they seem to like him personally. The fact that he co-runs the studio will help as well since modern critics care more about sucking up for access than actual film critique.

To me it looks like the shots of the cockpit from Top Gun: Maverick...which at first kind of looked off but when I saw it in the theater looked friggin sick!
