We are finally here. I am getting so nervous and excited too, as the day gets closer. I’m not particularly a fan of the aesthetic or the visuals Gunn usually goes for (work with better cinematographers, please), but man, do I want this to be amazing and to succeed. I did like the stuff he did with Guardians 3; pretty mature filmmaking thematically. My hope is that he has continued that with Superman and gotten even better.
Superman has come to mean so much to me over the years. I wasn’t always a huge fan, but after reading some of his most beloved comic runs, I began to really understand and love him. Tyler Hoechlin’s version is pretty close to what first interested me in the character years ago, and for me, it’s the gold standard when it comes to live-action adaptations. His Superman is so full of hope, compassion, and kindness. He is someone who inspires you to be better, and to hold onto hope even when things feel broken. That’s what makes Superman, Superman to me. And that’s what I want from the character. The action set pieces are so secondary.
David Corenswet is an incredible casting for Superman. The more I hear him talk, the more I fall in love with him. There are so many more stories I want to see him in. Like Tyler, he just has that genuine warmth that makes you believe he was made for the part.
Which is also why I’m so nervous about this movie. Because everything is lining up perfectly for this. From what Gunn has said, he really seems to understand what Superman is supposed to be about, and then he has a terrific cast with him. It would be such a shame if the film doesn’t live up to the mark and capture that same spirit of the character that we’ve all come to love.
