The Daily Planet Vol. 2: Superman News and Speculation Thread (🚨TAG SPOILERS🚨)

I'm glad Brandon Routh had some great things to say about the new film, and it's great that he spoke positively about David's performance.

Routh, and Cavill ,to an extent, had to lived in the shadow of Christopher Reeve's revered and iconic performance .

And that's separate and apart from the problematic films they starred in .

And to be fair, it wasn't easy for Chris Reeve to follow George Reeves's Superman , and up until 1978, he was Baby Boomers image of what Superman was.

They had an emotional attachment to George Reeves, in the same way my generation has an emotional attachment to Chris Reeve's Superman.

Thankfully , David was blessed with a strong story, creative team , and a filmmaker with a vision that couldn't be micro-managed ,and mangled by studio execs.

We also have to remember Superman was pretty much a rush job as well and burdened not only by the DCEU, but the having to introduce a new universe. I can only imagine what a proper Superman origin movie done with the same people would have been like.

I hope to catch Superman in theaters at least 1 more time before it's run ends. But it won't be this week :o
I have yet to see the movie a first time...
Went to the theaters this week-end, but it was to catch the last showing for 28 Years Later.
Enjoying empty rooms, I think I'll be seeing Superman very soon now.

I wonder how this Superman carries his suit around? It doesn't really fit under Clark's clothes so we probably won't be getting the classic shirt opening moment in any of the movies. Its still my favorite live-action Superman suit.

Speaking of his costume, I saw an interview where David mentioned that he had lost some weight after getting fitted for the costume and before filming began. That would explain why his costume didn't really fit his physique at times.

I'm still hoping that Gunn will modify the costume for Superman's next outing so that it doesn't look so baggy on David at times.

Sadly I think this will be the costume for this iteration bar some minor changes probably similar to that which Cavill's suit went through, all of which was relatively small tweaks over time & film.

I was thinking about the logo though, given the 'evil' Jor-El/Lara aspect of the film, the character could potentially no longer wish to display his Kryptonian family crest due to what it represents in this iteration. Perhaps enlisting someone good with a sewing needle to 'humanise' the design? If only he knew such a person.. :sly:

I doubt that would happen & is probably wishful thinking on my end because I don't really like the Kingdom Come logo but it could actually be something explained story wise for the alteration to something more classic if they wanted to.

A lot of folks have mentioned feeling like this film was both Superman: The Animated Series and JLU brought to life. Personally, I found more similarities between this film and My Adventures with Superman. And I say that as a good thing.

AngryJoe trying to convey that this was bad thing in his reaction video. :lmao:

Very cool of Brandon Routh to support the new Supes. I'm also glad he got to reprise the role of Superman in the Crisis crossover, and got a way better looking suit as well!

It's also cool to think how many kiddos will now have an attachment like many of us do to certain Supermen. They really got one of the best ones too!

I enjoyed the Man of Steel comics that I read tbh! DC recollected them in hardcover recently. I only bought Vol. 1 but I did remember liking it.

One thing I think DC/Marvel needs to get on top of, is putting graphic novels in the merch side of theaters. Specifically with DC, putting the compact graphic novels that are only $10.

I never had a problem with Routh himself in the role. I felt the script failed him far more than the other way around.

I could never understand why both Singer and Snyder gave their Supermen such limited dialogue either. Were they not confident in their respective actors or did they just prefer not have their Supermen speak a lot?

I think it was all of the above. Routh had very limited acting experience and Singer thought he could get by on charm or whatever (and yet also didn’t even allow him to display any of that either) and gave him no real direction other than “try and look like Christopher Reeve.” And Singer and his team of writers had little interest in exploring anything about the character. Superman barely seems to care about anything other than his maybe girlfriend moving on after he ghosts her for 5 years.

And Snyder and Goyer just seemed to think that making Superman a lonely drifter who views his powers as a burden would be enough to make him an engaging. They probably felt they were fine because the one thing Cavill does really well is brood. But once he starts really interacting with the rest of the cast, the lack of chemistry he has becomes apparent. They copied the Batman Begins format, but the thing is, Christian Bale is engaging whether he’s onscreen by himself or surrounded by other people because he’s the whole package. Cavill isn’t that kind of actor and Snyder isn’t a good enough director to bring that kind of performance out of him.

Look I like both guys...but neither of them are particularly good with dialogue. Routh worked better on TV but that is a completely different style (when discussing stuff like the CWverse) and Cavill could barely act in his one note role in Mission Impossible.

This is all 100% on point...but I would add Snyder could have finessed Cavill a bit more if he would have added a bit more story to the film. The film jumps around so much you never really get to know him. There are plenty of mediocre actors out there that a decent director makes look better and good editing can make there appear to be chemistry...Snyder did none of that so Cavill's weaknesses were on full display which was unfortunate because there was something there.

Its almost like Snyder wanted Superman to be The Man With No Name from the Spaghetti Westerns...which is just a terrible idea in principle but also only works if you have a guy like Clint Eastwood who can do more with 50 lines than many can do with Shakespeare and you have someone like Ennio Morricone making legendary soundtracks. Superman is not a loner killer who by happenstance has to save a town from thugs...travelling around with no backstory and not caring what happens.

Look I am no Gunn fan even now, but he showed us more about who Superman was in the first ten minutes of Superman than Snyder did in 3 films. The reason why no one really seems to be upset about the film being "overstuffed", like they usually are, is because all of it was in service of showing us the type of Man Superman is. The Justice Gang aren't there to sell toys or set up the sequel, they show how trusting Superman is, how different his style is and how much they and the world (even Guy) is in awe of him even if they don't always agree with him. By the end of the film most audience members could write a 10 page background piece about this Superman...we know him and we love him.

Yeah that’s an interesting way to put it and pretty much accurate. He was trying to do a Man with No Name thing with Clark… who is just like the WRONG guy for something like that. Bruce Wayne? Absolutely. Wolverine? Definitely. But Clark is the opposite of all that. He’s not aloof or a brooder. He’s compassionate and caring. Lonely sometimes? Sure but not tormented.

I know this isn't Superman related, but it is DCU related.

Interesting, even if it means nothing, but actor Billy Magnussen liked two of my comments on Twitter/X regarding him being Booster Gold.

These likes were in response the the Deadline article stating Kumail is not going to be Booster Gold.

It makes me curious if he is up for the role, or at least auditioning for it.

Routh acquitted himself well on Crisis, but he is definitely not movie star level talent or charisma. He could get away with his limited chops on the CW, but I don't think that would have ever flew on the big screen.

Gadot (who is far worse) only worked in Wonder Woman due to some crazy synergy with Jenkins and having the magnetism and star power of Chris Pine to bounce off.

He’d be perfect for that. It would be a nice boost for him after The Franchise got canceled.
