The Daily Planet Vol. 2: Superman News and Speculation Thread (🚨TAG SPOILERS🚨)

A friend of mine who enjoyed both Snyder's and Gunn's takes on Superman recently asked me on which film did a better job of showcasing Superman inspiring hope in others.

In the DCEU (MOS, BVS, ZSJL), Superman's death is used to inspire Batman and Wonder into forming the Justice League. Or that's at least what I'm assuming that Snyder was trying to go for.

In this film, Superman's actions eventually lead to the
Justice Gang taking action and stopping the Boravian government from committing genocide against another country.

I think Monday after opening weekend might be the best time to go to movie theaters. I am at an AMC about to watch Fantastic 4 and I am all by myself in a IMAX theater. I saw Superman each week since it has been out and each theater was more than halfway filled. I purposely go when the crowd is the smallest for a more enjoyable experience.

That's pretty much become my M.O. since Covid tbh.

IMO, Superman 2025 that does it better, and it's not even a close call.

If we're talking about inspiring adaptations of the Death of Superman, I recommend watching the animated 2-part adaptation on HBO Max. Even that film was a sequel to less-than-stellar DC adaptations (Justice League: War, for example) but the creatives course-corrected and delivered a good Superman flick that honored the original story and still kept the continuity of the so-so predecessors.

yea the weakest part of the snyder films, imo, was how superman's arc was developed.

he ended up being more of a macguffin.

you were told how much of an inspiration he is by the other characters - but he got sidelined so much in bvs and especially in JL, it just felt a bit too detached.

but the way it's written by gunn here and how everything is built up - you can feel how superman is inspirational to people and the other superheroes. much more.

One thing I was thinking about when watching the movie that I hadn’t brought up yet…

Going back to Gunn’s comments about viewing Lex as a sorcerer… I really loved that approach and it totally feels that way; so much so that I wonder if he had some D&D influence when crafting his pocket universe/portal stuff. As a big fan of the Forgotten Realms books and as someone who sunk WAY too many hours into Baldur’s Gate 3 last year, a lot of that stuff felt straight out of Faerun in the best way. That scene in the middle when the Boravian dictator opens up the portal in his palace REALLY felt like it could have come from BG3. No idea if Gunn was thinking about this stuff at all but I’m always interested to hear about the outside influences that filmmakers find when crafting this kind of stuff.

I just wanted it noted that the theater next to my hotel in Dublin has two screens for Superman but only one for that other film ;)

(Also have one for Goonies!)

i rewatched the Goonies a few months ago with my son!

maybe it's my nostalgia talking since its probably the firs film i ever saw in theaters, but it's still a great and fun family film!

You gotta love and appreciate Richard Donner's filmography: the man went from The Omen to Superman, The Goonies, Ladyhawke, the Lethal Weapon franchise, even shepherded the first X-Men movie alongside his wife and producer Lauren Shuler Donnner: come on!

I get he's disappointed, but dude you're throwing away money on that merch. Why not re-sell it to people who actually enjoyed the movie.

yea, that's the part that greatly confused me.

he bought a bunch of superman 2025 merch just to do this?

or is he just trolling or parodying the snyder cult?

and u notice he has a bunch of superman stuff in his office there - so dood's some big superman fan.
it's weird man.

Obviously CBS needs to host a Superman screening for the Big Brother house. One of the HG doesnt know who Superman/Clark Kent is.
