Hopefully the cable guy will successfully fix my internet at home today so I can work on the rest of my application and post it. I think you guys will like the idea I have for Aquaman in this RPG; especially if you liked my work in the other one.

DC: New Age Volume 1 Application

Screen Name:
trustyside-kick

Character you would like to play:
Owen Arthur Curry (Dweller of the Depths/Aquaman)

Powers:
Hydrokenesis; undersea adaptation; limited telepathy; super strength; enhanced speed; healing factor; senses and durability.

Origin (If not a new character, a recap of events leading to how your character got to what they are today):
Born a few months prior to Darkseid's grand scale massacre and invasion on Earth, Owen never got to really know his mother. Son of Aquaman and Mera, naturally that makes him royalty of Atlantis. He is loved throughout the kingdom and the sea by all that is good. After all the suffering and sadness that had befallen Aquaman before, it seems the gods have finally blessed him.

His mother died during the Darkseid attack, when she attempted to aid Aquaman during the battle, costing her her life instead of his. Owen doesn't know this, however. Being a baby at the time, his memory is clouded. As he grew up, no one had the spine to tell him the truth about his mother's death; especially not Orin. Forever mourning the death of his love, his life as he claims, Orin would never like to talk about it. Owen would grow to believe, as it is what he was told, that she died of a underwater plague that ravished the city months after he was born. But Owen always felt something was being held back, whenever he saw the way his father cried over her death each passing year of the day it occured.

Being royalty definitely has its perks, but it seems that even a prince has his limitations. To further add to his confusion about his mother's death, coincidentally the day after was the day Orin shut off all relations to the surface world. As his great ancestors did before him, he too built a giant dome to protect Atlantis. Only this time, it was protected by magic. Cloaked by the most powerful sorcerors of Atlantis, it is as if Atlantis was never there to the naked eye. Owen, or any Atlanteans for that matter, are not permitted to leave the perimeters of the outer dome.

It has been 20 years. 20 years since the outer dome was first built. And for 20 years, the Atlanteans have lived in peace and solitude; cut off from the rest of the world. Just like their ancestors in ancient times before the discovery of Atlantis was exposed to the outside world.

Every now and then, over the years as a young boy, Owen would attempt to sneak out of the outer dome, by use of his gifts. Inheriting traits from both parents, Owen proved to be a most impressive young boy. He was able to bend the magical water that not only cloaked the outer dome, but also constructed it. No other being, say for Aquaman and his sorcerors, could triumph such a feat. But here, a young boy, playing in the water, bending the waves at his will, easily escaped.

It was only once, however, that he ever made it far enough to quickly taste the fresh air of the surface world. He was quickly spotted, and pulled back down into the depths by some of Orin's most trusted guardsmen. All previous attempts, as were the attempts that were to follow, Owen was quickly stopped. Owen would constantly argue with his father about why they couldn't go to the surface, and then recall how coincidentally the very dome was created not to shortly after his mother's death. But as always, Orin would eventually shut him out at the mention of Mera. Sometimes they would go days without talking.

When all else failed, he turned to his other special abilities. While it was nothing compared to his father's, who was able to expand upon just sea-life, young Owen made use of his telepathic bond with sea-life. At first he would simply play with them, the best he could while "imprisoned" as he viewed it, while still behind the great dome.

But eventually, the fun and games became much more. He was set on interacting the best he could with the surface world, so would have the sea creatures do most odd and unexpected things. Rumors began to spread across the seas and globe through fisherman and then they spread it into the public. The fisherman would speak about a Dweller in the ocean, while some were thinking it may have been the original Aquaman himself.

When news hit the papers, writers thought otherwise. There were numerous other ways Aquaman could reach them, especially doing so himself. Also, by time that this new started to spur up, it was already 11 years after Darkseid's invasion, and Aquaman hasn't been seen since. So, they went with the original idea about the events being urban myths, all behind one known as The Dweller of the Depths; and the name stuck. While Owen didn't know it, he secretly became famous in the circus that is the media. There was never any footage of proof however.

Vulko and Garth would grow to be important in Owen's life. They wouldn't dare defy Orin's orders, but little by little, by childhood "fairy tales" that were actually tales of their past adventures, did they reveal anything of the past to Owen. For, ever since that fateful day, the Atlantean Chronicles ceased to continue to be written, and were forbidden to fall upon anyone's eyes except for a selected few on the Royal Council.

Vulko passed away by Owen's 16th birthday. Garth continued to be the "uncle" Owen never had, and the two became even more attached. Their bond even exceeded that of Owen and Orin's.

16 years after Mera's death, and Garth still found himself telling tales and stories. Only it was becoming much harder to do this. Owen was much more mature afterall, and wasn't interested in "childhood fairy tales" anymore as he stated.

However, one night, Owen sneaked into the forbidden archives and read a chapter from the Atlantean Chronicles, even though it wasn't allowed. As he read that one chapter, it quickly and easily reminded him of one of the so-called "childhood fairy tale" stories that Garth and Vulko would always tell him. He was 20 years old now, but he would never forget those stories. Enraged and hurt as he realized that the protagonist in those tales was his own father, Owen plans to approach him when he is ready. Owen knows his father won't want to dig back into the past, and Owen wants to know why. He has heard nothing but good stories from Garth and Vulko; it was obviously a time period when his father knew happiness. For his father to act so differently now, he knows something must've caused it. Owen has this "itch" in the back of his mind that this is tied together with his mother's death.

Personality:
Fits the profile of basically any ordinary teenage kid. Somewhat a rebel, but only out of curiosity. With never being allowed to swim up to the surface, he only begins to wonder more and more what could be up there.

He can never truly accept his mother's death. Not death itself; he understands that. What he doesn't understand or believe is how they claim she died; not with the way his father mourns for her. Sure, any King would mourn for their Queen no matter how she died...but it sometimes seems to Owen as if his father blames himself for his mother's death. This adds to his personality, a somewhat lack of trust with his own father, but an increasing friendship with Garth who acts like an uncle to him; telling him tales of their adventures in and out of the sea and telling him more about his mother. When he discovers the truth, something inside of him will change; it will change the way he lives and sees the world.

Three reasons why you have chosen that character:
1) What started out as curiosity, turned into much more. I've grown to being a very huge Aquaman fan.

2) What I love about it, is that I can play off from a similar point I am in the other DC RPG (considering the Darkseid event, with changes and several years later), but play a different scenario than the one I chose months ago.

3) I think this will be another way I could explore the Aquaman mythos more, and enjoy creating and adding more to them as I've done in the other DC RPG.

Write two complete sentences using proper English grammar explaining what you plan to do with the character you've chosen (i.e. What are your goals? Will you be doing anything different with the character than is usually seen?):
As I've stated before, one of my main goals is to try a new direction with the Aquaman mythos. Try to bring back some other elements from perhaps the Golden and Silver Ages that would've been more difficult with the Modern Age mythos I tangle with in the other DC RPG. Also, this is a much younger character than my other RPG. I play a more mature character in the DC RPG, so this would also be a new thing to try.

How many times do you intend on posting a DAY IN the RPG:
Hopefully as much as I have in the other RPG. I've come up with quite a large amount of posts in a such time. I can only hope my enthusiam with the Aquaman mythos continues as I try a new "spin" and direction with this RPG.

Color and font you plan on using for your characters speech:
The color will be green, for Owen will be the only Atlantean with green eyes; his mother had green eyes. The font will be Trebuchet MS.

Do you have an Instant Messenger? Which one, and what is your screen name?
Yes. I have MSN and AIM. Both are slicklatino1222, just for MSN you add "@hotmail.com" to the end of it.

How did you find out about this game, Recruitment thread/word of post/seeing the RPG OOC/IC thread?
Another RPG OOC thread.

Please provide a small sample post with original content in the style that you plan to write your character in (must be at least 3 paragraphs long and contain at least one line of dialogue):

AQUAMAN BANNER

King Orin sits on his throne, with the drapes that often block the balcony view wide open. From the distance, he can see much of his beloved kingdom. It has been 20 years of peace. The very idea that he has been able to keep such a thing as violence, at bay of his outer dome, brings great joy to his heart.

If only the same could be said for his relationship with his son, Owen. The two have had a rocky relationship, ever since he was a young boy at age 9. Constantly breaking the palace rules, and even attempting to leave the perimeters of the magical outer dowm on purpose, Owen has always proven to be a mischievous one.

Garth enters the room, although he does not make his presence known. He slowly, and quietly moves around, as if gliding in the air his footsteps make almost no noise. But Orin knows he is here; he speaks out ot him.

"For you to be acting so quietly, and in such a way, only makes it that much more obvious what troubles you, Garth."

Garth smirks, and turns, facing his King.

"Same old Orin. 20 years shed away, but to you it only feels like about 10. You've still got it, old man."

"Old? Look who's talking. You're not so young yourself, minnow."

The two chuckle a brief moment of only a few seconds. In the past, Garth would have easily reacted negatively at the sound of being called such a childish name; but it holds value. It holds value of another time period; Garth's childhood. The adventures of Aquaman and Aqualad would never leave him, and he thanked the gods for that. Those are the moments most precious to him, even if he fails to reveal it.

The friendly, cooling vibe quickly fades away however as Orin stops chuckling. It takes Garth a little while longer however to catch on to what's going on. Sliding his arm down the soft drapes cloth, Garth looks out to the balcony view and Orin does the same.

"Owen's been brewing up some trouble...again."

"What is it this time? Did he put sand in the guard's boots again while they slept in their barracks?"

Garth smiles again, but brushes it off.

"I remember the first time he did that."

"He was 8. Such a spirited young lad, he was."

"He hasn't changed much, you know."

Orin stands up from his throne, and begins to walk towards his chamber. Just before he opens the door, however, he turns to Garth who continues to admire the grande view from the balcony.

"...I wouldn't know."

With the sound of the door shutting, Garth takes in a deep sigh, and turns around, walking towards the stairs. As he walks down them, a figure bumps into him, almost knocking him down. Garth grabs him by the arm, however, and pulls him to him.

"Owen, what are you doing here? I was talking with your father. I thought I told those 2 guards to--"

"Nevermind that. Can't talk right now, gotta go. Oh, and you really thought those two guards would be able to detain me? If they think I'm going to stop...hold that thought."

A man's yell echoes throughout the palace, followed by a barrage of footsteps. Three more men's voices follow those footsteps.

"You remember that gorgeous girl I was telling you about, the one with the red hair?"

"Yea."

"Well, it turns out she has an older brother. Correction...a very protective
older brother...and he was one of the guards. So, ya know. Move it or lose it, eh bud?"

Garth taps Owen on the shoulder as he smirks, and lets him pass. Owen continues to race up the staircase of the great palace.

"Heh....same old kid."

Can't think of anyone who could play Aquaman better. Approved.

Thanks MB. Also, I guess that means you guys can add Mera to the Death list. Vulko if he seems important enough to add. :oldrazz:

Also, it says "AQUAMAN BANNER" because I was working on one, and forgot I never pasted it in when posting my application. My IC posts will have it though.

DC: New Age Volume 1 Application

Screen Name: Charlie No-One
Character you would like to play:
Oracle A.K.A James Flint

Powers: Reality Manipulation and Flight. He also is a master is many forms of martial arts and has great skill in computers.

Origin (If not a new character, a recap of events leading to how your character got to what they are today):
James was raised by his parents, Thomas and Marie Flint in
Midway City. He lived a rather normal life until he turned 18 where he learned of his powers. His parents made him promise to never use them in fear of getting arrested due to the power ban. Like all teenagers, James didn’t listen. Going by the name Warhead, he fought the forces of evil, using his powers over reality to evade the police.

One day, when James was 25, something went terribly wrong. A nuclear power plant in Africa was attacked by the new Secret Society of Super Villains. If actions weren’t taken soon, the plant would explode. Him and other heroes who were also ignoring the law, tried to save the power plant. They failed. While trying to take down the Shade, James missed the new Human Bomb sneaking into the power plant’s reactor. He detonated himself in the center of it. The explosion wiped out several small cities surrounding the plant as well as contaminating most of Africa’s southern border. Everyone in the area was killed, except for James. He had used his reality warping powers to shield himself from the radiation and initial explosion.

James didn’t go out totally unaffected though. By being the only survivor, he was blamed for the attack. The government said his lack of control over his powers caused the plant to explode. These kinds of accusations even made James believe he truly did cause the event to happen. Deemed too dangerous, he was arrested and set to be executed.

On the day of his execution, another set of heroes, much like himself, seized the prison, in which he and many other metahuman were held, and freed them. James felt like this was his second chance. He screwed up once and wasn’t able to save millions of lives. He decided he needed to set things right. There was only one thing: he still believed he was responsible for the explosion. He would have to help in some other way.

Moving to Gotham, a place James found to be the most crime ridden, he now assists vigilantes who need help through more technological fields. Taking the name Oracle, a hero he admired as a boy, James never uses his superpowers and is a great asset to the likes of Batman, Robin, and any other hero looking for help.

Personality:
James is very sarcastic and moody. He doesn’t like to fool around and gets extremely mad and violent when he fails. Before the accident, he was carefree and fun, often joking in battle. This is completely changed. He still maintains a sense of dry humor and will often playfully insult those who he is working with if time permits it.

Three reasons why you have chosen that character:

1) I think he is an interesting twist on a great character.

2) I got some great twists in store for him.

3) Always wanted to play a cyber geek.

Write two complete sentences using proper English grammar explaining what you plan to do with the character you've chosen (i.e. What are your goals? Will you be doing anything different with the character than is usually seen?): I would like to show how he changed from field hero to behind the scenes hero. I would also like to bring fun stories and carry along fun storylines.

The buzzing keeps ringing in my ears. I can still hear the explosion, even to this very day. All I need to hear is a firecracker or a grenade going off over my commlink and it all comes rushing back to me. The scent, the burning…the death. During times like this, I can’t even talk. I can’t even freakin’ move. It hurts way too much. It is during times like when I want to give up.

“Still there Oracle?” says the Huntress. I forgot all about her. My mind snaps back into the mission. My main operative, Helena Kyle, is in Dr. Light’s old headquarters looking for an energy source. Some underground heroes need it to power a cloaking device.

“Yes, I am. I just had some troubles hacking into the cameras. I shut them down. You only have a 5 minute window so I would hurry. I’d hate to see your guts on the morning news tomorrow. Those defense grids look a little dangerous,”

“Haha. Very funny, *******,”

Humor. Way to go, James. Use jokes when faced with difficult emotions. I slump down in my computer chair. A security bubble fills my screen. The cops are responding to a 911 on 5th and Broadway. That’s where Helena is. Who saw her? The cameras were shut down…it was after curfew…

“Huntress, get out of there now. The Anti-Meta Team is on their way. Someone saw you,” I scream into my microphone. I hear nothing in return. I repeat my message. Still nothing.

“Tracer map,”

The computer responds to my command and opens a map of all active tracer links. I outfit each of my operatives with one before I allow them to go out into the field. I need to know where they are at all times for me to be effective. I don’t her purple dot at all on my map.

“Huntress, listen to me. I need you to tell me where you are. Your tracer link is offline. Do not move out without it. I repeat, do not move on without it,”

The sudden blast of vulnerability swipes over me. My heart starts to pound. My body gives in to my emotions. I start to panic. I think I just lost one of my agents; one of my friends.

Interesting. Approved.

Character you would like to play: Victor Freeze

Mrfreeze.jpg

Powers: He possesses a large intellect, as well as technology that can instantly freeze virtually anything. However the technology is the only thing keeping him alive due to his need to live in a sub-zero environment.

Origin (If not a new character, a recap of events leading to how your character got to what they are today):
His wife was diagnosed with a terminal illness, and he himself, whilst having her frozen whilst trying to save her, suffered an accident which completely changed him, leaving him unable to survive in temperature’s above zero, and making his aging process all but stop. Turning to crime, he used his knowledge of freezing and the cold, to create his freezing weaponry, and a suit to maintain himself. During an encounter with Batman, he accidentally damaged the container his wife was stored in, which let her die. He blamed Batman for this, and wanted the rest of the world to suffer and be cold like he now was inside.

After the events of the Darkseid war, Lex Luthor’s detention of meta-humans was in need of some assistance, as keeping them under lock and key was a difficult task. He came to Victor Fries, who, being the leading scientist in cryogenics at the time, was able to help ‘frezze’ the meta-humans and keep them in effectively suspended animation, so escape is impossible.

This special facility is designed to house the most powerful meta-human’s found breaking the laws. The entire complex is at sub-zero temperatures itself, with each ‘cell’ at much lower temperatures to keep them unable to move, permanently kept unconscious. Due to the low temperatures of the facility, Only Victor is able to survive more than a few minutes, and thus is the only conscious person there. There are obviously masses of guards and sentries outside, guarding the entrance, but the cold inside acts as a further security feature.

The aptly named "cooler", is Freeze’s pride, he has yet to leave the facility since it’s opening, and has become a massive recluse, fascinated by the unanimated heroes and villains from the past, locked up inside as his only companions. Sanity increasingly departing, he often speaks to the prisoners, even though they cannot hear him. At the centre of the complex is his hub, where he studies the prisoners, and composes music to whittle the time away. He still loathes the world and wishes them to feel the empty chilling sensation and suffer like he has, but he is becoming more and more estranged, and detached from the world and normality. His aims are becoming furthermore ambiguous and worrying.

Personality:
The man has suffered a great deal, and feels cold hearted, he find beauty in the refined arts, yet chooses to compose more depressive concerto’s of misery rather than joy. He treats ‘the cooler’ as his own private sanctum, which rarely sees any visitors, and has become indulged in his studies of the meta’s and the way in which the world has formed. Keeping track of the world through television, he used to be in frequent touch with Lex, however, he has now found him self further isolated.

Three reasons why you have chosen that character:

1) A hugely underrated character from DC, who has a great amount of depth already.

2) My take on him, is very different, as time has changed him further, and it helps explain the how’s of the new age of DC.

3) I really wanted to be a part of this, and it took me a while to find a character who I could get into, and this whole set up provides a brilliant jumping point for a narrative, as well as a more tangible threat for those who defy the laws…

I will spend a short amount of time building him up, and he is quite a solitary character, conducting his own research, however when in contact with others, and the ever changing social climate of the world, we shall see more to this hauntingly unique character. His goals are very ambiguous, even to himself, as his isolation hace driven him into great wells of depressive sadness and obscurity.

The great halls of the facility rang through with an ominous overture, the cold air playing host to an even more chilling concerto. The audience, never moving, forever locked in their icy poses, music washing over them as they remain dormant and oblivious.

A deep bellowing chord filling every inch of this twisted prison, icicles humming and resonating with the echoing notes. A wintry and pale man’s hands run themselves over bone like keys, the faint sound of cracking ice overpowered with a haunting melody.

Soon only the distant ripples of the symphony remain, a shadow of what was once a man, now roaming the empty corridors between occupants, stopping at a personal favourite, another who’s colour was long since drained from his face. Once known as The Shade, he was merely just a number now.

"Good evening…"

"Just as talkative as usual I see…"

As with every other time, a steely frozen face remains still, oblivious to the words of it’s keeper.

"Well fine, be like that, I understand you’re oh so busy these days, keeping watch are we? What would I do without you eh?"

I would also like to add that the explosion in Africa is public knowledge and is pretty big news. It happened 5 years ago in RPG time. Warhead is still be looked for and everyone, including heroes, think he is responsible for the explosion. No one knows him, even as Oracle. He keeps his identity private.

Also, what is the setting like? Futuristic? Modern?

I think the architecture and setting and such should be like Children of Men. It is all modern because the explosion and oppression halted new technology and growth in architecture/economics.

Man, Batman's rogues are having a Hell of a time in this future. Riddler's a PI, Freeze is a jailer...

Yeah, it's pretty interesting. One of the key themes I hope to explore is the decline of Batman's rogues, as if their time has come and gone. Most of them moved on once Batman was gone...

I hope Karem doesn't mind, but I (Charlie) edited the app a little. No one needs to reapply, but I added side and secret identity status to the app so it makes things easier.

Quick question to Charlie...how well known is the new Oracle among the hero community?

He is known through out the hero community. Anyone can access him through means that I will set up in my first post. Police and others don't think he is real though and considers the Oracle, who is considered sexless, is a myth. My Oracle uses the voice changing tech the Babs used.

Cool, sounds good. Just wanted to be sure if Barry would know of Oracle or not.

They don't know the secret identity though. Just Oracle.

Hopefully we can get the RPG up today.

Going for irony there? Showing that the best way Batman could use to 'reform' his rogues gallery is by disappearing altogether.

charlie, i was wondering, do you think oracle could approach Lor-Zod about some kind of natural threat, that only a kryptonian's phyisiology could withstand?

Yeah. Sure. Would it be just like "I need you to do this" or would I lead Lor-Zod through the whole thing?
