Arrow The Emily Bett Rickards/ Felicity Smoak Thread

I hope they kill laurel, and replace her with some more interesting/as hot if not hotter. worst character on the show.

Not sure if these have been posted yet:

That doesn't necessary mean that Felicity's character will be ruined. It's not the melodrama that ruined Laurel, and it's not like the absence of it would suddenly make her the most loved character. Her character was ruined the moment they cast Katie Cassidy.

Different actresses will have a different way of interpreting or acting out melodrama. EBR has a different personality and acting style to KC.

nobody complained about Laurel in season 1,people didnt start complaining about Laurel until she turned on the hood in season 2,once again a creative decision, but from my understanding from writers Laurel is good for ratings, because she is an escapist character for girls which is 50% of the audience.

Another example was huntress, nobody complained about huntress until she went on a killing spree,
because she had dinner with Laurel and Ollie and got jealous. Once again this was bad writing, not the actors fault

Oh, I think there were more than enough people that complained about Laurel in Season 1. Season 2 simply took it to a whole new level.

That's not true. A lot of people didn't like her in Season 1, including myself. She was the worst, and Willa Holland was marginally better (but did look a lot better), and it was only until they added Felicity into the cast that there was a girl I actually liked in the show.

Im looking through thethread archives, the kill Laurel threads did not start until
season 2 aired.

But equally, this Emily Bett Rickards thread didn't start until near the end of Season 1 (if not after the season finale), so that doesn't mean anything in itself. It's just up to someone to start one and sometimes people don't until sometime later, especially if they're talking about the same subjects in the general thread or individual episode reviews.

People still disliked her. But only in Season 2 she became unbearable to the point people want her killed off. Just because there wasn't a thread around during Season 1, doesn't mean everyone liked her.

I don't know about elsewhere but people on this site disliked Laurel from the start and most thought the Huntress actress was poor.

Sadly they also messed up Huntress beyond redemption. Isn't she a cop killer now?

Not a big fan of the way the show handled Huntress. My issue with Laurel is she's not very interesting and usually doesn't really have a lot to do that does make her interesting. I like Felicity. She's cool and funny and often has a lot of things to do that make her more interesting. The show is also clearly playing up the romance angle between them even if it is just winks and nods.

Laurel is a victim of the show pandering for Felicity/Olicity and their fans. Everything she had in season 1 has been dissolved and destroyed, she is also been left with nothing because the show would rather give all the storylines she could have to Felicity or some other character. They are playing favoritism and giving preferential treatment to Felicity, Oliver/Feliciity so its not an equal footing with Laurel, Laurel/Oliver. Sure they throw scraps to other characters like Roy, Diggle, Moira, they are not in the leading lady role they are replacing with Felicity or hated by Olicity fans because they are seen as competition so they get better treated but apart from Roy who has a decent story arc almost all the other regular characters are suffering from neglect and poor storylines because the show's priorities are way to skewed towards Felicity/Olicity.

How can Laurel be interesting or contribute anything to the show when they are hellbend to push her out of existence and noone is interested in writing for her:huh:. Its one thing to say a character is boring when they are getting the fair treatment, storylines and screentime they deserve, fair enough, and another thing when they are unfairly treated with little to no screentime and given nothing to work with.

Of course they are playing up a romance on Oliver/Felicity, it doesn't take a genius to know that they would, they do just about everything the fans tell them too.

But the question is why a) are fans more interested in following EBR than Katie Cassidy and b) why doesn't KC come across as interesting enough for the writers to want to write for her?

Could it be that KC herself isn't a great actress but rather dull? It's not like she lights up the screen or has chemistry with her co-stars. She's not exactly a barrel of laughs and she doesn't bring great talent to the table.

I honestly don't miss her at all when there's a show where she doesn't feature (like in the current 2-parter).

EBR, on the other hand, is far more interesting to watch. So the writers are going to focus on her.

Yeah, I think it's a simple case of favoring the actors, that can actually act the **** out of the material they give them. Felicity was supposed to be a one off cameo, yet she's turned into one of the strongest supporting characters on the show. While Laurel, who was supposed to be the leading lady, gets barely anything worthwhile to do, and slowly pushed out of the show. Hopefully.

We can't blame the writing alone. Another person, with the exact same script, could have put an entirely different spin on the character. If it wouldn't have been for Rickards cast in the role, Felicity would have probably remained a cameo character like they intended. But they cast the right person, and basically hit gold. They cast the wrong person for Laurel, and now have no idea what the hell to do with her.

Whatever problems they have with the actress they shouldnt take it own the character. They are two separate entities and people. If you have a problem with an actor there is a thing called recast, if you keep them then you need to respect them, treat them right fairly and give them their due, simple professionalism.

I think the Arrow writers just have a habit of escapism, rather than solve what they see as not working they would rather overdose on whats popular and will appease online fans, problem solved. The amount of Felicity they have in any episode, in scenes were she isnt even needed is ridiculous. This has gone way beyond her effect on Laurel, its how she affect other characters in the show too that is actually my concern as a whole.

^ it's even more impressive when originally it was just supposed to be a one episode thing, now she's the leading lady

"Corrupt those he loves".

:hrt:

Yeah; I noticed that as well.

I was surprised that they didn't use a shot of Laurel instead; I think tonight's episode pretty much sealed the deal that Oliver and Felicity are going to hook up at some point; I mean they are practically the SHIP of the season.
