100% correct. This trailer was to appease the fans. Honestly, if Disney were confident about where the franchise was this would be a different trailer, they would have stood behind TLJ and Johnson's choices. This Episode 9 trailer is basically a concession without outright admitting they screwed up. To me, what this whole thing shows is that the sequel trilogy has never been given the proper chance to become something truly different. Lucasfilm went one extreme in TFA making things too similar, and the other extreme in TLJ making things too different. Ironically, there has been no balance in this series.

Yup, you can also bet your bottom dollar that Rian Johnson trilogy is no longer happening. Disney is distancing itself from Rian/TLJ at hyperspace speed.

I think in hindsight, once IX is out and over, we are going to look back and wish JJ had done the whole trilogy. Maybe someday we will find out what JJ's vision of VIII was. or do we already know ( I haven't been following )?

I think Disney/Lucasfilms should learn from this. If you are going to do a trilogy, it's best to try and keep the same director /creative team for the entire story. If you do have to change directors, make sure they honor what came before to form a cohesive story, instead of what Rian did and basically make his own SW film even if it contradicted what came before in TFA.

Not every trilogy needs to be done that way. Look at the Thor trilogy. Taika Waititi came in and continued on from TDW in a bonkers way, and it was awesome. Sometimes, a new voice is best. Sometimes it is not. But keeping the same director is not the only way to make a satisfactory trilogy.

Frankly I think I think the trailer was done in a way to settle down some of the TLJ haters. "Look, everyone, JJ's gonna fix it and make things better. Hes gonna make Rey a Skywalker." Just good ol marketing manipulation.
Oh, the last thing they want is to bait and switch at this point. :funny:

The problem being TLJ didn't exactly leave him a great deal to work with. Everything he set up in TFA, everything he probably assumed would be covered over the next two films, was essentially discarded. JJ has effectively had to start from scratch in many ways.
I disagree that it was discarded. Johnson answered pretty much all of the questions Abrams posed in TFA, it's just a matter of whether you like those answers or not. TLJ ended with a kind of clean slate wherein this movie could've gone anywhere. In that way I actually think it was benefit to this film. I have hints now, but I still don't really know what this story is gonna be, and that's exciting.

Comparing TLJ to TDW is perfect. :o

I hope some people give this a chance since it's suppose to be the end of the saga anyway. I know people who hate TLJ so much that they now want to boycott anything disney star wars related. They loath Katherine Kennedy

that's why I said if you do change directors, make sure the new director honors what came before and keeps the story consistent and cohesive.

Sure, a new director can bring a new voice. but don't outright just do things seemingly for the sake of defying fan expectations or for the sake of just doing your own thing, which is what Rian did with TLJ.

I'm not convinced it's happening either. It will forever been mind boggling to me they bought the biggest franchise in the world, at least at the time, and no-one had a clue what to do with it. No-one had a plan.

I easily could argue Taika came in and did his own thing very much like RJ did. Thor is too reliant on his hammer? Break it 20 mins in. Loki is ruler of Asgard. That is exposed within 5 mins and now he is not. He even killed a large part of Thor's supporting cast in the 1 and only scenes they were in, and relegated Jane and co to a comment about Thor being dumped. Ragarok very much ditched or continued points from TDW in a way very jarring from Thor's past films. Even changed the tone of everything. Taika very much made it his own. Any director I think should. Sometimes it works, other times not.

This is just flat out wrong. They had a plan. The original script was taken from Lucas idea for the ST.

Yes, it is a question of execution.

But that's the problem, neither did JJ, all his ideas were tossed aside meaning having to work with a blank page. You can't just answer all your questions in the second act of a three act series. If you were creating a trilogy of films it was imperative that all three directors, JJ, Johnson, and Trevorrow, be on the same page as to where the story is going. Hell, get them into a room together and work on that path. Give them creative control as to how you get there, but point them into the direction the story needs to go. None of that happened.

I mean, Rian's trilogy is still in development. How in the world are they distancing themselves from him.
I am kind of getting tired of talking Rian right now, but I will say this. The chances it actually gets made is probably low. They may do it on Disney+, but it is going to be hard to sell from the guy who made TLJ.

aren't the GOT people supposed to be working on another SW franchise?

I heard it may be set in the Old Republic era. frankly, I'm more interested in that than anything Rian has planned.

Everyone is getting caught up in hyberbole again.

Darth Skywalker went nuts when he learned Luke threw away the lightsaber

We’ve heard nothing on the GOT Star Wars trilogy either... doesn’t mean anything. They’re keeping cards close to their chest until this saga is done.

Sadly at a cost of Solo not being great (Disney’s fault), when they did that to themselves. This isn’t due to TLJ backlash from sad little basement nazis.

Whether or not JJ attempts to retcon aspects of TLJ or not, I don't think this movie is a "middle finger" to RJ even if he is. If he is retconning aspects of TLJ, that is just called damage control since TLJ was divisive. I don't think JJ is trying to send any type of message to RJ or anything like that. He's attempting to make a film fans like and won't get the type of response TLJ got. If they're retconning anything from TLJ, that would be why.

I don't think it'll be retconning either, but its pretty clear JJ ,is gonna do things his own way and that is different from RJ.

That's just the reality. It certainly won't be the film RJ would have made, but it was never going to be as long as RJ wasn't directing and writing it.

So no, I don't see it as a middle finger ,but its clearly not going to be TJ part 2 ,and a title like The Rise of Skywalker, doesn't scream, "time to move on from the past".

But we knew the rules going in as far as the filmmaker driven approach goes ,so I'm not that surprised JJ would lean on the past films.

I am surprised he used Skywalker in the title.

No, it's due to people who genuinely disliked TLJ.

He wanted to die. He was ashamed of his failure. He said it himself.
Luke could go anywhere in the galaxy to do that. He went to the first Jedi temple. The birth place of the Jedi. Why?

Money talks, opinions don’t.

That’s why they keep giving Burton terrible remakes... why Malificent is getting a sequel.
Why Aladdin, Lion King, etc. are coming out. They sell... not matter how meh they are all on paper and on film.
