Eternals The Eternals General Disscussion and Speculation thread

Unfortunately, making him bi increases the likelihood of them simply ignoring half of his sexuality: the same way they did with Valkyrie, where, due to the fact that she’s bi, they were able to edit the movie to make it seem like there was romantic tension between her and Thor, while they cut out the scenes with her girlfriend. I fear the same thing could happen here anyway, but making Hercules bi only increases that likelihood in my opinion. Not that I wouldn’t love to have bisexual characters in the MCU, but focusing only on their relationships with people of the opposite gender kind of takes away the whole point of making them bi in the first place. That’s just how I see it.

Also, I feel like he probably will be gay since the article mentioned that they’re looking for an openly gay actor to fill the role.

Whoa what? They filmed scenes with Valkyrie and her girlfriend? I hadn't heard about this. Who was the girlfriend?

I wonder if this is referring to Hercules...or could Carol/Valkyrie actually be a thing?

I think it was a scene with a woman either getting out of Valkyrie’s bed on Sakaar or simply leaving her bedroom, I can’t remember which it was.

I found the article, in Collider. Apparently Taika Waititi kept it in for as long as possible but then decided it distracted from exposition that was going on in the same scene, and he cut it.

That's a convenient excuse. I remember Ryan Coogler said something similar about why he cut scenes between two of the Dora Milaje who are lesbians. At least in that case, the original cut of the movie was something like four hours long but I haven't heard any such things about Ragnarok. Still love the movie but it's disappointing that either Waititi or Marvel chickened out on establishing their first bi character.

Okay, trying my hand at casting this beast...

Nice! Love those casting choices. I admittedly don't know how good of a fit those actors would be for the characters but they're all pretty great. Cynthia Erivo needs to play a superhero or supervillain because she kicks all the ass.

Definitely Cynthia Erivo: I saw a fancast of her as “Karen” the mysterious lead for this movie, too, but I’d adore her as Thena.

I think Millie as Piper is all but confirmed.

I think we're looking at Jolie, Luke Evans and Millie Bobby Brown so far

I still can’t get behind the idea of Luke Evans as Herc: it just doesn’t work for me yet. I’m still kind of hoping they choose someone unknown or just...someone who’s not Luke Evans! I don’t know why, I really like him as an actor, I think he’s great, but I just don’t see him as Herc at all. But if it’s what Marvel decides, it must be right.

Well, I am bi, and I’m still holding out hope that Valkyrie someday comes out officially. That would make me happy! :D

Same! And why not really

I'm bi as well, and I do agree that bi erasure is an annoying problem, especially on film. I feel like, all too often, screenwriters don't know how to handle bi characters and often write them as either predominantly gay or predominantly straight. And while there's plenty of leaning more one way or the other in the bi community (for example, I've mostly dated women), a lot of movies don't seem able to grasp the concept that there are plenty of bi people who like both sexes (and non-binary people) equally. Anyway, in this case, since it sounds like this version of Hercules was only bi in an alternate timeline version (and he hooked up with Wolverine - and you KNOW Marvel isn't going to make him bi or gay), I think Marvel can do what they want here and make the character 100% gay if that's what they choose to do.

Thank you for sharing this, very interesting points here. Honestly sexuality is so interesting. I don’t even think we have all the right language yet to describe everyone which is pretty cool.

Oh my gosh I would love that! They would be so cute. They can be like the mums of the avengers while tony and Steve were the dads.

They should have kept it.

100% this

Of course, there’s no reason why you couldn’t have a bi character AND a gay character. You could even have straight characters but personally I wouldn’t recommend that because I don’t agree with the straight lifestyle choice

The story and film should always come first.

Don't see him as Hercules either. Just the wrong kind of personality. Get him as someone more intellectual than someone who's mainly brawn and more interested in hedonistic pursuits or fighting.

That's true but all too often gay and bi subplots, which can be a key part of the story, are often excised because "Oh, well, it didn't need to be there." How interesting that those are the things that are viewed as superfluous when so many films manage to cram in tons of jokes and other subplots that detract from the main story. You're going to tell me that Black Panther would have suffered so much from two of the Dora Milaje sharing a tender moment together but it absolutely NEEDED Andy Serkis singing "What Is Love?"

That should be for the director to decide.

What is Love was a crucial part of the movie and contributed to the box office success.
