Eternals The Eternals General Disscussion and Speculation thread

That’s fine for you but some people want representation for a lead because their life lacked one when growing up. I’m sure those who never got it when they were growing up would like the next generation of kids to have something they never got in a super hero film.

If you want a story that represents you, then create it.
There is not film ever made that represents me.
Let's make the lead a blind one legged Sri Lankan, because they have never been represented growing up.

Make a good film. If that is about two gay people that have found love, fantastic. If it is about a person of colour, or disability or whatever and it makes someone who is hurting feel better then great.

But concentrate on making a good film, not a political statement.

How many gay/Bi/Queer actors are out and could be cast that aren’t complete unknowns?

Luke Evans
Matt Bomer
Ben Whishaw
Charlie Carver
Ezra Miller
Lee Pace (already In GotG/CM)
Zachary Quinto
Wentworth Miller
Jim Parsons (please no)
Neil patrick Harris (NO!)
Guillermo Diaz
Cheyenne Jackson
Colton Haynes

Probably missing some but it’s a start.

Actors act. A gay actor can play a straight person, a straight person can play gay. The whole point of acting is pretending to be someone else

However, the article specifically says Marvel is looking for an openly gay actor, ages 30-49.

Shockingly, it is possible to do both. Second of all, having LGBTQ characters or people of color does not make a film a political statement.

Never said it did. If it is a good story i don't care what race, sex, sexuality, religion. But some posters on here seem to think representation is the most important thing.

So just a hunch ...but I'm guessing this will be the recipient the next hate train? Buckle up! Lol

Few idiots on YouTube are meaningless. Won't matter to box office because the vast majority of people just want to see a good film.

Which is discrimination.

Well, I for one am glad that Marvel is going to cast an actual gay person in the role, since up till now it seems that doing so is anathema to people. There always seems to be greater backlash when a gay actor is cast in a gay role, than when a straight person is. I don’t believe all gay roles need to be filled by gay actors, but if you’re making a big deal of it being the first gay character, it just doesn’t make sense from a marketing standpoint to cast a straight man. In my opinion.

And gay actors should be paid for playing gay characters. Especially when straight actors claim stuff like “playing a gay character was the scariest thing an actor has done” sort of stuff.

Exactly.

Who you fall in love with or have sex with should never be a part of the job interview.

Exactly.

I'm sure gay actors are paid for playing gay characters.

If a straight actor can't play the role they shouldn't get the role in the first place.

Oh, but it so often is. That’s why LGBTQ actors get too few roles.

Do they? I can't speak for Hollywood but I worked for film 4 (channel 4) in the UK and there was a very healthy representation of the LGBTQ community. Far more than in probably most industries (at least openly).

Have we got any statistics of how many LGBTQ actors there are and how many roles they get compared to straight actors?

Honestly, I'm just looking forward to seeing who Marvel gets to join this cast. That's one of my favorite things about a new franchise is seeing who gets involved and what actors are joining the MCU

Are you part of the LGBTQ community?

Why should that matter?

If we want equality then everybody should be treated equal. Judged on ability rather than who you have sex or fall in love with.

Because straight people don’t need to hunt for good representation. It’s always been there, especially for superheroes. People who happen to be in the LGBTQ community or kids trying to figure it all out at a young age, a gay hero means a whole lot. Positive representation matters.

Not trying to fight, just trying to discuss it from a different angle.

2014, and 2016, respectively

And, our very own @AResistor can (and has) shared a story from his own time in the entertainment industry, when a gay actor was turned down immediately for a role with no questions asked.

This post says it best. Representation matters.

You are arguing something I haven't said. I wouldn't mind if all the characters were LGBTQ, or played by LGBTQ actors.

But story and making a good film should come first. Just make the best film possible.

If it doesn’t matter to you, why then does it now matter to you?

I don’t see why having a gay character or something gets in the way of making a good film, in any way.

But why is making a good film somehow hindered by casting a gay man, then?

If it doesn’t matter to you, why then does it suddenly matter to you?

Please quote a post where I have said I didn't want a gay actor to have the role? Or it is hindered.

I phrased that post wrong, sorry about that. I mean to say: it seems to matter to you, even though you’ve just said it doesn’t matter to you. I’m confused about which it is.

I think it’s the fact that you don’t seem to understand the importance because you aren’t the one who needs to see it. For a gay/queer person it means a lot more to them than a straight person.

The rest of the cast will probably be straight so there’s really nothing to worry about. Sadly, they are probably going to make him gay and then have him not have any gay partner/love interest so it doesn’t anger any overseas screenings. I’d be happy to be wrong about that though.

I’m just excited to see who they cast for Sersi (and the rest of the roles!)
