Eternals The Eternals General Disscussion and Speculation thread

Yeah, I figured a mash up character would fill TFO's role but keep Herc's big personality. Maybe Gilgamesh will be working with the baddie?

Netflix crossover confirmed!

Actually, I think Karen is going to be one of Marvel's oldest female heroes.

A previous poster mentioned the lovely Jameela Jamil for another role, but she would be a terrific choice to play ethnically diverse space goddess.

There are a lot of characters, but you should probably count on a few - maybe Elysisus and TFO? - being baddies alongside Druig.
I expect Jamil to get a CBM role in the not too distant future. She's up for it too judging by comments she has made.

They mention a greek god. Not sure if they'd do both hercules and the forgotten one. We'll see though.
Not sure but I would love to see Hercules asap.

After reading that article, I don't know how to feel about the Greek god character being potentially Hercules. The fact Gilgamesh seems to also be mentioned as separate casting makes me think some connection between Eternals and Greek gods will be explored but whether or not they are kept separate like in the comics is still a question.

Okay, let's see...
Golden Age: There's Golden Age Venus pictured in above post (Timely or Atlas Comics before becoming Marvel).

Silver Age: Then there's the re-booted Marvel Comics Venus (otherwise known by Greek name Aphrodite) introduced in Sub-Mariner 57 in 1973. From there it appears she becomes an activist of sorts on earth then later a Humanities professor for an earthly identity before ultimately going back to Olympia and appears randomly alongside her Greek counterparts in comics afterwards.

Golden Age Retconned into being a Fake Version?: Where it get's confusing is the character re-appearing in Marvel: The Lost Generation in 2000 and later in Agents of Atlas where the character appears in a 1950's superhero squad. This character is retconned into being a fake Venus (Aphrodite). I'm just not sure how this fake Venus ties to the version introduced in the Golden Age or Silver Age?

**I'm guessing the fake Venus appearing in Agents of Atlas was Marvel's attempt to tie in the Golden Age character to 616 universe since the Silver Age version had already re-booted the character?

The greek god has to be Hercules... either him, or Ares.

Why not Rami Malek for Makkari or Ikaris?

The character matches the That Hashtag Show description, dates back to the Timely era, was a key member of the 50s era Avengers/Agents of Atlas and fits within the Greek Pantheon that inspired The Eternals. You got a better guess?

I’d love it if Venus showed up in this. Slowly lead towards an Agents of ATLAS.

Or not at all if going by the non-fake Venus introduced in the Silver Age...

Establishment of Fake Venus:
Agents of Atlas Vol.1 #5:
Fake Venus Retconned into 616 continuity
Venus' true origins were revealed by Namora: this Venus was actually a soulless Sirenthat lured sailing ships to her with her voice and fed on the sailors. To prevent his ship and his crew from being feed on, the captain of a merchant ship hired a mystic to kill her. The mystic instead gave her a soul. The Siren then took the form of a beautiful woman (forbidding herself to speak again) and was taken in by a nunnery, where she lived for decades and believed herself a mute servant girl, until she joined a chorus, filling the visiting clergy with lust. She was then expelled from the nunnery. Learning how to use her voice for good, she blocked out all memories of her previous life and assumed that she was Venus reborn, based on the legends she had heard about a beautiful, immortal girl wandering the world as a goddess in a human body and winning her battles with the power of "love". 'Venus' resurfaced in the 1940s and acted as a superhero. Learning the truth about her past, Venus fell into despair and nearly destroyed her companions with her song. Jimmy Woo resisted her song and reminded her of all the good she had done, restoring her belief in herself, which allowed her to reverse the effects on the others.Venus (Marvel Comics) - Wikipedia

I'm guessing this fake Venus seems to tie into the Golden Age depiction as opposed to Silver Age Depiction as I mentioned in above post (I'm still confused on this). In any case the real Venus punishes the fake one for impersonating her according to the wikipedia entry.

By the way, this cover is awesome:

Forgive my ignorance, I'm just familiarising myself with the source material, but how would it make sense to have Eros (Starfox) or even a Thanos cameo in The Eternals movie if it takes place a million years ago? Have Eros and Thanos been around that long? I realize they're "eternals" but as I understand it there are still different generations of eternals (A'lars and then his father Kronos) and, being set a million years ago, the movie would be more based on those characters.

Geez I’m shocked more people aren’t talking about Eros. I wonder how you do Eros in the #metoo era. He’s definitely come off as sleazy in the past.
That's putting it mildly, lol. He straight-up raped some women, even though it was later established that it was Thanos who made him do it.

Oh, that Thanos.

Mmm, when you put it that way it does sound possible. She's such an obscure character, though... then again, so was Star-Lord.

Venus: Thinking about it some more, Venus (aphrodite) whether fake or not perhaps is unlikely to be the character in the movie since she's never been depicted as an Eternal in the comics.

Athena: If anything, I can see them using Athena from the Greek Pantheon instead. The eternal Thena (birthname Azura) impersonates her for the ancient greeks shortly after being born due to a pact made with the greek pantheon that is the best way to reference a connecting point to the Greek pantheon if in fact the movie is still keeping eternals and greek gods separate like in the comics.

Here's a post I made on Athena a while ago (along with casting suggestion):
Yeah, I suppose she's a choice but certainly not the only one.

As she plays Zeus daughter Athena in "Immortals", I suppose it would make sense for her to play Thena in Eternals. Or I suppose she could just play an MCU version of Athena if Eternals and Greek gods share a movie together.

Comic Deptiction of Thena:

On a sidenote, I found it interesting how Marvel Comics has some greek god characters and Eternals separate yet to make things confusing some Eternals mimic the Greek Gods to appease nearby neighboring people.

Eternal Comics Thena: In Eternal comics, Thena's father is Zuras (whose the ruling son of Kronos after Kronos dies in experiment that activates the Eternal Genes). She impersonates the greek goddess Athena (daughter of Zeus). This is because the Eternal city of Olympia is separate from where the greek gods live which is on the other side of a portal near Olympia at least from what I can discern from the comics.Immortals

All aliases assumed by Eternal Thena (impersonates Athena) here: Azura (Earth-616)
*Athena alias established as being mistook as established in early 1990's Eternals: The Herod Factor one-shot. Azura being her actual name and Thena being changed to after Zuras's pact with Greek gods.
*Few civilian names in Eternals Vol.2 published in 1980's
*Corona alias briefly assumed in Eternals Apocalypse: Now" one-shot published in 2000
*Minerva alias retconned into being mistook as. Merkury, Pluto, and Minerva (of Red Raven #1) were retconned as makkari, kro, and thena as well as Hurricane (Captain America Comics #1) to Makkari. The retcon took place in mid-1990's in Marvel Universe #4-#7 (Issues seen here Marvel Universe (Volume) - Comic Vine)

They could easily just make her the real one. They switch up backstories all the time in the MCU.

Marvel Studios has got to have a tough time looking up characters to use in their films as there's so much information on any given character that everything is just amalgamated together about a character's appearance irregardless of publishing history. I can imagine anyone (even those really familiar with comics) losing track and having quite a time looking anything up on any given character because of this.

What do you think about my casting suggestion?

Sersi - Adria Arjona

Ikaris - Orlando Bloom

Makkari - Tom Ellis

Thena - Rosamund Pike

Zuras - Ian McShane

Druig - Liev Schreiber

Gilgamesh - Rami Malek

Elysius - Sofia Boutella

Starfox - Matthew McConaughey

Oh I thought Ikaris and Sersi would? Still, pretty cool!

Okay so here's my theory about the identity of Karen: she's Angela, and instead of being an Asgardian (and Thor's second lost sister), she'll be an Eternal.

Now, I know "nurturing" isn't the first adjective that comes to mind when thinking of Angela, but this isn't the comics.

Kind of hard to do Angela now surely? I mean, Hela took her role as Thor’s sister.

Not impossible and personally I would love to see Angela

I think Angela would be odd as an Eternals character, especially when she’s been tied so heavily to Thor since her Marvel debut.

I assume we’ll get a scene where it’s Eternals talking about one or two or more being “woken” on earth or something. I figure they’ll heavily take from Gaiman’s run as a jumping off point. I really want them to cast Sersi though.

Okay but again, the MCU isn't the comics, and I doubt many people would protest if Marvel changed her backstory.

Karen I initially thought was Margot Damien.

I don't believe she really fits the strong leader type the casting calls for but is more than likely a supporting character that will turn up at some point... She can be seen appearing alongside her archeologist father Daniel Damien and cameraman Ike Harris (Ikaris) whom she begins a relationship with on the cover of Eternals Vol.1. Just a thought, but maybe the movie will feature her mother who will perhaps be named Karen.

Tie-ins to the 616 universe with Sheild and Hulk within Volume 1 seem to have been forced by editorial before Volume 1 abruptly ended. Therefore, it seems odd that Dr. Daniel Damien actually appeared in Fantastic Four Vol.1 #64 in 1967 which is about 9 years before Eternals Vol.1 #1 even came out.

Daniel Damien's appearances in total are:
1967: FF #64
Doctor Daniel Damian was an archaeologist and father of Margo Damian. During an expedition on a tropical island, he discovered a hidden Kree base, guarded by Sentry 459. He and his assistant were imprisoned by the Sentry and saved by the Fantastic Four
1976: Eternals Vol. #1-4
Later, Daniel hired a cameraman named Ike Harris (actually the Eternal known as Ikaris) to guide his daughter and he through the ruins of an Incan temple in the Andes Mountains and document the event. When they arrived at the ruins, they discovered an immense God Chamber filled with artifacts and technological wonders unlike anything else found on Earth. Ikaris revealed his true heritage to Doctor Damian and his daughter and activated a cosmic beacon to summon the great Celestials. Damian was present when the Deviant overlord Kro invaded the temple and challenged the approaching "Gods"[2]. He was also witness to the resurrection of Ajak and the arrival of the Fourth Celestial Host[3].

Arishem the Judge set down in the City of the Space Gods where it was decreed he would stand in judgment over Earth for a span of fifty years. Upon his arrival, the City of the Space Gods was sealed off from the rest of humanity. Ikaris and Margo Damian managed to escape before they were trapped for half a century, but Doctor Damian, unwilling to see the treasures of the Incan past lost forever, elected to stay behind
1989: Thor Vol.#1 291 (1 issue of long ongoing Thor: Eternal Saga that first appearance of Eternals after Vol.1 ended)
1991: Eternals: The Herod Factor
After the murder of his daughter Margo, Dr. Damian wanted revenge against Deviants and Eternals. To this end he planted false prophecies about the twin offspring of Eternals and Deviants conquering the 2 races and mutated Ajak into a monster that began killing human sets of twins. Later he had Thena and Kro's twins Donald and Deborah Ritter kidnapped in the hopes he could make their parents witness their demise. Ikaris discovered his friends betrayal and with the Eternals confronted Dr. Damian. Ajak disgusted with what Damian had turned him into killed himself and Damian by exploding.

Margot Damien's Appearances in total are:
1976-1977: Eternals vol.1 (most issues)
She becomes Ikaris's girlfreind through the course of these issues.
Margo Damian was the daughter of famous archeologist Daniel Damian. She accompanied him and a cameraman named Ike Harris (who turned out to be the Eternal Ikaris) on an expedition where they discovered the existence of the Celestials, Deviants, and Eternals[1]. When the Celestials sealed off the City of the Space Gods, she escaped with Ikaris while her father stayed behind. Ikaris left her in the care of Sersi while he went to fend off the Deviants' attack on New York City[2]. They were both captured by Kro's forces[3]. When Thena and Kro agreed on a truce to reveal their races' existence to humanity, Margo suggested that they seek out Professor Samuel Holden, a colleague of her father
1979-80: Thor Vol.1 284-286, 291
1985-1986: Eternals vol.2 (most issues)
She was killed when she was turned into a Deviant to get to Ikaris
