I wouldn't rule out anything because they don't need the writer's permission to adapt their story.

Gotcha - have they worked very closely with any other comic book authors before? I remember that Kelly Sue DeConnick was at least involved enough to warrant a cameo in the film.

Do we know when it's set? I've seen a lot of speculation that it's a prequel to the entire MCU, but no concrete proof. Mind you, I hope that's what it is - that would be such a fun change of pace.

No specifics, but it's supposed to take place over the span of many, many years

Given their, umm... eternal nature they could do a film where it all takes place in the past for the vast majority of the film. It would be a change of pace.

Will they? That I am a lot less confident of. There's doing TFA or CM and then there's doing a film that takes place up to 100,000's years ago. I would love it but it brings issues, from will the audience go for it to the cost of creating a past world for a film's entire run time that Feige would take into consideration I think.

Well she was hardly recognisable in Captain Marvel and I agree it was a waste of a role. But I would've liked her to be in Shang Chi. Maybe though they feel that she would completely outshine Awkwafina in every frame and reduce Awkwafina to a completely comedy role similar to Kat Dennings as Darcy.

I’m glad it wasn’t a bigger role so that it’s easy to use her again.

I thought maybe Chan would turn up again as a "last minute escape" Minn-erva in a CM sequel, but this puts that idea to bed.

Why not put her in Shang Chi where she won't be overshadowed by Angelina Jolie or Salma Hayek? She could potentially have a much bigger role there.

She was under enough makeup in CM that I doubt most people will really notice she's playing another character. Also, when Marvel hired her for CM, she wasn't exactly a recognizable name to most people in the US but Crazy Rich Asians really blew up her name.

I’m gonna sound absurd, but Chan is definitely Elysius (assuming Elysius is still in the film). Not only does she resemble the character, but there’s already a link between Elysius and the Kree that could be used to explain the casting, if Marvel so chooses: in the comics, Elysius is Mar-Vell’s lover and mother of his children: by artificially impregnating herself or whatever and creating basically clone children. And there you go - Minn-Erva was merely one of her descendants who happened to bear her same looks.
I know I’m wrong - but I enjoy being creative with my theorizing.
