Eternals The Eternals General Disscussion and Speculation thread

Feel bad for the cast, especially Kumail. You can tell he’s someone who literally put his body through hell for the role. And then end up being in Marvel’s worst reviewed movie.
Eh… the movie likely be better received with audiences and fans and gets a A Cinemascore and a certified fresh audience rating and a decent opening and good holdovers. This movie will do well enough, even though Marvel won’t ever be committed to a straight sequel to this. Being in a weakly reviewed Marvel film stinks and all, but as long as the box office is strong(which it will be) the weak critical reception isn’t going to matter in the long run.

Just got back from my early screening.

Thank you, Chuck Norris!

Soooo my screening ended and I've gathered my thoughts about the film. Does it deserve to be the MCU's first rotten film? Absolutely not. Is it the worst MCU film? No way. But I do rank it on the lower-tier side of the franchise. For me it's on par with Age of Ultron, Captain Marvel, etc. There was something missing from it and I'm not exactly sure what it is. It didn't give me those warm fuzzy feelings I get when I watch a film that I enjoy and have an urge to see it again despite me liking the character ensemble. Maybe it was the script?? I'm not sure exactly. But for now I rank this as my least enjoyable MCU film of the year so far. Shang-Chi was sooo much better and sooo much more cohesive. Idk I was expecting more from this film based on all the so called insiders who hyped this up to be a potential Oscar BP.
Like I said something was missing from this. You could tell Marvel really tried to do something different and something with more depth to it but it wasn't a home run. I think it might lack...heart??

6.5-7ish/10 for me

I'm seeing it again on Friday so I hope I feel differently about it on a second viewing. I'm not really sure how this will do box office wise but it wouldn't surprise me if this ends up as the lowest grossing MCU film of the year. I'm just not sure how the audience will accept this, it's not a crowd pleaser. My early screening was packed and was shown on an IMAX screen and while it did get some laughs throughout, the applause at the end was very tepid.

I can't feel too bad for him. He's got a lovely family and an Academy Award. Not the end of the world. It's still a step up from having a bit part in Mike & Dave Need Wedding Dates.

The way I see it (and I won't be able to see it until next Tuesday) is that people have been complaining about Marvel being same same same. Okay, IF Marvel has done something different, some people are going to complain complain complain and there will never be a movie that everyone likes.

I'm down with seeing it and maybe my buddy @Docker2.0 is right and it will bomb at the BO. If so, then so be it. I mean he's GOT to be right at some point. :cwink:

I think it'll be on the lower end of projections, but 75M seems decent.

Anyway, I'm stoked to see it and hope I like it.

I enjoyed it. Very human movie which feels refreshing. Soft 8 in terms of score.

Just saw it too. Thought it would be, as many made it out to be, disjointed, messy, too many flashbacks, too much talking, pacing issue that drags, but that's none of that. It's quite easy to follow what it is about, and it's the first time in a long while i didn't go to a toilet break for a 2 hours+ movie because it's quite engaging. It's beautifully shot. Yet, the main lovers lack chemistry to make the ultimate choice convincing, and I think Ikaris, while look pretty, is rather wooden.

Anyway, easily 8/10 for me.

I actually enjoyed it. Did not feel like an MCU film at all apart from the references. I think the film suffers from the same reasons I did not like Prometheus. It introduces all these big ideas and themes and doesn't really follow through on them.

Nonetheless yeah I can see why critics are divided on it. Will definitely watch it a second time. Also action in the 3rd act was nicely done. Makkari:hrt:

If the movie does well at the box office despite the low review score do they bring back Chloe or move on?

Define "does well" more specifically.

If the movie does really well and exceeds expectations, I would say bring her back. What the audience thinks is more important at the end of the day.

Now, if the movie just squeeks by, then I would say changing director may be best or you could go either way.

From what I’ve read, Kumail’s character is one of the best parts of the movie. So even if this movie bombs in box office and audience reception, I could totally see individual characters from the movie (who are fan favorites) return in other MCU movies. Even if we don’t get an Eternals 2, I’m sure we’ll get the return of several characters in the movie in other MCU movies.

Just saw it. There are some elements I think could have been handled better (the villains, a few worldbuilding choices and some questions about the presented morality of some characters), but overall I quite liked it. But then I am someone who really really likes the grand cosmic stuff like the celestials and who enjoys non-linear stories. If anything I may actually have liked them to go more cosmic and spend more time in different timeperiods of human history. But I can definitely see how other people already thought it was too much in this movie and not like it because of that. I hope the reception to this film doesn't scare Marvel away from doing out-there cosmic stuff or stories set over longer periods in the future.

Wow this is the most frustrated and disappointed I have been with a film since Independence Day: Resurgence. Now, I'm not saying its as bad as that movie since I consider it one of the worst sequels ever, but at the same time nothing about this really clicked with me either, especially the world building.

I didn't think I could like a MCU movie less than I did Ant-Man & The Wasp, but I thought this was even worse than that movie mostly because of how much of a chore that entire second half was to get through.

It's still early but as of right now this is easily my least favorite MCU film so far.

"The Eternals" was Marvel going against type. I think it'll be one that might age better in people's minds/hearts.

I'd give it a 7, but I'm still processing what I saw.

This is how I'm starting to feel. On an entertainment level, I was engaged throughout coz I know nothing of the Cosmic MCU. But the script, editing etc was bleh.

I wonder who cut/edit this movie? Chloe or she left it to the 2 person that was hired(Dylan Tichenor and Craig Wood)? Seems to me pacing seems to be a bit of a problem but I wonder if an Director's Cut/Studios Cut would/could elevate this movie?

I'd give Marvel more credit for the movie being different if I significantly liked any of the characters and enjoyed what I was seeing when I just didn't.

Also, the performances felt very awkward and clunky. Ikaris and Sersi were not a believable romantic pairing. No chemistry or fire there at all. Angelina Jolie...I have no idea what was going on with her. It was badly executed attempt at PTSD. Jolie looked like she was phoning it in every scene. She looked bored and uninterested out of her mind. It reminded me of Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique.

Also, the Deviants are just bad and awful. Just awful and absolutely useless. Badly written. Badly executed.

I agree with this. There are some enjoyable performances, but overall there is no one to really like or care for.

My favorite character in the group was Kingo...and then look what they did to his character.

Here's my thing about Kingo. Kingo shows up and finally you have a character who is funny, charming, has some wit...and then...they do something really dumb with his character that made no sense to me. Like why would you do that with your best and most entertaining character in the film?

I thought Kingo was the breakout character in this. Kumail Nanjiani really gave it his all and you could tell how excited he was to be in it.

I'm assuming you mean
him bailing on the team for the end battle? That was the thing I hated most about the movie.

Yes. That's called bad writing and storytelling.

It'd be like the equivalent of Han Solo not coming in to save Luke at the last minute at the end of Star Wars.

Yeah exactly. Also, the movie sort of established that they really needed everyone to do that combined resonance to stop the Celestial birth. Taking Kingo out of the equation made no sense. And then Kingo is back with them after the battle like nothing happened. That really ticked me off.
