The Evil Within: Some May Call It an Evil that is Resident

Yeah, definitely. I just finished Chapter 5, after a particularly frustrating sequence, so I've got a lot of thoughts to put together.

So, Digital Foundries did their examination of the game, and pretty much ripped it up as far as framerate goes. I really don't get it, I'm playing the game on the Xbox One now, and I was really surprised that it seems to be running stably despite hearing a lot of negative about dipping framerate. I'm not sure if their article is pre-patch (written before the embargo maybe) or what, but I'm really not having any issues with the way the game is running.

Some video reviews have noted some framerate drops and issues for the PS4 version, so that's probably what they are looking at.

Their article covered the current gen (PS4/Xbone) and PC, I believe. They said both console versions ran horribly. I'll dig up the article and post, pretty brutal stuff. I really don't get it myself; I'm not having any major problems with the performance.

So plays more like a Silent Hill game? Neato.

Well a lot of chunks of it are a lot like RE4. Chapter 2 seems to be right out of the beginning of RE4.

Playing this now. 20 minutes in. Its kind of like if the Tomb Raider reboot was a horror game. This would be it so far

Did you mean Chapter 3? Because Chapter 2 didn't strike me at all like RE4. I had to use stealth the entire time, had like no ammo at all for half of it. The third chapter, though, yeah, gave me RE4 vibes.

No, it's more the imagery and storytelling. It's way more SH than RE in any form. Play-style wise it's closer to RE, but it's still pretty different.

Whichever chapter takes you through the rural looking village.

Also man, the dialogue in the game is horrible. I realize some things don't translate well into English and comes from a Japanese style, but man some of this dialogue...It's like a tin ear for dialogue.

Unfortunately the protagonist is an emotionless cipher.

Wish they could've worked with a better writer to make some better dialogue and characterizations for the game.

It was 1996 "Master of Unlocking" levels of bad.

Still didn't grab my copy yet, but what are the issues with the ps4 version?

Only through chapter 2. Boring story. Nothing original. Seems like a carbon copy of re4. No scares. Send a memo the proper way for horror is 1st person. Dumb ai. Horrible game

Not to mention lag is worse than sh downpour for worst horror game lag

I'd say give it a little bit more time. Chapter 2 isn't too far into the game. Sounds like you're coming from a similar place I did. I was REALLY disappointed with this game when I started playing it.

While unfortunate, I had to play maybe an hour and ten minutes into it before I finally started enjoying it. The game is LOADS of fun and I'm glad I stuck with it. I couldn't understand why it was getting such great reviews but now, now I kind of understand.

The narrative isn't strong and yeah the dialog is pretty cringe worthy. Graphics also aren't that impressive. Kind of looks like a Playstation 3 game in my opinion. I've been experiencing some bad frame rate issues mostly just during the cutscenes.

That's about all my complaints though. If you're able to look past that, then you're in for a treat. Just wait until you start fighting the "monsters". I thoroughly enjoyed the little skirmishes they throw at you. Some of them can be SUPER harrowing. Nothing too scary though which is unfortunate.

I'm only to Chapter 6 thus far.

I finally got some free time to play, and just started, but is the camera always so close to you? I mean, I guess I'll get used to it, but it's so close, that you just see the upper part of his back and head. You don't even see his legs or feet.

I dunno, I just don't like how close it is. Why not just make it in first person if it's going to be this close?

Is your camera like this? http://abload.de/img/evilwithin2014-10-160z3kcd.png

Yeah, it's like that.

And I can tell I'm already gonna have problems with this game, and it's all due to the X1 controller. The bumpers are horrible on that thing. My hands are already cramping after 30-40 of play.

I see :( Well, I hope they patch something into the game if this is an issue with many.

For the PC version, I think there are some user-made fixes for it already.

I could see how one may be disappointed in the story if they don't know what the expect, but having played most of Mikami's games beforehand, I know not to expect a good story. The best one is the original Resident Evil, but even that is only a passable story with some spots of horrible dialouge. Mikami's game has always been about game design and storytelling through that as opposed to plot.

You lost all creditability here. You've either not played The Evil Within or RE4, because this game is not even close to a "carbon copy" of RE4. The first two chapters are almost forced stealth, which was never even an option in RE4 at any point. Not to mention just the overall mechanics are quite different on even the surface levels.

And there's been plenty of "proper" horror in third person, so that point is nonsense.

Yeah, it's nothing like RE4 to me. It's actually more like Splinter Cell than anything. TONS of sneaking around and crouching.

Aside from my hands cramping from the X1 controller, I like it. I'm not far, but I think I'll only be able to play this game in 30-45 min stretches before I have to put it down.

So, I've been meaning to collect my thoughts on the game.

First off, it's a rather hard game to classify. It's a survival horror, clearly, but you can't really point to one certain series and say , 'Yeah, it's like that'. The mechanics have similarities to RE4, but once you play it more, you realize it's more a passing resemblance than anything. The overall style and tone of the game is much more in tone with Silent Hill, though, at least so fair (I'm on Chapter 7 out of, I believe, 15), so it's hard to tell where it's going. The section I'm at now feels more RE-ish. The pacing feels like it's going in a similar direction as RE4, which things gradually getting bigger and bigger, but I can't say that yet.

It's use of stealth, especially, make it stick out from RE. The first 2 chapters basically force you to go stealth since you're given almost no ammunition at first. It does feel like the option becomes a little less viable as you progress, but they may be because I'm being super conservative with my ammo, since the game definitely calls back to the older RE titles with how little ammo it actually gives you. There's been numerous occasions where I got into a fire fight and ended up with only a few bullets. It's definitely tense, but not extreme enough where you feel like the game is screwing you over or anything. You will find plenty of ammo pick-ups, but usually with a small amount of bullets. Plus, before you upgrade your capacity, your guns can only hold a small amount of bullets. I think the first pistol you get only holds 10 at first.

And boy, this game is hard. I remember Mikami said he was going for challenging, but I guess I was torn off by it somewhat. Enemies, even common ones, can be really deadly. Before I upgraded my stamina, I was dying in two or three hits. How the enemies behave is similar to RE4, but they tend to be a little quicker, and a swarm of them is bad news.

Part of the difficulty comes, too, from the odd camera and aiming. It is a TPS, but I can't think of one where the camera gets so close to you like this, especially when aiming. It's disorienting. I think this is Mikami's way of reinventing the old tank controls and fixed camera angles from the old school RE titles. I think it works, because it gives that strange off feeling without being frustrating. It's not as cheap as those old RE tricks, it just throws you off from what you're used to in the genre.

The game can straddle the fence between challenging and frustrating, though. Mainly because the game really doesn't tell you much. It explains the basic concepts in brief snippets, but a lot of it is left up to you to figure out. For example, the chapter 5 boss: you are shown through an earlier sequence what to do to kill it, but when you get to the battle itself, it's not very clear exactly how you do it. This resulted in a lot of me running around like an idiot trying to figure out what it was that I was actually suppose to do. This was particularly teeth grinding, because the boss kills in one shot. I actually had to stop and walk away from that one for awhile. Another, more general, example is that when you first find a glass bottle, the game tells you you can use it to distract enemies or stealth kill them. How? Well, figure it out your ****ing self is pretty much the games reply.

The art-style of the game is...just fantastic. The imagery, particularly, is striking, as well as the sound design. I'm getting vague memories of Silent Hill 2 in them so far. The use of shadows, especially, gives the game such a unique visual feel. The environment is so tense and oppressive in the early chapters. That first enemy sequence was nerve-wrecking to the say the least.

So, overally, thus far at about the halfway point I'm really enjoying the game. Depsite reports of this running really horrible on consoles, I'm not having any real issues on the Xbox One version I'm playing. There's a lot of echoes of other games in it, but it really is it's own original little creation. It's not really like anything else out there in how it presents its elements. I'm optimistic that this is going to stack up pretty well. It's not for the "casual" player, though, that much is for sure.

I don't care about what type of credibility I lose on here. I'm giving my honest feelings. The first two chapters that I've played there are guys with chainsaws, ritual slayings and bad acting and cheap storyline. So don't tell me what games I play and what games I haven't played

Then don't say things that imply that you haven't. Any person who has actually played these two games could easily see they are far from "carbon copies" of one another. A few cosmetic and stylistic similarities, sure, but the first two chapters of TEW are so different from RE4 that basing that off a "carbon copy" raises my eye.

Plus your silly first person horror comment just sounds like you're trying to spread an agenda anyway.

Your "review" has more than convinced me.....

I'll be picking up the game. You are typically a terrible judge when it comes to the quality of a game so if you think its bad, it's almost a certainty the game is actually quite good. I'm excited to pick this up.
