The Expendables 3 - Part 1

That better be good because Rambo 4 impressed me.

Saw it yesterday and for the most part it was alright, it's pretty much my junk food for films. There's some good and some not so good in this one (like the previous 2 only less bloody). I will say Mel Gibson, Wesley Snipes, Antonio Banderas, and Arnold Schwarzenegger did a great job in it...especially Mel who had some great monologues.

And I have to say...Ronda Rousey is slightly better than Gina Carano in the acting department.

I say they were equally as wooden; not to mention that we only see Rousey deliver only a handful of lines, compared to Carano having much more dialogue in both Haywire and FF. Rousey's mean mugging quickly becomes annoying.

Btw, I just saw Haywire and MAN was that a bad movie. That was a prime example of a trailer making a movie look much better than it actually was. One of the most boring "Action" movies I've ever seen.

Not to mention, it shows that even good actors/actresses can come off as bad, when the script and direction of said movie is bad - ala Haywire's supporting cast of good talent.

Hard to say because she had probably had 5 lines in all of Haywire. :oldrazz:

Rousey had more charisma than Gina.

I know right?! It had Banderas, Tatum, McGregor, Fassenbeneder, Douglas...what the Heck happened? The production value was just so incredibly poor, the pacing was absolute crap, and no offense to Carano because I do think she has charms to her but she could not hold that movie together.

I was actually very much looking forward to watching "In The Blood" also starring Carano because the trailer looked awesome but after Haywire I'll pass...

I hope Rambo 5 is going to be Stallones next movie, I thought 4 was the perfect way to end it personally.

Rambo 4 should've been the last one. It's a flat circle now, and he's pulling the same crap that he did in the 80's: not being able to restrain himself DESPITE his intelligence, which I think he isn't given enough credit for.

This is the same director who's going to do The Raid remake.

, Let it die Sly. The way 4 ended was perfect for the franchise.

The PG-13 rating and the leaked copy of this film DID NOT hurt this movie's box office take. People tend to forget that the 2nd movie (which was rated R) did worse at the box office then the first movie. Also, a DVD screener of the first movie was leaked online a few days after the first movie was released, and that movie was the number one movie for the weekend (and week) in the country. The EXPENDABLES movies are flopping because the novelty of seeing all of these action stars working together has worn off after the first movie. Like Daffy Duck drinking nitroglycerin and lighting a match and swallowing it and blowing himself up, this is one of those acts that you can only do once.

Agreed, Haywire bored me.

- Liked Wesley Snipes alot, bring on Blade reboot?!
- Antonio Banderas stole the show
- Mel Gibson was good.

However this movie should have cut those helicopters out, if you can't afford helicopters, don't show CGI ones.

Maybe, if we're lucky, they will release an unrated version of the move on blu ray.
Here is the thing. You can't really make a PG-13 movie out of something truly hard-R. You could see that with the Expendables 2. So the R version of this film, will still be very tame.

A couple people convinced me to see this today. Not terrible, but not very fun. Worth watching if you didn't mind the previous EX movies.

I can't help but wonder what these movies would have been like if they were released 15-20 years ago when all these guys were in their prime.

That's the thing... these films were never going to appeal to new generations.

Why are they gonna watch a bunch of crusty old soldiers shooting people when they can watch superheroes who are literally walking tanks or cosmic bad asses? Superheroes are the new action stars.

Sly was better off keeping these films hard R throwbacks to the 80s glory days. Make em for 50 million a pop. Loads of blood squibs. Loads of swearing. Inventive and outrageous kills. The whole lot.

I agree with you about these films being hard R, made relatively cheaply, and having lots of squibs inventive kills. I would also throw in wittier one liners and quips and memorable, dastardly bad guys. Michael Ironside anyone?

I do think the young Expendables were an attempt to reach out to a younger audience, but I don't think any of them are a box office draws...at least yet. They might have done better with saving Liam Hemsworth for this one, though I don't think he's a box office draw either...at least yet. At least he's in a still ongoing popular franchise.

It depends. If he does that "Savage Hunt" thing that he initially planned for Rambo V, then it could be interesting because it WOULD be something very different. It's amusing to me that people complain that these movies just do the same thing over and over again. However, when they DO try and do something different/change up the formula, people then complain about THAT as well since it's NOT like the other films. You cannot have it both ways.

Variety:
Jackie Chan Approached for ‘Expendables 4,’ ‘Rush Hour 4′
According to the legendary action star, he's been approached for three potential sequels: “Expendables 4″, “Rush Hour 4″ and “Drunken Master 3.”
Maane Khatchatourian said:
Jackie Chan is in high demand.

According to the legendary action star, he’s been approached for three potential sequels: “Expendables 4″, “Rush Hour 4″ and “Drunken Master 3.”

“Sly (Stallone) wants me for ‘Expendables 4,'” he told Den of Geek earlier this week. “I said, ‘okay.’ Because they already asked me to be in two and three, but I refused. Well, I didn’t refuse, but I said, ‘Sly, can’t we just do you and me? Not just a bunch of people and me only coming out for five minutes.'”

It appears that Chan is holding out for a bigger role or an anti-“Expendables” pic with just two action stars. That’s probably best as “Expendables 3″ flopped in the box office on Friday when it made its franchise-worst debut. The pic is also set to be the series’ lowest-grossing opening.

“So if I’m in ‘Expendables 4,’ I want it to be me and him,” he said. “Then it might be interesting. Otherwise you just come out for five minutes.”

I liked it, but it definitely wasn't as fun as the last two were. Gibson and Banderas delivered some great performances though.

Saw the film last night. I'd say it was the weakest of the three, but Mel Gibson is the highlight of this movie. Also having Ford there was a definite improvement over Willis. I had to chuckle with the "Church is out of the picture" line.

The problem with this movie is there's way too much going on and the plot is basically a rehash of the second film. Bad guy X, shoots and expendable and Barney is out for revenge.

Again Gibson makes the film shine, and I thought he's far and away the best bad guy of the series. Which makes you really wish he had survived the film. Actually, I think it would be funny if they somehow brought him back (maybe he had another bullet proof vest under his shirt), or maybe and even worse twin brother? With the over the top antics of the series I don't think people would have a problem. I doubt it will happen, but he was just so much better than Van Damme and Eric Roberts.

Kudos also go out to Antonio Banderas and Kelsey Grammer who I thought brought a lot of good chemistry and humor to the film. I hope they are both brought back in any future films.

The big disappointment in this movie is with the young expendables. The whole plot point seemed superfluous. They gather this new young team because Barney doesn't want his old team to die, then they get captured, and he goes back with the old team after vowing he wouldn't take them over to die. I don't know who in the hell wrote that ****, but it was terrible, and that's why the critics ripped this one after giving Expendables 2 fairly decent ratings.

Plus the young Expendables plotline pretty much put a damper on the exciting opening of breaking Wesley Snipes out of prison.

Also having a large section of the film where Christmas is out of the plot, left the film a little dull. Some of the great moments from the other films were from the great chemistry between the two.

The big problem is this film will far and away be the worst performing, and is going to pull in less than 50M domestic.

Also absolutely stupid decision to make this PG-13. Come on folks this series is aimed at the X-box crowd, who won't give a game a good rating unless it has sufficient blood splatter.

My overall feeling on this movie is disappointment, because with Ford and Gibson joining the team, this should have been one for the ages, where it really landed with a dud. No doubt the enormous success of Guardians of the Galaxy which is rapidly approaching the top domestic film of the year, and surprise family hit of Ninja Turtles, hurt the E3's box office take.

And let's not sugar coat this, it's a 46% drop from E2 and 53% below the first Expendables! This film may kill the franchise, but I hope not. The producers need to be honest with themselves. The attempt to bring in a younger audience by bringing in a new band of Expendables completely failed. According to Box office mojo 66% of the viewing audience was over 25 (which again shows what utter crap it was to tone down the over the top blood splatter from the first two films). What's ironic is that in E2 bringing in Liam Hemsworth, who can act and is extremely popular might have grown a younger audience, but we all know what happened to his character.

The biggest fail for the young Expendables was Kellan Lutz, aka Smilee. A guy who in 5 seconds goes from "problem with authority" and "waste of time" to "hey I'll joint the team."

If there is a 4th film, hope they learned their lesson, and I hope they can get Ford, Snipes, Grammer and Banderas back.

Before I start getting dissed let me say that I grew up and love all the classic 80's action films, those were made with heart and some semblance of intelligence but I'm actually glad E3 came in 4th place this weekend, this was not made for the teeny bopper IPhone crowd but more for us old middle aged crowd who sadly don't spend as much as teens do.

I don't have any plans to see it since frankly I found the first two movies mediocre but one doesn't have to be living under a rock to see that the reviews for this are negative.

What next, Justin Bieber for Expendables 4? If only to see him die by an arrow through his neck then I'll pay to see that.

I hope somehow someway they can do one more film just so they can end on a strong note. Ending the franchise like this is just depressing :(

what I dont get is why did stallone try to wait in the "last" entry for the series to introduce a whole new team of no bodies and low level actors when they should have focused on the big names invovled for the big exit. No one cares about ortiz or any of the young bloods, god knows I didnt and the movie suffered at that part in the film and became boring for me until snipes and others came back on screen.
