The Gaming Lounge: Beyond - Part 3

To be honest, I never understood the recent hate all Japanese game trend over here. Are there a lot of crap Japanese games? Sure. However there are a lot of crap western games too. For every FFXIII 2 they make, Western developers make a Bionic Commando, or spend 1.5 decades to make a Duke Nukem.

There are great JRPG's out there if you're not just following the most famous ones like FF (which HAS majorly declined). Many seem to be on handhelds anymore, butDemon's Souls, Disgaea 3&4, and Valkyria Chronicles have been some of the best RPG experiences I've had this gen.

If anything...I agree with the diversity statement. Why it has to be an either or situation is beyond me. I LOVE that western RPG's are vastly improving. More Elder Scroll, Dragon Age (1, not 2, lol), and Mass Effect's are a good thing. Yet, to me, this gen still feels incomplete. I miss my Xenogears, Breath of Fire's, GOOD FF's, Chrono's, and Suikoden's. Even though there have been some awesome RPG's this gen, I think the PS1 era still holds the crown for me for best RPG generation.

With that said though....I do agree a lot Japanese developers do seem to be stuck in a rut, and sales do reflect that.

Don't bother. Your words will probably fall on deaf ears. I personally abide by Sturgeon's Law (90% of everything is crap), but some years ago the gaming intelligentsia decided that Japanese games are, almost without exception, "outdated" and "bad" and western games are the bright and shining future. Of course that's bull****, but everyone, including myself for a time, followed along with that line of thought.

There are many, many factors to consider when thinking about why Japanese games have fallen by the wayside in favor of western games this generation, but suffice it to say it's not because they're "bad".

Gotham City Impostors is on sale. Been waiting for that, downloading now.

Also doing Battlefield 3 properly from now, just bought the premium pack (4000 MSP!). 1st day today and despite being crap, lot of fun with 6 guys.

the reveiw that came out for it all say it was a bad idea. connection wise it was a frailer. oh that and the fact they didn't Explain you were supposed to use the hand held controller along with kenect too. which wasn't mentioned to the public.
Damn, I was hoping the combination of both would work well. Still waiting for a top game to integrate Kinect fully, not just voice commands.

Ya know i played the demo for that game and didn't have any problems with my movements registering yet ALL the reviews list that as a big problem. Still dont plan on getting it any time soon, but i thought that was odd.
Did you play with the Kinect and the controller together?

Both. It requires you to use both. Like i said tho, i didn't have any trouble with my movements registering. Maybe the full game is different?

There are a few JRPGs I do like, like Legend of Dragoon and of course, Pokemon, but I feel as though in addition to the problems I do have, I don't feel as though JRPGs have evolved at all this generation.

And I certainly do agree that PS1 was the best generation for JRPGs, despite me not being that huge a fan of it.

It's especially weird because the guys at Giant Bomb said that they and other game journalists had very few if any problems with the game at a preview event. I wonder what happened between and the retail release.

.

I think you're overreacting. First, I never said all Japanese games. Just that I'm not fond of JRPGs. I'm not saying the games are bad, but I just dislike the style of storytelling. Also, no one said that western game companies don't make crappy games, so I'm a bit baffled at why you brought that up? Both make bad games.

It is weird. I guess either some of the reviewers can't get used to using both at the same time or the developers maybe tweaked it and ruined the balance of the settings.

Cool, I have a lot of hope for that method. Can't see how they can possibly do a 'hardcore' game without some form of controller. Even if this is not the game to convince people at least we'll know it can be done for future better games.

Odd, i didn't know that. Yea maybe From Software mucked something up in-between the demo build and the final build.

Yea i think its a really cool concept and the demo, i felt, worked fairly well.

But i watched a video the other day of some reviewer trying to play it and it really was wigging out on him and i had to scratch my head cuz that wasn't my experience.

I could see a flight combat sim using Kinect. Use your flight stick for actually flying and firing missiles etc and use kinect gestures for things like ejecting and actually starting up the plane before take off(like you have to do on those hardcore PC flight sims)

it's like what happened in kingdom of amalar reckoning , the ME3 Demo and Deus Ex Revo. of which people didn't like those demo's for obvious reason but the games them selves were cool. And as I said with those the demo isn't always Representative of the actual games them selves . Only it turned out back wards for this. unforeseen bugs hit this game.

It's probably too late but it's a shame they can't recall the game and fix it before release. Those controls not working quite right will probably ruin the experience. I bet a lot of people will give up on it.

Pat what exactly did you have to do with the controller on Steel Battalion? Do you not need to move the arm that is holding the controller?

The controller moved the tank and fired the weapons, everything else was motion based. Yea u did have to use your hand that was holding the controller. I think I just put the controller in my lap when I needed both hands.

Ok so you don't have to press buttons/move analogue sticks on the controller at the same time as waving your arms around. That part was confusing me. I hope the next Elder Scrolls game uses Kinect movement for all exploration and maybe combat. I would have burnt a few hundred million calories if they'd had that for Skyrim.

I work out between 1 - 1.5 hrs a day lol but I'm sure a lot of that gets undone by gaming & hardly moving for another 4/5 hours a day. And when I was playing Skyrim I did a few all day/night sessions on Sundays. That's almost no movement for 14-16 hours mate :woot:

Lol I don't think you'd want to put up with 14 hours of Kinect. Heck even more than 10 minutes sounds like a real drag

Kinect just isn't for a large percentage of gamers, no 2 ways about it. Anything requiring precision or skill I would much rather do completely with a controller. But low urgency exploration type gameplay (Skyrim is ideal) I would love to use Kinect for and would happily do it for hours on end. I've always loved long period low intensity stuff outside of hardcore workouts like walking around all day on holiday while carrying bags. And most importantly it would justify spending 14 hours of 1 day on a video game which is pretty hard to do to a 'normal' person otherwise :woot:

Edit: The option to use a controller only should always remain though for those with no interest.

Xenoblade was without question the best JRPG to come out this generation.

My god, it was fantastic.

Depends on the game. Ping pong is wicked fun. So is Dance Central. Thats about it tho, thats about all the joy iv gotten out of my Kinect.

I just bought a PSP. I've wanted one for awhile and since I'll be going to France in 2 weeks, it will give me something to do on the flight since I may not have my phone or laptop.

Some of the Sports stuff can be fun when family & or friends are over such as Bowling. But that is about it

I really liked The Gunstringer, Kinect Fruit Ninja and the Wipeout games were fun with people. I like my kinect more for dashboard navigation than games
