The Good Citizens of Metropolis: The Casting Thread

So we go through all of the destruction of Krypton again and then he's sent to earth as a baby, discovers his powers, joins the Daily Planet, fights Zod, encounters Lex Luthor, rinse and repeat?

Audiences will think Superman has only one or two stories to tell and needs to keep repeating it over and over again.

The destruction of Krypton can be a flashback, like in the comics they sometimes show Superman's journey to Earth at the start of the story, in a page or two. They can establish who and where he is, such as Clark being a reporter in Metropolis while also showing stuff like Lex and his influence on the city. It doesn't have to take that long.

They could also go the Tom Holland/Peter Parker and Iron Man route and tie his story with Supergirl (If they make her movie first) just so they can explain how they are connected and how they both escaped the destruction of Krypton.

We don't need the origin but if they want to spend two minutes showing Krypton blowing up again like they keep showing Bruce's parents being killed all the time than I can live with it. There's the opening credit montage trick if elements of the origin need to be shown for story purposes. You can weave them in like Wolverine's various wars in X-Men origins if it is really necessary.

After seeing his Captain America, I think Chris Evans would have been an awesome Superman. This is not to put down Henry Cavill. I think he's awesome. I hope he comes back for a MOS sequel. I'd also love to see a 40's era Superman movie like the Fleischer cartoons mixed with Captain America: The First Avenger. I made this pic to show Chris Evans as a modern Superman

An opening credit montage might be too TV. I would prefer if they worked it into the plot more, like a prologue, or a voiceover narration, a flashback during the story, or tied into the plot somehow.

An opening scene would be fine but I don't want the opening twenty minutes to be rehashing the origin. We had flashbacks during MOS and I prefer not to stop the narrative to go back again. This all depends on how important an origin scene is to the particular story.

Yeah an opening like MOS on Krypton is not necessary. But a bit longer than an opening credits montage. Just don't want it to be too quick like a TV show. Infant Superman leaving Krypton as Jor-El and Lara watch, and landing on Earth and discovered by the Kents could establish a lot: it could establish new actors, new costume and set designs etc.. If this is a reboot/soft reboot. They could play it out and it would only take a few minutes.

I know I'm going to catch flack over this but I still like the idea of MBJ as Superman. I would love to see a black Superman.

MOS should’ve taken more influence from STAS and featured a Brainiac with ties to Krypton. So disappointed in the wasted potential.
At least I still have the first two Superman movies and STAS to watch.

If the next Superman doesn’t have Brainiac I give up on WB.

It's not just if the next Superman doesn't have Brainiac. It's also if the next Superman has Zod and Lex Luthor again, showing the rest of the world that Superman has a very small rogues gallery of 2 villains to draw from.

My ideal cast and creative team. Will never happen but would have been cool
xa12xsolk5131.jpg

My Superman pitch.

We have an established Superman, probably 5 or 6 years in. Clark and Lois are in a long term relationship and she knows who he is. Have Jimmy Olsen be new in Metropolis and act as the audience surrogate. The strong friendships between Jimmy, Clark and Lois is the focal point of the film, like Harry/Ron/Hermione. Jimmy also finds out who Clark is. Supermans parents are both still alive and are loving and supportive.

Superman and Lois are trying to have a baby, so Superman is trying to figure out how to merge Kryptonian and human DNA in the fortress. Meanwhile CADMUS, a secret genetics lab funded by Lex is working on the same thing. Lex wants to merge human and kryptonian DNA to give himself the powers of Superman. One of their first successful earth mammal/kryptonian hybrids is a dog with kryptonian powers, Krypto. Lex finds out he will never have the powers of Superman as they can't merge DNA of a living person, it would kill him. So lex orders a half superman, half lex clone to destroy superman, superboy.

The film would have superboy being brainwashed by Lex and forced to attack Clark. Clark frees Connor and becomes his surrogate father figure, and their relationship is another focal point. Lex is not the main villain, he's a background manipulator. The main villains can be other Cadmus experiments such as parasite, blockbuster, Metallo or bizarro, and the Cadmus head scientist Dabney Donovan.

In the end, Clark and Connor take down Cadmus and Clark uses Cadmus technology to get Lois pregnant. Clark and Lois get married.

Future sequels will deal with Mr Mxyzptlyk, the legion of superheroes, brainiac, the birth of Jon Kent, Darkseid and President Lex.

Director - Alfonso Gomez-Rejon ("Me, Earl and the dying girl","American Horror Story")

This films needs charm, wit and heart, which me earl and the dying girl has. Plus we could get some horror inspired Cadmus stuff.

Writer - Peter Tomasi

Hard to argue anyone understands Superman better than him.

Couldn't give a ****. I really like the guy. Tall, charming, killer voice. Give him six months in a gym, some blue contact lenses, and an accent coach, and I think he'd be great.

And you know what? Good and bad, it would get people talking about the character.

Skip the blue contact lenses. Supes has never had to have blue eyes. He certainly wasn't drawn that way in the beginning, and Chris Reeve was the first actor to play him that did. Plus, color contacts always look freaky (see: Routh).

Casting Superman is tricky, because he has to be a person that can play a physically perfect boyscout that you can admire, and at the same time can also play a completely unassuming shy reporter that you can buy nobody would even think twice of him.
Cavill was the perfect Superman. But the Clark Kent side, not too much.

Armie Hammer could be a good Superman, but he'd be a terrible Clark Kent much like Cavill was. Same with Tom Cullen. They just stand out too much by nature.

For that same reason I wouldn't be against casting shorter actors either because, since they're short, they can be extremely handsome and well built and even then it'd be easier to dress them a certain way in which they wouldn't stand out too much. No matter how much you dress Armie Hammer up, he is never going to come across as anything but an imposing hot guy. Also, as for when they're Superman, well, the guy is gonna be flying most of the time, so it doesn't really matter. For that reason I could see Zac Efron in the role.
That's also why I wouldn't be against casting actors with almost boyish faces like Nicholas Hoult.
Other choices could be Jonathan Groff.

This guy I haven't seen on anything but I like his look.

But, but...his teeth! :o

Funnily enough i said the same thing and got flamed for it, for me, something about teeth that i can't not see.. you can imagine my ocd kicking in when Reeve shouts at the end of STM and we see (kryptonian) silver fillings.

I was joking, lol. His teeth are beyond fine (and better than Cavill's). I just find it funny that that's a thing at all. Unless we're talking about someone with a massive gap-tooth or something, people won't care.

I'm sure the GA won't.... but i would.

Besides, he would make a better Bond.
