The Good Citizens of Metropolis: The Casting Thread

Hoult might bring a fresh faced innocence to the Superman character that is so desperately needed after the Cavill fiasco. He seems to have a genuine innocence and trust to his features and talent that the character has lacked over the last two movie inceptions Routh had those characteristics but was let down by a terrible script and process. Cavill seems to be a good person, yet his characterization was terribly flawed.

I am not set on any particular actor, would be pleased with Corenswet, Goree, Elordi, Hoult, Suter, Novogratz or an unknown.

My hope is we move away from what has been, and away from Cavill, even though he is not completely responsible for the mess the movie character is now in

Henry and
I've always liked the idea of Hoult as Lex. Could be a younger, definitive take on the character that mirrors Superman as they grow in opposite directions.
That's inspired...

Miles Teller is still my top choice... all being said and done..

Yeah, Hoult could work really well. Sadly I think both Cavill and Routh were hurt by poor scripts more than anything else. Though I still feel Routh wasn’t much of an actor back when SR was made. I think that he could play a much better Superman now than he could back then.

I’ve tried so hard to like Cavill as Superman, I just don’t think he’s a very good actor. He’s definitely not one of my favorite Superman actors, and this only became more glaringly obvious after Superman & Lois premiered.

If Welling would’ve played Superman instead of Clark, I think he’d rank a lot higher, but currently Reeve and Hoechlin are my 1 and 2

British actor Tom Brittney might make an interesting Clark/Superman

I had hoped they used him or Gerrard Christopher in flashpoint as that world's superman....

Lois and clark, the new adventures of superman... the to me, is the perfect blend... whilst it was on top, it was great.. I loved how clark seemed so real..

ditto, I wanted him to succeed, but he looks like he is acting, which is never good, he kills me on Witcher, so boring... sounds so fake... it's bizarre because in real life, minus the accent he is clark kent... I feel he has a good superman in him but it's almost like he's too focused not he accent and posture...

Hoult could absolutely deliver a stellar Luthor. I do like him for Superman more though.

Luthor’s such an interesting role because the character can go so many directions across so many different franchises & mediums. I’d like to have an actor that’s ready to play ball.

At the moment, I think Corey Stoll would be a great Lex. He’s such a good character actor. He’s already bald which helps lol. Just no more locks for Luthor.

Ant Man gave us a better 'Lex Luthor' than BvS.

Has anyone ever thought of the plot twist of Lex Luthor actually being Brainiac?

Picture Elon Musk type... he's reclusive, you only ever get to see him in controlled interviews, never makes public appearances, he owns almost everything so he controls the narrative - an alien shows up tomorrow, blows everyone out the water... it's disclosure, changes humanity, makes us all aware and asking more of life.. this alien, he can fly, he can expose all government and corporate lies and greed - will Lex be left alone? Would he adapt...
Then, imagine, this Kal El, later exposes that Lex Luthor is actually a deep fake, a virtual avatar, all the magazine covers, tv spots, spotted at sports events in the boxes, it's all fake. The poster boy to something more. The wizard of oz, it's brainiac - an alien that was captured in Roswell, but manipulated his way to creating the perfect home for himself here on earth... the internet.

That’s a reverse of the twist in the underrated TDKSA. That story was brimming with great ideas. The execution was up for debate.

I guess it's more down to if you want to portray Luthor as a crazy supremist or fascist humanist.

I think somebody like Hoult plays well with a Luthor that has the utmost belief in humanity but is driven against Superman because he wants to be the man of tomorrow/believes the Superman represents an unattainable, false hope filling picture in his city.

I think an older actor is better suited to a Lex that is straight up a crazy supremist that we often see and are used to.

Obviously there's bleed over between the two but imo it's easiest to distinguish the two that way. Both are ripe with potential but I believe they are two very different ways to take the character when building him up.

I honestly think lex has been used so much - hackman, spacey, smallville, arrowverse - cartoon movies etc that if we do use him, I want him as a background character, where we don't realize what he has done until a few movies down and it's all connected and we see flash backs to his involvement across the arc.

it's funny, the Facebook lex they wanted for BvS is good on paper, just what they had was just sooooooo, bad.

At this point, I am happy to just have mad scientist lex, or president lex with an army behind him.

I think having a Lex that grows to hate Superman as the series progresses rather than a xenophobe right off the bat would be a pretty interesting way of going about it.

I feel like you could rip the dialogue for Lex out of BvS and have a more traditional portrayal read them out and it would work like magic.

(... minus the horse piss lines)

Yeah, whoever plays Lex next has better be bald, damn it. If Eisenberg had at least been bald throughout BvS it wouldn’t have fixed his awful performance in any way but at least he wouldn’t have looked like a 16-year-old kid.

Between Eisenberg and McAvoy, I’ll always remember 2016 as the year actors shaved their heads for CBMs only to appear bald in the actual film for a fraction of their screen time.

I’m leaning more towards an adaptation of “What’s So Funny About Truth, Justice, and the American Way?” these days for the eventual reboot but an adaptation of the latest Superman DTV would be pretty great too. It’s a fresh look at the origin without delving into too much Kryptonian lore with new faces for moviegoing audiences like Lobo, Parasite, and Martian Manhunter.

I've felt for a while that Hoult was much more suited to play Superman than to play Batman , which he was considered for along with Pattinson.

I haven't seen Riz beyond Rogue One, but it'd be interesting to see him pull off Lex .

Damn good actor, I don't want him wasted on a bad guy... I actually think he would make a great Constantine.

One thing I’d like to see this take from The Batman is to avoid the origin and set up an already established Superman. Honestly, they could probably make him even further along than just Year Two, while they’re at it.

I’d say… Year Five with a mid/late-thirties actor in the role.

I think that "Year Two" setting is prime ground for an adaptation of What's So Funny About Truth, Justice & the American Way? as mentioned above. It might need to be tweaked a bit to keep it from being visually stale or lecture-y (i.e. Superman Returns) but I think there's a good middle ground that could be struck by going all in on world building like The Batman. Lois, Lex, Perry, Jimmy, Brainiac, Steel, Metallo, General Lane, etc. can all be shown/alluded to in order to carve out that world without taking too much focus away from Manchester Black/The Elite.

Man of Steel feels completely hallow in terms of world building when there were plenty of opportunities. I know world building doesn't go on to improve the story or dramatically change the quality of the film, but I think there's something to be said for what it adds when it's done, as proven by Reeves.

I think what Reeves did really well was embracing the world and treating it's large array of characters/caricatures as a normal thing, rather than doing what we've seen for the past 10-20 years and giving us tongue-in-cheek references.

It's a balancing act between the visual story telling and the characters involved, but it's entirely possible. Reeves could have avoided calling The Penguin by his name and stuck with "Oswald" and he could have skipped giving the Iceberg Lounge it's name, but it seems like he understood the importance/benefit of not shying away from those aspects. It makes it feel like the Iceberg Lounge has history, same with The Penguin. Name dropping crime bosses/showing them and making them distinct (i.e. not sanitizing those characters in similar fashion to The Dark Knight Trilogy).

So when taking that approach to Superman, I think normalizing these characters being caricatures in day to day life is important and goes hand-in-hand with the setting of the story. The Daily Planet should be unique and be full of unique people, LexCorp should be unique and Lex should be a unique character, etc etc. They don't need to be over the top, but also shouldn't be indistinguishable from what we say in our day to day lives (i.e. The Daily Planet in Man of Steel).
