The Grits Gonna Hit The Wrestling Thread! - Part 22

Of course he doesn't deserve a huge push right from the start, but just for his persistence and appearing to actually give a damn about his job he deserves a fair chance. If he makes the most of it and takes off and can do well for himself, great, if not, at least WWE gave someone who tries an honest chance.

What I love about Ryder goes beyond how much entertainment I get from his videos. The guy clearly loves the hell out of wrestling and his job. 95% of guys in his spot sit back and wait and do nothing, probably complaining about it, then complain when they get released. He's doing what all the legends like HBK and Austin say they should do: think outside the box, get yourself over, and make people take notice. His work should be rewarded.

I agree Zack should be given a fair shot, but some of his fans on youtube go overboard with the hype.

"Zack should be WWE Champion" and crap like that.

I doubt anyone with any sense at all means it seriously... I even say things like that in a joking manner. Realistically though, no one is saying he should be shot right to the top with a push the likes of which hasn't been seen since Lesnar debuted.

Lots of people that see his stuff, myself included, seem to love it. That's more than enough reason to give him a shot. If he continues to take off and wins over even more of the audience, keep pushing him. He might end up really being something special. Or, if the movement fails to gain any more momentum, the he's a mid-card jobber with a fan base that'll buy his shirts.

Sure, he might not be for everyone, but neither is Cena. I remember Rock being hated back in the day by some, and people even tiring of Austin's act. No one can appeal to everyone. What matters, and I say this not just about Ryder, but about wrestlers in general, is if the majority can get behind them, they'll drown out the haters. The better the ratio of fans to haters, the higher they move up the card... but it all starts with being given a chance.

That comic con thing was great. I love this storyline... I haven't felt this way since I was in high school, lol.

I agree TripleR. I would rather see Ryder pushed than guys like Zeke, Teddy J, and Mason Ryan.

Finally saw that video. This is the best storyline I can remember in years. Haven't been this excited to be a fan in years, if ever.

I want them to keep this up for a while, it's fun trying to guess when and where he'll strike next. I want to see this at baseball games, game shows, comic cons, movie premieres, talk shows, indy shows, anywhere he can walk on with the belt.

When it's all said and done I demand either a DVD or coffee table book about this, titled "The Wild and Wacky Adventures of CM Punk: The Story of a True Champion"

Notes from the Q&A at comic con

Rey's favorite time period of WWE television was the Attitude Era (late 90s)
Triple H was very popular with the crowd and had some humorous back-and-forth with some of the fans during the Q&A.
Triple H emphasized the importance of new blood to his role as Senior VP of Talent Development. He pointed out that the industry was a victim of its own success, and that without smaller territories, there aren't many places where young wrestlers can hone their craft. The burden is on the WWE to both identify AND train the talent.
When asked who he thought had the "it" factor in today's young stars, Triple H singled our Sheamus, Wade Barrett and John Morrison. A follow-up that name-dropped Zack Ryder got no reaction from the dais.
All three were asked who they enjoyed working with the most. *
** *- Bret said his brother Owen, Mr. Perfect and The Undertaker
** *- Triple H named Shawn Michaels
** *- Rey Mysterio responded with both Psychosis and Eddy Guerrero
Bret didn't return to the WWE specifically for an action figure, moreso for his recent DVD set.* He met a young boy recently who had never seen him wrestle, despite having all his action figures, so Bret felt the need to preserve his legacy for younger fans. He didn't want the sour end to his WWE career to paint the rest of it, which was successful and amicable with the company.
When asked what they'd like to see of the action figure line, Bret said he'd like to see a figure for Owen.* Rey praised the details on the figures and looked forward to seeing them continue to improve.* Triple H gave a very corporate answer about appreciating the work Mattel did...then added that his figure's nose could be a bit smaller.* Writer Brian Gerwitz said he'd like to see an Undertaker/Triple H Wrestlemania two-pack, along with (jokingly) a multiple-Doink The Clown set.* Triple H suggested a WWE Writers set, complete with a Mr. McMahon figure that calls them all idiots.
All three paid tribute to "Macho Man" Randy Savage.* Triple H and Rey didn't have the opportunity to work with him but had high praise for the man as a pioneer in the sport.* Bret told a story about one of their matches together, and noted Savage's professionalism and big heart.* Although many credit Hart and Shawn Michaels with paving the way for smaller superstars, he credits the Macho Man as a heavy influence.
Prior to the Q&A, WWE brand manager Enrique Ruvalcaba ran through plans for the year ahead in WWE & Mattel toys. Notable items previewed for the crowd:

A Vicki Guerrero figurine, because apparently the people demanded it (um, calm down, the people)
A Sin Cara figure in early stages, which seems to go against rumors that the former Mistico has already been fired after his Wellness Policy suspension.
New figures that got big reactions: Daniel Bryan, Alberto Del Rio, Papa Shango, old school Kane, Thuganomics-era Cena
As part of an ongoing collector's series with Matty Collector, they introduced Marty Jannetty and Andre The Giant dolls, then announced that fans would choose the next five figures in the line (from a list of 17 legends) at the Matty Collector website

Nobody is saying that Zack deserves to get a huge push. People are saying he deserves a chance to sink or swim on TV.

Absolutely. I think part of the overhype is just the fans having fun with something. Zack Ryder is going out on a limb and whether it's corporate sponsored or not it's entertainment. I don't think Ryder would ever reach main event status but it's happened with guys I didn't expect - Miz, R-Truth, Morrison..

When asked what they'd like to see of the action figure line, Bret said he'd like to see a figure for Owen.*

Sad this will never happen. I still have the Owen Hart figure Jakks made in the mid 90s. I saw something on wwe.com showing Punk getting Rko'd by Orton. It was a little statuette and looked really nice. If it was Austin stunning the Rock or something I would consider purchasing .

Agreed with all of this. Also a lot of us are saying tha the should be pushed but he could show up on Raw and lose to Hornswoggle and that could technically still be considered a push.

Velvet Sky and Mickie James renting a hotel room...together?

Would be the Best. Impact. Ever.

i truly think punk will lead the next era but 1 guy does not just lead an era alone he needs a foil rock had austin ,hbk had bret

personally i think it will be the miz since punk is the anti hero in the vain of austin so he needs that cocky arrogant heel as his opposing enemy

At least someone talented is in charge.

Hmm Miz could work, I'm just not sure how they can make that personal. I think a Shawn Michaels like character is needed, someone that once stood for all the things that Punk really hated.

Morrison

Doesn't Miz stand for that though?

Miz is the epitome of the mainstream, corporate created superstar. He got a break from MTV fame. He didn't hone his craft by traveling the world. He's a corporate made champion, doing all the media appearances and etc... and getting his breaks because of that.

I think a guy like Miz would be a perfect foil for Punk.

I swear to god if they revert Punk to the horrid ass "Straight Edge" where he goes after wrestlers because of their drug habits, I'm going to ****ing puke. I'd rather watch SuperCena.

A Punk/Miz feud would be awsome for the promos at least. And working with Punk would make Miz a better performer.

Morrison could work, at times he (the on screen character) reminds me of those rock stars that don't give a **** about music and are just there to be famous, party, and get laid. If they use him that way then it could contrast greatly with Punk who lives for wrestling and is STILL that guy that leaves the house in a baseball cap, a hoodie and sweats. The only problem is that Punk would eat him alive on the mic.

That role goes to Cena. Miz comes across more as a guy that is living his dream and doing so by playing to his strenghts such as being popular with the media

I dunno, that's a big part of his character to be sure, but if that's what the character really was, I think he'd be a face, not a heel.

I dunno, I think this would almost act as a spit in the face to everything Punk stands for:

I read that, big fan of Simmons and he's apparently going to have Punk on his podcast.

I can see why Triple H likes Sheamus and Wade Barrett. Shemaus in particular is similar in some ways to Triple H.

Wade is still rather green I think. He needs to devlop his character and ring skills a bit more.
