The Horror Thread - Part 3

My Point being when The Shape shows up for the most part in the sequels he's still The Shape which is the absolute core of the character. Regardless of script or bad plotting or what the weakness it is but that IS NOT the case for Zombies films at all, he carries himself like Leatherface and even the backstory, white trash lover Zombie gave him what was another Texas Chainsaw homage the same as his other copycat films.

To each their own on his music I think his best work is in White Zombie, Hellbilly was ok but since then I've found his stuff to be pretty mediocre and badly written.

No worries it's cool if you like his stuff I'm just not a fan of Zombies constant hard on for Texas chainsaw and white trash in everything he does, or his best Dario Argento imitation with LOS.

I'm really not much for RZ's movies at all, outside of The Devil's Rejects.

He's explained why, having literally run out of money to do anything, but Lords of Salem completely sputters out in the most annoying way possible.

I know it was discussed a bit in the last thread, but the first Candyman film is fantastic. Before watching it tonight, I hadn't seen it since I was a little kid.

Having Phillip Glass score the film was an interesting choice given that he also scored Koyaanisqatsi, which dealt heavily with decaying housing projects.

Watching this film again was also weird personally, now, after having the opportunity to hang out and speak with Tony Todd for over an hour a few summers back. He is remarkably chill.

No I mean the Rob Zombie who had a self described awful experience making the Lords of Salem and is currently in pre-production for a film about a 1970s hockey team.

If a third RZ halloween film was going to happen it would have by now.

By the way I know I've said this before but outside of the first film, I really do not at understand the appeal and love for any of the filma featuring Michael Myers. B*** all you want about Zombie but the pretty much all the Myers sequels are varying degrees of crap.

My point was yes lied before, there have also been big gaps between sequels many times. I hope he doesn't come back, he's an awful director anyway in my opinion,

That's your opinion but they've all been financially successful, even the ones that supposedly bombed made profits.

I just finished watching Wrestlemaniac, starring Rey Misterio Sr. It's a fairly serviceable slasher flick, delivering on the gore if not the suspense & scares. It certainly has room for improvement though.

1) It would have been much better had they been able to shoot in the abandoned hospital like they originally planned, rather than a ghost town. That wasn't the producers fault though. The city of Los Angeles screwed them over after they had already arranged to shoot in an abandoned hospital.

2) They needed more characters. And of the characters they did have, Jimbo & Daisy were both completely pointless. Jimbo was a typical stoner, only written in to fill the "smoke pot & die" quota for slasher films. And Daisy was so drunk, all she did was sleep, puke, then get her face ripped off by El Mascarado.

3) This might sound kinda pervy, but I think a movie where the plot is a homicidal maniac stalks & kills the cast and crew of a porno movie should have a lot more sex and nudity. Otherwise it might as well be just a story about three guys and their girlfriends on vacation in Mexico and their van breaks down just outside the ghost town where El Mascarado lives.

Other than that, the movie had the potential to be really good. Instead, it's only okay. I'd give it a 5.5/10.

I feel exactly the same way. Halloween was a much bigger deal when I was younger. Of course, I grew up in a small town where Halloween was more of a big deal. I now live in a large city, and Halloween seems more about adults dressing up and going clubbing in costume. No one seems to do anything for the kids anymore, at least not here in the city. Any trick 'r treating seems to happen at the shopping malls, where I guess it's safer.

I don't see why Christian groups would have a problem with Halloween. I suppose they could not like the holidays Pagan roots, but Christmas has its roots in Paganism as well. Besides, the modern holiday of Halloween stems from the Christian holidays of All Saints Day (November 1), and All Souls Day (November 2), which were merged into one holiday called All Hallows Day (November 1). October 31st was called All Hallows Eve (the evening before All Hallows Day), which was eventually shortened and bastardized to become Halloween.

The reason All Hallows Day isn't celebrated anymore is the purpose of the holiday was to pray for the souls of those stuck in Purgatory so that they may be allowed into Heaven. But since The Church had declared the nonexistence of Purgatory, there has been no more reason to celebrate All Hallows Day. But by then All Hallows Eve had been taken over by Corporate America to become the holiday we all know & love.
See here, in a smaller, but still decently sized town, we actually do have a lot of kids trick or treating. In fact, before the weather went to hell, I took both my kids out to a few neighborhoods. They actually have a couple major streets that do some stuff, plus local churches and even the police do something. But it still all feels rather small scale because corporate or not, it seems like nowhere goes all out like they used to. I remember Wal-Mart used to turn their whole garden center into a Halloween extravaganza, K-Mart used to get some cool stuff , and there were plenty of decorations all over. Now we're lucky to get an couple aisles and most of the stuff normal stores get is fairly cheap.
We do get a Halloween Express every year for the past ten or so years, but they're expensive as hell and the costume quality varies from awesome to really eh. But again, it still all seems such a small affair these days.

Maybe this is more suited for the Halloween thread, but it doesn't seem as active. To get a little back on topic, ended up going to bed on a marathon of Halloween, Halloween II, and Halloween III instead of Prince of Darkness. I've bought so many movies through October sales I've got a lot to watch, but it just felt right to end on those.

Honest question, but is that supposed to mean anything?

I wouldn't necessarily think it means anything, but I like to defend the Halloween series a little, not because it's my favourite but I feel that it was never as bad as the ups and downs that NOES and Friday the 13th had.

I'm not saying that it is perfect, it's far from it, but I really think that the tone of the entire franchise was consistent and The Shape was always there, nothing changed about the core of the character.

It never became something it wasn't. Does this make it superior or better? No, but to me that's quite a rarity and despite the flaws, there were some great moments in 'Halloween 4' right through to 'Halloween: H20'.

All of the Halloween talk has gotten me to thinking of seeing 4-6 again.

Any UK posters watch ITV2's awesome horror game show 'Release The Hounds'?

The mirror mirror in the woods and mad man's slaughter house games were great.

The mummies boy contestant almost pooped his pants :woot:

That looks pretty interesting. I might reorder Netflix if it's available on there.

We have a few shows that are kind of similar here in North America. They're more "Candid Camera/Punk'd" type of practical joke shows where people get the s**t scared out of them then it's revealed to be a big prank.

I watched Halloween 6 recently. It's not that bad. Especially compared to the Friday the 13th series. Except you have to deal with Paul Rudd's unintentionally funny acting and the abrupt ending.

I'm interested in seeing part 4 and 5 again. I can hardly remember them.

Making people run from attack dogs and jump over a fence to win prize money it turns out is a lot more entertaining than just quizzing them.

I finished my October/Halloween viewing last night with Toy Story of Terror (not as Halloweeny as I expected) and The Monster Squad (probably my #2 favorite movie of all time). I was planning on staying up and watching something else, but the wife and I just both turned in fairly early instead.

The Monster Squad is a true 80's classic, I think it's very underrated.

I finished my Halloween Day yesterday by Watching Trick R Treat. This has become a Halloween Tradition for the past 3 years now. Can't wait for the Sequel.

I totally understand why people prefer the Halloween franchise to Friday The 13th. Michael Myers is The Shape all the way through from Part 1 to Resurrection. Meanwhile Jason starts off as a drowning victim, becomes a homicidal hillbilly, then a zombie, then a body hopping demonic slug, then a killer cyborg in space.

However, I find the general quality of the Friday The 13th movies remains more consistent, with parts 1 through 3 being genuinely good, and parts 4 through 7 less good but still watchable. With Halloween, the only ones that are genuinely good are 1, 2, and H20, and parts 4 & 5 are less good but watchable. Everything else in both series are varying levels of crap.

Scare Tactics used to have some decent prank scares.

it's a very quotable monster movie.

There really are so many great quotes. Obviously "Wolfman's got nards" is most popular, and rightfully so, but a few others I really love...

Scary German Guy's *****in!

Don't be chicken s**t!

Can it, Frank!

Give me the amulet, YOU *****!

Pretty much the whole movie.

sideFX, so far the most boring and uninteresting horror movie I've seen in a long, long time. 30 minutes in, two killings, zero interest. The highlight is the obligatory topless scene in the first few minutes.

It's ultra low budget and shows. The movie looks like it's shot on low quality film and the actors saying their lines with only a half-hearted attempt. Given how *****ey almost all of the characters are I'm not terribly surprised no one felt motivated to act more believable.

The sound is equally off with "enhanced" hearing from the effects of the drug sounding random and even accidental.

The two deaths so far are offscreen or obscured shakycam. The makeup is poor and laughable "zombie" paint. Blood splashes are obviously colored liquid that might be watery corn syrup but it certainly didn't look or act like blood spatter.

The story... that's bland, poorly written and only barely coherent. The characters are as I said, a bunch of moronic, offensive, unreal people. A character thinks she's nearly raped by the one guy who has a clue about the drug and tries to warn her. In escaping from him and getting to the house, her boyfriend and everyone else nonchalantly goes back to playing video games and denying the new drug could possibly be responsible for the murders and side effects she was suffering (vomiting copious amounts of blood) after having taken some of it slipped into her drink by the *****ey boyfriend the previous night.

I'm just watching it now out of boredom, only half paying attention to it and thinking of how I can create my own version of MST3K because this certainly demands a treatment.

I gave up. It was so blaringly stupid I couldn't even be bothered to keep it going in the background. Skipping to the end, they do some kind of massacre but it looks as fake as everything else. There are no wounds, just a lot of blood splattered all around.

What year did the name "Michael Myers" arrive into pop culture?

I finished watching the first two Halloween movies and both said The Shape at the end in the credits. I know I didn't hear Michael in Halloween 1, I don't recall in H2.

Was it H4?

He's actually referred to as Michael a few times in Halloween II, by Loomis, Janet and Jimmy.

don't they refer to the Myers home in part I or II, as well?
