The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013) - Part 1

Is there a deeper meaning to the sugar cube that Finnick offers Katniss in front of the horses before the opening ceremony?

it kinda signified something that she probably never had, a sweet snack, as well as like he said, about how they were for the horses who wouldn't appreciate them, when it should be them who take them and savor it because they weren't going to be around to enjoy life much longer due to the games.

i'm clearly paraphrasing and i'm doing it terribly.

Just watched. Loved. Want to see again.

I wish they had shown them looking at footage of old Hunger Games. Especially Haymitch's. It would've been cool to have seen his.

Finally got around to seeing it. Easily better than the first. Man JLaw is a terrific actress! This is the first serious 10/10 movie I've seen this year. Just fantastic.

I also loved Phillip Seymour Hoffman as Plutarch. The scenes with him and Donald Sutherland are terrific.

My only thought is that Hemsworth should have been Peeta, not Gale. There is so much more chemistry between Jennifer and Liam than there is with Hutcherson.

Just saw this today, an improvement over the very good 1st movie in almost every way, the stakes were raised big time, and some major things happened in this movie.

Loved Katniss' dedication to the memory of Rue at the start, was nearly in tears with that. Overall J-Law was remarkably good in this, what a great actress, and amazing to look at as well.

Everyone else was superb though as well, with some great new characters like Finnick and Joanna and Hutcherson as Peeta was really good as well.

9/10. I always liked Francis Lawrence as a director, and felt that some day he would make a very good movie, well now he has.

I don't get why people keep saying that it's so much better than the first one... I thought the first one was independently excellent, and without the first one, the second one doesn't work.

That scene at the start in District 11? That scene would be totally useless if they hadn't pulled off Thresh and Rue in the first movie.

The world-building was also very good in the first one, for example Caeser Flickerman's show and personality, also the dress code and makeup code of people in the capital, which is extremely important and shows off their decadence.

This is the theme song for Caeser Flickerman:
[YT]VOZU3UsdbAw[/YT]
It's a lot of fun, and a very good vision for a game show in a decadent society.

***********

I just realised something new ... "welcome, welcome, welcome" repetitively spoken is something said by both Flickerman and Trinkett.

i rewatched the first movie. and i like it better than last year.

I tend to agree with this. Jennifer and Josh, while adorable together in a brother-sister type of way off-camera, seem completely mismatched to me on-camera. I like both of their performances a lot, I just don't see any chemistry happening there.

I see tons more chemistry than Lawrence/Hemsworth.

I almost feel like that was intended because I almost felt that was the way the books and the relationship in the books was. Peeta basically forces Katniss to pretend to be in a relationship by revealing his crush on her before the first Hunger Games. She should be with Gale, he's much more her "type", but has to be with Peeta due to what happened in the Games.

I guess you might have a point there, but isn't she supposed to be developing genuine feelings for him, though? Like by the time they're in the arena in Catching Fire, I thought all those displays of affection were supposed to be real, no? That's the stuff I'm having a harder time buying.

The 1st movie grows on me more and more every time I watch it, it is one of those flicks were you notice something new every time.

Hope this happens with the sequel as well.

Been a guest, but first time posting. Just wanted to say if you read the books you know why Katniss chose Peeta over Gale. Gale is her bestfriend. And in the situation she was in she didn't think about being in love. In the movie you can see how much Peeta loves Katniss. Even willing to die in the first games to let her live. Even help give her bread when she was very hungry and in the rain before the first games. He really loved her. So in Catching Fire, you see him mad that the wedding is a fake even though he wanted a real one with her. Willing to help fight off her nightmares and you hear him respond to her asking to stay with her, and says "always." Gives a pearl in the games. Even get a locket with pictures inside. And when they were talking how they going to get out, he was willing to die just like the last games, so she can be with her family, while he doesn't think nobody cares about him. And she finally realizes that she loves him by kissing, and also when she is about to be put to sleep at the end of the movie she says "I loved him."

And forgot to include her reaction when Peeta was dying from the forcefield, and Finnick sees real love in her, instead of the fake love relationship that most districts saw.

In her situation she doesn't realize her affection for Peeta until he was dying or is captured. I mean she was going through many things in the games and prior to that. Its like in real life where this guy or girl likes you but you don't respond until its like too late and you are looking back at what if.

:lmao:

its the same in the movie IMO. good casting with Josh and Jennifer

In the movie, when Katniss enters the skills competition, she finds a painting of Rue on the floor. I had no idea what that was about, I figured that it was another tribute laying that down there to intimidate Katniss who would come later.

I read the book, and my hypothesis turns out to be not right.
Peeta put down the painting of Rue on the floor, to try and make the game makers know that there are consequences. In the book, Katniss doesn't see the drawing, she only finds out about it.

One change I like, from the book to the movie, is that
in the movie, Katniss is the one who realises that she should marry Peeta, rather than Haymitch informing her that this is the best way. This has the effect of increasing her agency.

Finally catched this (pun intented)!

Even better than the first movie (and I really liked that one too); better than the book; and my favorite 2013 blockbuster.

9/10

YEAH! Suck it blockbusters starring men, women are CATCHING FIRE in this FROZEN land. :ww::up:

Congrats to Catching Fire for being the biggest domestic release of 2013! I liked Iron Man 3 so I had nothing against it being number one. And Iron Man 3 still wins overall but it's amazing how well Catching Fire did domestically. Gravity, Catching Fire and Frozen not to mention the success of The Heat is proof positive that women can lead more than romantic comedies or romantic films in general. I love movies starring dudes but I'd like a few more blockbusters led by women. It's why I'm sorta rooting for Divergent even though I think it looks lame as all get out.

Makes me much more optimistic of Wonder Woman getting a film. :D

I'm almost afraid of a Wonder Woman film now since I feel they'll rush it out, terribly mangle it in the process and it'll flop.

If they do make it I hope it's not for a few years so there is time for it to be properly developed and marketed. We still have not had a proper superhero film with a woman headlining it. Things like Catwoman and Elektra leave a nasty impression.
