The Hunger Games - Part 2

^ so it's racist now just to simply ask why the race of a character was arbitrarily changed?

Although I agree that the people this "ruined the movie" are idiots.

the race of the Rue character wasn't changed (with the exception of maybe the costumer Cinna).

The book kind of made it very apparent that Rue, Thresh, and most of Distric 11 were black.

It's somewhat racist when the readers look past the descriptions of a dark-skinned girl in a book and visualize her as a white girl instead.

As a black 24 year old nerd who loves all sci fi/ comic book stuff its pretty sad and rage inducing when I see fans be so damm ignorant and racist. Last year it was people flipping out because Hemidall in Thor was black and being played by the fantastic Iris Ilba. Then people got mad because Miles Morales was the new ultimate spider man ( I didn't see anyone getting mad at Spider Man 2099), and now this. Sadly, racism will never go away and we will all have to deal with ignorant people, even among comic book/ sci fi fans. :(

didnt they say she had blonde hair in the book?

nope, brown hair. The author also made it a point in Catching Fire to describe most of the inhabitants of District 11 as having characteristics of black/hispanic people and that they looked similar to Rue.

That kinda sounded racist now ....

I've never read the books, but I do recall someone saying that District 11 is in the old American South and that a good chunk of the population there were black/dark-skinned. And I think the connection Katniss made between Rue and Prim was because of their age, no? That and the tragedy of seeing such a young girl (or kid for that matter) die in such a way...I didn't catch any racial undertones at all, and that scene was tear-inducing and beautiful in my mind. I just don't understand some people

Just idiotic when in the book it clearly says she has brown skin

I thought that it was perfectly clear that Rue was black in the Novel??? Some people need to learn better reading comprehension.

Remember when people were wondering why Green Lantern wasn't going to be played by a black guy (John Stewart vs. Hal Jordan)? For some reason that wasn't as big a deal as Ultimate Spider-Man being black. Now, that's racist.

Us sci-fi/comic book fans of darker skin should start a rebellion a la District 11 in the movie. And then get hosed down by white guys.

i still can not stop thinking how good Lawrence was in the movie. there was so much subtle acting .

Not really, considering John Stewart is the most well know GL thanks to the cartoons. Hal Jordan was a nobody to people who don't read comics and didn't watch Superfriends 30 years ago.

And middle-aged people have made Avatar, TDK, Transformers, and Pirates the blockbusters that they are.

And middle-aged people are the key to Avengers and TDKR's eventual breaking of the box office.

Um, what's this got to do with Hunger Games? My initial post said that Hunger Games was being propelled mostly by teenagers and someone else was attempting to state it wasn't.

Racially wise, what I found interesting was the fact that they rioted. Lots of kids were killed but only the black district was shown to riot after a death.

Her acting was very good from her volunteering for prim up until saving peeta at the end she had my undivided attention. You know your a good actor when you can cry and make me feel your pain and stare in another scene and completely intrigue me. I really sense big things from her in the future and with this franchise and xmen she's financially set for life.

For some reason I was wondering why you brought up middle aged people, but then again I dont think its just a teenager phenomenon (though they are a big part of it).

As for the racist aspect, they avoided making it look too racist by adding in white inhabitants in District 11 who joined in on the rebellion. PLUS, it was Katniss's salute to District 11 that set them off, not just the death. It showed solidarity amongst the lower-class Districts and that they were all in this together. The hosing was a bit much though, but I get why they put it there.

This. That was my single most favorite part in the entire film. It was executed perfectly, and was intensely powerful. I had tears in my eyes BOTH times I saw the film during that sequence. As for the hosing, it's actually a great callback to the Jim Crow era, and shows how devolved this society has become in terms of its treatment of the "Lower Districts" (per se). I thought it was a great moment and really showed how depraved the Capitol government really is, and it may, just MAY, get kids who see the movie to learn more about history and how racial attitudes have evolved over time.

Warning slight Hyperbole alert!

I find it scary that no matter the description that these people see every character as white. Clearly the character wasn't white and even if she was (she wasn't) the actress was wonderful so who cares?

Terminus Exordium  well said

I still can't buy Josh Hutcherson as Jennifer Lawrence's love interest............ i just can't....

Maybe it's his personality. For example, there has been strange love pairs, like Shia Lebeuf and Megan Fox, UNREALISTIC right, but in the movie it works, because how Shia's portrayed as Sam, but with Hutcherson's Peeta, there is this personality where he isn't man enough for her.

Maybe it's Jennifer Lawrence, she is too womanly to portray Katniss.....?? NOT DOGGING JENNIFER, she did incredible and definitely the best part of the movie.

But this is the only thing that bothered me, that in the movie (definitely works in the books), in a visual interpretation, Jennifer and Josh doesn't look right.

So, I don't know what it is. I can't overlook. In real life, Jennifer is 21, and Josh is 19, and they are both the same height according the IMDB. So, in pics, it looks weird since Jennifer towers Josh lol

I'm not dogging on the film but
out of curiosity, I looked more into the first book, and read that Katniss was pretending to be interested in Peeta........ which i was happy, but than i got more curious-er and than i read that Peeta and Katniss get's married .......... and i was like

So, if this is true, i will be weirded out throughout the next two flicks.

From how I've heard it explained, the "love" angle is very well handled by Collins and Katniss comes to truly care for Peeta..actually pretty interesting character development on Collins' part, and believable to an extent. But time will tell to see how that's handled in the films....

She was pretending but at the same time was confused about her feelings toward Peeta.

How dare you bring logic and reason into an argument about race? ;)

For shame :oldrazz:

Shes just describing someone's features, it's not like she said gale and katniss were the typical white crackers who hunt deer and district 11 were known for fried chicken. Just ridiculous.

I was listening to this podcast yesterday and the people were saying that Lenny Kravitz's character seemed to subtly be into Katniss so they should have made him gay to avoid that.
