The Hunger Games - Part 2

I thought it was ok.

I never read the books, so things did not make much sense to me, like how they could make things out of nothing (fire, fireballs, falling trees, Dogs).

I am assuming they were in some sort of "stadium"

To me (and I am sure a lot of people) I thought this would take place in the outdoors, no outside interference. This sort of ruined the movie for me.

Its cool, yeah they were in a simulated outside arena. In the book residents of the capitol would actually vacation in old arenas and revisit areas where tributes were killed and even do reeactments. They interfered alot to prevent viewers from getting bored that watched from the capitol and outlying districts. I remember the book saying this way tributes couldnt hide for days and leave people with nothing to watch. Hence stuff like with crane created the fire to push them together and fight.

I also did not like the "shaky" cam.. oooo its shaking.. it means more action.. well really just means headache for me.

This is my one complaint overall. I mean it was worse at some points then cloverfield. Like you were running with a box on your head with 2 holes cut out and you barely the action while you were running by.

And lastly all I could really think about is how it has already been done and IMO done better (Battle Royal).

Heres my thing and its in no way a bash at you but Im sure youve heard people say this movie rips from battle royale and even running man to an extent but about 75-80% of hunger games fans and even me never heard of a chinese movie til this came out and hit big. I wonder if this movie had bombed would people still say that stuff? I mean star wars blatantly borrowed from the hero mythologies that have been in countless movies and even flash gordon but noone seemed to care there and just said ok.

Well, Battle Royale is a deeply respected cult favourite... (not that I like it...) and in this age where everyone can just go on the internet and say whatever they want, you are gonna get these kinds of comparisons from people who maybe don't even know what they are talking about (like me now)

The idea of violent "games" used to appease the ailing masses has been used since Ancient Rome. So... yea.

i guess not. but 157 millions in 3 weeks is still very good IMO. for international.
It's actually kind of shockingly low for a movie that is going to make over 350mil domestically. The good news is, it's having good legs overseas but it really should be doing better.

I think that the movie is good but I really wouldn't cry if Ross didn't come back if they found another good director. I'm still not a fan of the shaky cam stuff.

haha, I mean it drives me nutz, Its a medium where there are varried interpretations of a story. Its the same with Dark knight, leading up to the release in late 07 and early 08 it was "oh how dare they recast the joker", "The story is gonna suck and be a rehash of burtons". Yet the dark knight was awesome and heath was instantly memorable. I can admit I have never seen battle royale or the running man but I loved The Hunger Games from start to finish and I will probably never watch those other movies.

I guess folk might want to read this, if it hasn't been posted yet, spec that Gary Ross might not have been definitely booted off the sequel ...

Im kinda interested to see another director tackle the sequel and get a diffferent perspective on each movie. This is the problem Harry Potter ran into at the end, they let one director continue the last 3-4 movies and I didnt really dig that directing style.

My sister didn't like Battle Royale and we usually have the same taste so I'm not going to be watching that film anytime soon. I usually hate cult favorites anyway.

Battle Royale is pretty good, definitely worth checking out. I don't recall his name, but the director was an old and very respected filmaker.
fwiw, Tarantino placed it in his list of fav 20 movies since the release of Reservoir dogs in '91.

As that article points out though, how many good directors are gonna want to make the sequel to a huge blockbuster on a rushed schedule? If they end up having to compromise a lot, their rep as a good director will suffer.
I have't seen THG yet, but I saw Pleasantville years ago, which was a well made movie, so at least they have a director here who knows the actors, has already been working on the sequel's screenplay, and knows how to make a technically good movie.

I would be fine with him staying on and I would be fine with him leaving if another strong director comes on board. Directors leave franchises all the time, it's not that big of a deal nor is it a shocking turn of events.

The article compares this to the X-Men 3 situation, where after Singer left/was outed(whatever happened there, similar as what is happening here, although up for spec), Matthew Vaughnn ended up leaving as he felt he couldn't deliver a product that would be up to scratch. Because the studio had set a firm date for release, with not much time for preparation.
So, if they don't get a good director in because of that, and the next movie stinks, it will be a big deal to the fans of the franchise.

^X3 isn't the boogeyman movie to me that it is to other people. Mainly because I think that the first great X-Men movie came out in 2011.

Saw it with my siblings for the third time yesterday  This movie is very re-watchable and my whole family loves it.

i've not seen Battle Royale but i am familiar with its premise and some of the plot. running man i have seen, and there are similarities. for x-fans, i kinda also liken it to the Mojoverse as in the gamemakers have to keep things interesting for the capital to keep them watching. days where nothing happen aren't big on ratings, so they brought katniss closer to the action with the fire when she was close to the edge of the arena, and when the muttations were created, even katniss recognized they were gearing up for the finale.

Well, it should be relevant to you, even as only a fan of First Class, as of course Matt Vaughn kb'd doing X3, as he knew he would not able to make a quality product with that set release date, and rushed schedule. But when it came to FC, he negotiated conditions with Fox where he felt he *would* be able to deliver a quality film, even with a somewhat rushed schedule.
So it looks more like an X3 situation here, than a FC.

Saw it a few days ago. Pretty good overall. The shakey & early handheld cam stuff was very annoying.

Still don't get what's so annoying with the handheld stuff in the beginning, do people have overly sensitive eyes?

I thought it gave the film a more unique feel but I can see how some people would have a problem with it. I liked the film for the most part I just wish there would have been 10-15 minutes more to build on the relationships between Katniss/Rue and Katniss/Peeta. I'm curious if there were many deleted scene's or not.

you just asked which director would drirect a sequel that will 100% make a profit. come on........come on. this is hollywood where over 50% directors do it for the money. come on again. :woot:
and this movie was not rushed? again come on.

Ok, but it doesn't mean that, as I SEE SPIDEY was suggesting, that getting a 'good' director, would mean a good movie, of the same quality as the first one anyway.
At least the guy who did the first one, knows the actors already, and has done some pre-lim work on the sequel in as much as working on the screenplay, so has some of the work done already.

back to casting suggestions. lots of great choices for Coin, but some of them may be too big of a price tag to try and get, who knows?

another choice i've thought of possibly would be Joan Allen
