To be fair, if the Mandarin had been portrayed like he was in the comics, it would have been pretty offensive. A villain who's character is based around his race and culture? The iconography used for Kingsley was already sticky territory. Luckily, that was mostly avoided.

To play devil's advocate for a bit, I think the 'fiction' within the movie itself seemed like a believable idea and could have possibly worked on its own without being offensive like the early incarnations of the Mandarin character.

But I have to admit, I really do love Kingsley's performance and how it turned out.

I haven't heard anyone mention that they showed SPOILER

In the beginning flashback they show Yensin from the first movie meeting Stark when he says he was drunk and did a speech on something. Thought that was awesome.

Wow, that sounds interesting. Did they get that actor back for that?!

I just came back from the film. Absolutely brilliant. Loved it. Wasn't bothered by the twist but I can see why it would divide opinion. The MCU could have used a villain as menacing as Mandarin was prior the twist. however the twist got a lot of laughs in the theater and it seems people weren't bothered by it.
The one thing that is bugging me though is at the end. If taking out the arc reactor was just a matter of surgery why didn't he removed in Iron man 2 when it was killing him? Was he going to wait and die? Was that explained anywhere?

Basically I think that is just Tony being stubborn, wanting to do things his own way on his terms. So instead of surgery to remove it he was using his brain and tech and all that to just put it off for as long as he could. Pure stubbornness which shows that in this movie it all
Comes full circle. Especially after avengers and the events of IM3 he has changed as a person, his story arc and all that.

I dunno... A character, called The Mandarin, who is basically just a mesh of eastern iconography, just being portrayed as one shade evil is a little dodgy... Add to the fact that
had he turned out to be the real villain, having him fought by a guy with stars and stripes painted on him could be very problematic for a lot of people in the audience, especially non-comic fans. Hell, as a comic fan, even I would have found that tough. As my GF kept asking me during the film "WHY do they call him the Mandarin? If he was asian in the comics but he's not NOW, why call him that? Isn't that just weird and offensive?"

But then the fact that it's actually Killian who has constructed an image that he KNOWS Americans will be able to hate and fear, is actually quite smart. It's a way of turning something that could have been politically incorrect into something that's making a smart critique on the fear of terror culture within America

I'm confused, why are Chinese bloggers mad about the movie?

It sounds like there are barely any differences in the international version at all.

They're mad not only because it's a different cut, but also because there aren't enough scenes of the Chinese actors and sets. So it's a lose-lose situation.

Well it sounds like all this China stuff they filmed didn't even make the international cut.

So I ask, what is even different about the international cut, and what was even the point of all this?

I wish I could read anything in the board.. only like 5 more days til I can see this stupid movie!! :argh:

Seeing alotta negative feedback on twitter. The thing is, it all sounds good to me, but at the end of the day I'm a big Shane Black fan so maybe he didn't deliver a typical superhero movie so can't fault people for expecting something else.

I'm wondering if this will have a big drop in it's 2nd weekend....I just want to see it already.

Can anyone that's seen it tell me
what happens when Tony finds Trevor and the truth is revealed. What happens to Trevor?

Saw RDJ on Leno tonight. From the SOUND of it, he still wants to do Iron Man.

Hollywood's "let's release it overseas first so we get some good buzz" plan seems to have backfired.

Major spoilers.

At first he's like "you're just a decoy, where's the real mandarin" whilst holding a gun to him (he broke into the mansion) after Trevor comes out of the bathroom and makes a funny comment about not going in there for a few minutes with his english accent. Then he gets Trevor to explain the whole thing, who talks about being a bum on drugs and AIM approached him to take on the role with a promise of more drugs and surgery and woman. He explains that Killian is behind it all and that it's all green screen and "movie magic babe", nobody really got hurt. He falls asleep half way through telling the story which always gets a big laugh from the audience. He truly is a washed up drunk.

He gives Tony a few clues to find the President however.

Later Tony and Rhodes come back to see him later in the film. He's watching the soccer on TV with a few beers. Rhodey is like "Is THIS the mandarin"? And they both see how pathetic he is. Before taking his boat.

Then later in the film right at the end when they wrap up what happens
they show the cops with Trevor who is in hand cuffs, stumbling in amongst the crowd of media that are snapping pictures of him and he's loving it saying "bloody hell" before stumbling further to the police station

And that's pretty much it.

No worries, I really can't do justice to the awesome performance if you can get past the twist and just enjoy it for what it is.

Especially when for the first part of the film they
build him up to be the ultimate terrorist, the biggest bad guy Tony has ever faced. And then you find that he's just...this. It's genuinely funny with his accent change, his prancing around and his couldn't care for anything but the next beer attitude.

Aah plotholes, they're funny like that.
