Iron Man 3 The IRON MAN 3 News & Speculation Thread - - - - - Part 14

People read this thread because it's the "main" IM3 thread. The word "Speculation" is still in the title, and a lot of us come here to still speculate on how things will tie in to Avengers and the rest of Phase II and the other movies.

Be patient. By next weekend, the bulk of us here in America will have had a shot at it, and the spoiler tags will be off (more or less).

Fair call, but I still stand by my comments since we're now in that dangerous period of time where some have and haven't seen the film.

Where are they, though? I've been a Marvel fan and collector since 1974, and I have yet to see a Mandarin cosplay at any of the cons; I have yet to hear any of my comic-shop buddies (from any decade) talk about Mandarin at all; I have yet to see Mandarin make any sort of impact on the Marvel Comics universe at all. Cartoons and toymakers have always been baffled about how to present him, and they usually create their own incarnations of him --- usually some rendition that's not likely to offend Asian customers. He's portrayed as everything from a sorcerer, to an ancient ghost, to a green-skinned alien, to a businessman, to a teenage descendant of Genghis Khan in magic armor. IM3 isn't doing anything new by making a version of Mandarin that is nothing like the comic books. In fact, the subject is explored in a miniseries a few years ago in which Mandarin forces a filmmaker to create a biopic about him, and the story is all smoke and mirrors and total bull****. I'll just say there's a very good chance that Shane Black happened to read that miniseries.

Like I said. I'm not convinced. You opinion is otherwise and that's fine.

So did they elaborate on
The Ten Rings organization at all? Was it just another part of the set-up? We're to assume Killian had all this in the works going all the way back to the first movie?

I don't recall any actual mentions of the Ten Rings. Though arguably the Ten Rings were an arm of AIM that were fooled into thinking they worked for the Mandarin so AIM were never directly linked to the Ten Rings terrorist organisation (though Killian does refer to using Extremis for both 'supply and demand' for planning to sell it to the US government).

The ten rings was [blackout] essentially nothing more than a logo [/blackout].

Yes and no.
The film doesn't explain away the Ten Rings organisation and those members seen in Iron Man 1 and 2. I have trouble buying most of those guys knowing about the Ten Rings connection to AIM. I think it's fair to say those guys were kept in the dark whilst Killian directed their terrorism behind the scenes. Those guys wouldn't have been part of AIM proper, so it's also fair to say that there was a very real Ten Rings organisation, but they weren't what they believe themselves to be.

thanks to the Mods and those who have kept info in spoiler tags ( which is most people) I'm avoiding a lot of posts and basically scanning over the thread lately to avoid anything big that I don't already know. I'm sure me and many others will be bringing up already discussed topics but bear with us darn Americans lol.

If anybody has any questions about what happens in the film or anything feel free to ask me here or PM me. Just saw it. Lots of great stuff in this one! Wow!

I saw the movie today, and it was great. I didn't like Iron Man 1 as much as the majority of others did so this by far is my favorite Iron Man film. I'd give it a 9 / 10 because there were a few things I was disappointed by, but I'll put them in spoilers.

Positive:

1. I like how the film transitioned from the Avengers, with Tony struggling to deal with everything that happened during The Avengers. It felt like a logical way to go, although I would've liked for them to at least hint at the Demon In A Bottle storyline as this would've been a perfect time and situation to introduce it.

2. Pepper's role in the movie was great. It was nice to finally to see her involved.

3. The action was great, and we finally seen a decent finale between the hero and villain. The death was okay in my book, as that character died in the Extremis storyline. I didn't like the fact that they killed the Iron Monger and Whiplash which could've been used a number of times.

4. The epilogue, I guess it can called that, was great but has me nervous. It was a great ending speech and all, but it seemed like it was RDJ's way of saying goodbye to the role. If it is his goodbye, then it was a great one, and a perfect way to end the trilogy. I know he has to stop at some point, but we will all miss him. Also, if it's his last film, there shouldn't be another Iron Man film until phase 4. Give the audience some new characters so we won't get burnt out on Iron Man.

Negative.
1. Rhodey and Maya Hansen were underdeveloped, and didn't need to be in the film.

2. My main complaints are over the way the Extremis storyline was adapted:

Maya Hansen's involvement was much more important in the comic, and it's a shame on how she was handled in the film.

Maybe it's because I forgot, but i was disappointed that Tony didn't receive the Extremis virus. It would've been a perfect way to reference back to the first film and to end the trilogy.

The little twist with the Mandarin was disappointing. I'm glad I read it before I saw it, because it probably would've ruined the film if i didn't know. What makes me disappointed about that is that he's Iron Man's number one villain, so he is going to have to come back at one point, and it's gonna be hard to bring him back.

Can somebody please explain to me the sense in releasing a film in english in another part of the world beforehand? God, I seriously hope this doesn't happen to something I'm a part of. But, a lus Iron Man 3 is now online. Just to me it would make more sense releasing all english versions at the exact same time to make sure that doesn't happen.

One questions for those who have seen it...

[BLACKOUT]Does he get to use a massive unibeam when in the heart breaker armor??[/BLACKOUT]

I've seen 4 or 5 people cosplay mandarin at dragoncon, megacon, and a few other cons

Are you sure they weren't actually Ming the Merciless?

[BLACKOUT]i watched iron man 1 again last night, first time since seeing iron man 3 twice, and it does not make sense for killian to have been behind the events of the first movie. i looked for how it could work, and came up short. the ten rings in iron man 1 were legit. it does not seem economical to connect killian to stane and the 10 rings. so this begs the question, will the real 10 rings appear in a later movie if they make one?[/BLACKOUT]

The Mandarin complaints:

THE MANDARIN WAS IN THE WHOLE MOVIE! Guy Pearce played the Mandarin, those are his last words, "I am the Mandarin!" Yeah they mixed the character up to make sense in our world and they did a great job. They took the joke the character would be in reality and made fun of it through Kingsleys portrayal and then had him be the real villain anyway with Pearce being the real Mandarin.

Would you of rather had Kingsley running around shooting lasers out of his fingers & pretending to be Chinese? Guy Pearce is as good as a villain your going to get in any film and he played a great Iron Man villain in IM3. No complaints here. Yeah they didn't perfectly adapt the character, so what? We could of had Killian alone & it would of been generic but the Mandarin twist fit perfectly. He ended up being Starks biggest and baddest foe in the trilogy. What more could anyone possibly want?

Would you rather of had Topher Grace flying around with his eyes taped to look Chinese? Or maybe they could of gotten Nic Cage to butt rape some more comic book characters? Maybe they could of gotten Mickey Rourke to come back & play the Mandarin & he could of had a little pet bird. Oh wait why didn't they just get Jackie Chan? Live with it, they got it as close to right as they could with what they had to work with.

My only complaint
They really didn't show much from the other 30 something suits. Yeah they flew around and exploded, one came apart and came back together, the Hulkbuster did nothing really, I don't even remember seeing the Gemini suit do anything cool, what did the suits really even do that were cool during the final battle?

Yeah, you know that scene where the heartbreaker arrives with all the other armors !? That's all you'll see of the heartbreaker.

Killian could've hooked up Stane and the Ten Rings with one another to help set up their under-the-table business and the hit on Stark. Then Killian lets the Ten Rings in on the identity of their target to put the screws on Stane.

Fantastic, awesome movie. Right from the first few seconds of the movie, you could already tell this wasn't your typical Marvel superhero movie. Shane took the film in some pretty risky directions, but I think he really managed to pull it off. Kudos to the man.

And that final action sequence.......that was just plain awesomeness.

Yeah watching that final battle again really hit the spot for me, that was a damn good sequence there, that's the sort of action that i personally like. I can see how people would be jumping up and down for the avengers but when you got some proper mano e mano one on one action, nothin,
g beats it in my eyes.

I agree

Team up films like TA are cool and all, but I prefer the mano e mano action of solo films.

good film,I like it
"clean slate" and Harley and some of those plots,I can smell TDKR
Yeah, the clean slate comment made me think of this scene, which is good.

I like how the clean slate tied into the opening of the movie with Killian seeing the fireworks in 1999 - Stark creating his own fireworks with the suit explosions in 2013.

I watched IM3 last night, and maybe I need to watch it again, but I honestly did not like it very much. :csad:

I could change my mind once I've watched it a billion times on bluray, but right now for me: IM2>>>IM3.

I would rank them:

Iron Man
Iron Man 3
Iron Man 2

More later, but IRON MAN THREE is the best Marvel Studios film to date, by a lot...even if I had some problems with it.

Shane Black's script outdid the whit and hollowness of Joss Whedon's Avengers script. This isn't even up for debate.

[BLACKOUT]Did anybody else wish they'd made the little boy Amandus Cho, just as a little nod to the fans? [/BLACKOUT]
