The James Franco/ Harry Osborn Thread

James Franco was amazing in this movie. Totally stole the show and I thought his acting was far superior to Tobey's. I was gutted when Harry died...I don't read the comics and had no idea that was going to happen.

James was also good in the video game (also Harry doesn't die in the battle Royale, )

Ok, that's it, I must get ahold of the video game.

And btw: James Franco = only reason worth watching SM3.

Franco and Tobey made SM3 for me. Sandman was good but not great. In the video game Venom kidnaps Sandmans daughter and Venom tells Sandman to help him kill Spider-Man or his daughter dies.

Tobey really, really disappointed me. The script had alot to do with it, but I was just simply not moved by him anymore. Until SM3, I accepted his version of Peter Parker, though it didn't feel true to me. Now, his character is an idiotic, beyond awkward, unsympathetic jerk. I absolutely cannot stand him in this movie. From his comparisans of 'fame', to his crying, to his last scene with Harry, I absolutely hated him. He, above all else, killed the movie.

anyone else think he could have made an awesome Joker after seeing this movie?

I thought Harry Osborn was awesome in this movie. They did an extremely good job handling his character. I dont think I would really change anything.

I honestly think he contributed more to the movie than any of the other villains.

Wordy mcword...I actually enjoyed SM3 quite a bit...(which puts me in the minority I suppose,) but while I found Emo Peter funny at parts and Topher and Church both had their moments it was really all because of Franco's incredible depiction of Harry and the resolution of his storyarc with Peter. I don't know if Raimi intended it or not, or if Raimi and the studio wanted it or not, but for the three Spiderman movies the central relationship is NOT Peter/MJ, (which thanks in no small part to the fact that KD while better SM3 than the first two was clearly miscast as MJ is really not a fun ship at all,) but Peter and Harry even in the first one where Franco wasn't even given all that much...for one thing the two of them have more realistic and complicated a dynamic from the first moment on and they're even, (dare I say it? I do!) IMHO sexier together as well. But Franco was able to play sweet guy Harry and sadistic creepy villain both so well in the same film, (the grin he gave Peter at the pie shop was friggin awesome!) while as all the best villains do showing a certain humanity and flashes of the decent person Harry could be even at his most evil moments...Raimi arguably did a better job with the Osborne/Parker storyline than the ending in the original comics, and I just feel that no matter what they do in future sequels, (kill off KD, introduce Felicia, have Pete fall for Gwen for real, Kill off Gwen and her dad, bring in the vulture, bring in the Lizard, have Peter befriend his old tormentor Flash Johnson what have you,) the series has *really* ended with the death of Harry who will always ALWAYS be Peter's best friend. It wasn't neccessarily that way in the comics but that's how it's played out in this film trilogy and whether was ever the original intention is irrelevant to the fact that the movies have in essence become a tragic trilogy about former friends turned enemies who reconcile only when one sacrifices his life for the other.

harry has been the high point of every movie for me. The other cast have improved but so has james and really stays ahead of the rest. Where peter could be whiney and mary jane damn right annoying harry has always kept me intrested. Why'd he have to die! :(

Is too, when so far the ending of most stories have been pretty faithful. Minus Ock/Venom's story endings.

Norman was impaled by his own glider in the comics. Harry died saving his friends and with Peter holding his hand as he died. So on and so forth. :o

the part in bold says it all- room for manouvre. I think the way he died was right and fitting for his character but I think it was way too soon especially when the character has been such a vital part of the trilogy and when the actor has shined. I think if they were to finish the spiderman movies here i would be alright with it but as sony are intending to do more it seems a waste

Just because it happened in the comics, it doesn't have to be translated to the big screen the same. But Harry has nothing else to do in the movieworld. He has outlived his purpose in the Spider-Man movies.

I think Tobey and Franco combine were what held this movie together at its core. MJ being there and her conflict, which was present, also helped. Peter/MJ were the pushign force in the last two movies and while I think their last scene in this was the perfect ending to the trilogy, I was a big proponent of their relationship. He suffered a tragic, but peaceful and bittersweet end.

Sandman was cool and Venom was cool but com bine their stories were loose and lacking structure. What held them and Peter/MJ's conflict together was Harry's arc, which carried the mmovie as Peter's carried the last two.

A good perofmrance. Albeit, I would hardly call Tobey bad in this. In fact I think this is his best performance of the three, he just doesn't have as much of a character arc as he had in the first two, though.

Here's an awesome fan protrait of James Franco as Harry Osborn / New Goblin

It occurs to me that while Peter had to face other villains who tried to strike at his heart before by attacking loved ones, Harry's New Goblin was the ONLY one who ever tried to play real mind games with him, by engineering MJ's breaking up with him and then the whole "I'm the other guy...taste of strawberries," thing...and he was VERY effective at it too which was actually a heckuva lot more interesting than just watching a physical attack on Peter or his family ever was and only added to the emotional intensity of his battle with Peter at his mansion, (my favorite in the film.) Moreover Peter started playing similar mind games with Harry as well..."Little goblin Jr..." Church and Grace both did excellent jobs in their respective roles, but ultimately their villains just didn't rise to the pleasures of New Goblin because they simply didn't have the type of complicated backstory with Peter that Harry does, (and which we fans have seen develop over the whole trilogy.) Harry and Peter could press each other's buttons in a way NONE of Spidey's other foes throughout the whole series could...or ever will.

I've been looking for a few things in relation to the New Goblin. I have this tradition that any time a character blows my expectations in a movie, I get a 12" figure to stand on my shelf.

Well, "X-Treme Gobby" did more than enough to satisfy that criteria, but so far as I know there's not anything that size yet other than walkie-talkies or something.

Actually, as it goes I can't even find a worthwhile desktop image. I'll have to hunt through this thread more.

He rocked my socks though. The end battle with him was amazing.
