Why they added that "tragic" backstory I have no idea it made no sympathy for him at all in my eyes.

What tragic backstory is that?

I think Jimmy didn't suck at all at the beginning ... ut now ... the whole secret agent thing (funny) was in fact taken too seriously and the whole mariage with Chloe .. is wrong, just wrong. I think they write him badly right now : move forward, go back, move forward, go back. not very good.
So I agree he is lame, but not always. He was well wrritten in some episodes.
IMO, I think it is not a very interesting character (in the comics), and I only liked him in the Donner movies OR recently in Superman Returns. I think he was neat.

Am I one of the few that enjoyed "Sleeper" for the sheer cornball spy antics?

It was like I was reading one of the classic and corny "Superman's best Pal: Jimmy Olsen" comics, which always had Jimmy in corny antics.
