The Joker Thread - Part 1

Probably because it's what we're used to.

Dafoe also looks real good for his age, fwiw.
I honestly feel the opposite. Cesar and Jack weren't super young when they played The Joker, and Heath may have been younger but the makeup brought out a bunch of wrinkles. Leto looked super young but I feel like they made him too attractive with the muscular physique. Monaghan was definitely a younger Joker but that was on some FOX TV show. Phoenix definitely looked older at least.

Maybe it's because that a younger Joker done right to me could feel very ageless, very physically "pure", almost reptilian. There's also the slightly more androgynous aspect as well.

I was talking mainly with regards to the comics tbh. The Joker always seems to be depicted somewhere around late his twenties or early thirties. Neal Adams, in an interview with Kevin Smith, even went so far as to say that he always thought of the Joker as being in his early twenties. That's really young for the Joker, imo.

I never envisionned the Joker being a young man.
Maybe it's because I'm from the 89' generation fans who grew up with Nicholson. Maybe also because when I was a kid and was watching Batman TAS dubbed in my native langage, the Joker voice-actor had a mature voice (I love Hamill, but I have to pay homage to Pierre Hatet, a fantastic and iconic french voice actor who dubbed the Joker in cartoon and games until his death last year).
Reading comics, I now can see the character being younger but by reflex, I always imagine all these character being, at the earliest, in their late thirties.

So, yeah, I wouldn't have problem if the Joker is noticeably older than Batman again in movies.

DiCaprio would knock Joker out of the park.
I think he could pull it off, but I don't really dig his look for the role and I'm also just not sure I absolutely need to see DiCaprio as Joker.

For me, they wouldn't even have to de-age him.

Always found the idea of an older Joker to be quite interesting.

I've said this here before, but I think the main reason an older Joker wouldn't really work is that he's generally depicted as being just on the scene. If the Joker is in his 60's, like Dafoe is, then it begs the question how he is only now active. Also, Dafoe will be near 70 by the time the Joker likely appears, so that's probably pushing it, as perfect as he is for the role.

I've never been a fan of his, but mostly because of his "serious actor" vibe he always gives off. But I also don't think he has it in him.

I see how his vibe could turn off people. I just think he has the ability to display charisma while being able to go from 0-100 reaaaal quick. I think he could do well with the way Joker goes from laughing to seeing red.

Even though I think he'd be great, I think I'm still tipping toward an unknown that we only see as Joker.

I think he might be able to pull it off judging from his character in Django, but I'm just not a fan of that casting choice.

I feel the same way about the Johnny Depp rumors but I think that's an even lazier casting than DiCaprio. He was great in Black Mass but none of his other performances have really stood out to me. That, and it's just a lazy choice; WAAAAAY too "Hollywood" for my tastes.

I don't see DiCaprio pulling off Joker, and also waaaaay too big a name for my preferences.

So is Depp, plus Depp is washed-up. Black Mass is about the only performance where he's given a **** in a long time. He is sooooo lazy and phoning it in as Grindelwald.

Dafoe is obviously a fantastic choice, but I have to wonder if the fancast popularity will hurt his chances or not. There's also the obvious factors, like whether or not he'd say yes, if Reeves even wants him for the role, etc.

And, like Art Vandelay said, they COULD use de-aging technology and/or makeup.

Dafoe is probably way too old by this point for what they'd want, especially opposite Pattinson.

And why would they really want to use de-aging technology when they could easily just cast someone younger?
