The Joker Thread - Part 1

Yes, no trilogy this time! If done right, there's nothing wrong with 4 or 5 movies, and jugding by the reception the trailers and test screenings are receiving, maybe WB sees this. And it would give plenty of time to develop an unique Joker. I wasn't crazy for another Joker now, but damn, after this 2nd trailer I think we all need Mr. J here, at some point.

yes, maybe something akin to the animated series joker.

where he's not trying to poison a whole city, or take over crime in gotham, or prove some kind of ideological point.

something smaller scale - he's going around causing these smaller fires that batman has to keep putting out - because it's just too much fun toying with batman.

"i'm going to poison this or that person at midnight."

"give me copyrights to my joker fish or i'll blow up gotham tower." lol

he enjoys that cat and mouse game.

oh, and make sure he hides in an abandoned amusement park!
we need that creepy sh** with joker!

I don't know how anybody can look at that trailer, that cinematography, that Gotham City and not be excited at the thought of a new Joker existing within that world. Even if you're burnt out on him. The horror vibes are oozing out of that trailer from every corner.

Maybe Matt Reeves lands on a real life clown or real life psychopath and matches his Joker with that. Or maybe the process for writing and designing Joker isn't so much the Riddler way, but instead Matt looks at what exactly inspired the creation of the character in the first place.

Alls I know is a Joker with intense prosthetic work is the one thing we haven't seen. Making him look like a monster.

And joker gas!

I can't reeeeally see him giving Joker a super drastic Riddler-type redesign.

Then again movie monster-style Joker with prosthetics is super different. But I don't think he'll look like Pagliacci or anything like that. At the same time I don't see him wearing modern italian designer suits here.

Bermejo is the move.

It's modern, a bit gothic, and fits the general look of what we've seen so far IMO

Honestly I can't even really think of any real life Jokers. I can't think of any criminal who's THAT flamboyant or psychotic.

And a lot of the killers I keep reading about are either too rapey, too chub chub, or too ideological.
Keep in mind that the way that Matt translated the Zodiac into Riddler was into aesthetics and the ciphers. Other than that the way Riddler picks and attacks his victims seems very different than what Zodiac did. Zodiac picked up random couples and random people and then killed them usually in spaces that were out in the open, Riddler on the other hand is targeting politicians, kidnapping them or entering their houses to kill them and his motives are more ideological in nature than those of the Zodiac. Not to mention he goes far bigger in scale, using bombs and such, resembling more of a terrorist.

So Reeves can still use a real life criminal as reference for Joker but not make it a carbon copy. of said criminal. Said, if he used John Wayne Gacey as reference, he wouldn't make Joker a serial rapist.

In terms of pure, random, senseless murdering just for kicks and laughs, the Dnepropetrovsk Maniacs are a pretty good real life example of that. They took photos/video recordings of a lot of their murders. Pretty gruesome stuff if you can handle that sort of thing, but I could see Joker murdering people in a similarly gleeful way.

I get that some people here might be tired of the use of making every Batman villain a serial killer, or at least, having that be so common as an influence, but when it comes to the Joker, I'm not sure what other real life people could be used.

Cult leaders. *cough* Yes I know, Charles Manson is as overused in this context as serial killers.

A better idea would be to just lean away from direct real life references. Play up the Joker as being just as fantastical and surreal as the Batman. He refuses to play by your "real world" rules.

Real life references can be used, but it depends on what it’s being applied to. Think in terms of style, personality, speech, M.O., motive and so on.

For example he could dress like Bowie, have Tyler Durden’s personality, speak like Manson, kill like Jason Vorhees, and have a bizarre motive pulled from the comics that tie into the story. Maybe even pull some of Joker’s best and horrifying moments from random comics. Maybe put a Joker spin on a real life murder.

Joker is a cocktail of madness. So, I’d say give us a combination of things just as long as it fits the story.

Recently, I was watching one of those true crime shows, this one on Elizabeth Short, better known as the Black Dahlia murder. Probably one of the most ghastly, horrific murder cases I've ever heard about. One of the most unsettling details of the case was how her body was initially mistaken to be a mannequin by the woman who found her, so pale was Short's body (which was left in several pieces, and appeared to be posed in a provocative position). She had also been given a "Glasgow smile".

Her killer was never found, but one theory suggested her death might have done in such a way as to pay tribute to the artist Man Ray. This is where the Joker comes in. What if the Joker's killings are done as twisted art installations? Imagine a scene where mannequin's are seen in a store window, posed, only discovered to be actual people? Or a couple in a park with a picnic, posed with big Joker smiles?

I’m cool with that , but that was Joker’s shtick in Batman 1989.

It did cross my mind, but wasn't he just vandalizing artwork set to Prince? It's been a long time since I've watched it.

It doesn't have to be his M.O, though, just something he dabbles in. I'm just trying to think of ways to differentiate his killings from the Riddler.

Although this begs the question, just how far with these references can Matt Reeves go? It's a bit weird to think that a franchise that sells Legos and other such toys would be use real life killers as an influence.

I know for certain that I want a horrific version of Joker gas/venom. It could distort his victims faces so badly that their mouths split in the corners. Maybe even savagely stab someone with a fork.

The Joker gas or Smilex could plausibly be a fatal, quick-acting gas that functions similar to Botox.

Reeves used Nirvana’s ‘Something in the Way’ in the trailer and compared Pattinson to a rockstar living in a decaying mansion.

If Reeves’ Batman is inspired by Kurt Cobain, and he continues to draw from pop culture figures, then I’d honestly advocate for some Michael Jackson influence. Michael Jackson and Joker underwent a significant physical change resulting in their skin being bleached. Jackson’s soft spoken voice and unsettling appearance could provide an interesting foundation for Joker.
