The Joker Thread - Part 1

I think he's the type of "pin up" actor I'd rather not see as the Joker.

What happened to all the ugly, character actors?

I know many people praised his performance as Ted Bundy but I don't think he's that great.

not a pin up in that sense, but someone that kids like and think is cool... the goth kid thinking he is the first to die his hair green... he's huge in pop culture... I don't want that, I want a disturbing, frightening unreliable character now.
Isn't that sort of intrinsic to the character at this point? I think even a grotesque monstrosity ala Serious House on Serious Earth would win over the hot topic crowd.

Ugliness doesn’t always translate well through clown makeup from what I’ve been seeing. It seems to hide it. Yet, it has a reverse effect on those that would be considered attractive. It’s really weird. Unless you go for someone old.

What I want for Joker is pretty simple. A guy between 30s to mid 40s with strong facial features that Is eccentric and won’t over do “crazy”.

Yup. I mean, Heath Ledger was considered a heartthrob but did anyone think he was a “pin up” in The Dark Knight?

I'm down for a Michael Myers-esque take on the Joker that really pushes the boundaries of his humanity. Someone so evil and insane that Batman and Gordon even for the briefest of moments question the man's mortality -- "He's just a man... Right?".

It would definitely be a fresh take. If they do the Joker, he should be saved for the final film in the trilogy (Killing Joke adaptation perhaps?)
This is where Jared was going if you ask me. His Joker was clearly inspired by, among others, Endgame Joker, who, the story implies, has existed as a figure in Gotham all throughout history as the Pale Man.

Then why did it seem like he was some Night at The Roxbury ****boi villain who’s been winning dance offs for the last ten years?

Because we didn't get to see it for more than 10 seconds at a time.

I give Leto and Ayer the benefit of the doubt, I think some of their ideas could have been good but they just weren’t executed well.

For example, I think updating Joker from the Mob aesthetic to a more gang inspired aesthetic could have been interesting, as if Joker were around today he probably would look more like a gang leader than a 40s mobster. I just think it went too far with the face tattoos and the grills/caps and all of that.

as far as the acting goes, I think I read somewhere that a lot of Leto’s work was improvised. Based on what we see I just don’t think Leto is a good improviser, if the script had been better and he was given a more solid direction than just “act crazy”, I think Leto could have pulled an interesting Joker.

I still don’t understand why they didn’t go with a David Bowie/DKReturns/effeminate but scary type Joker, as that seems tailor made for the type of actor Jared Leto is.

Leto just isn't a good actor, though. I think is Oscar win for "Dallas Buyers Club" convinced people otherwise, but if you look at his body of work, you're not going to find many performances that go beyond "adequate".
