EXCLUSIVE: Warner Bros and DC are in the early stages of another Batman Universe spinoff movie, this one telling the origin story of the signature villain The Joker. The studio has set The Hangover‘s Todd Phillips to co-write a script with 8 Mile scribe Scott Silver. Phillips will direct the movie, and Martin Scorsese will produce it with Phillips. This will be the first film under a new banner that has yet to be named in which WB can expand the canon of DC properties and create unique storylines with different actors playing the iconic characters.

I’m told that the intention is to make an origin story that isn’t part of any other iteration. The Joker has memorably been part of two Batman movies in the form of Jack Nicholson and Heath Ledger, and was most recently played by Jared Leto in the first Suicide Squad film. He will reprise in the Suicide Squad sequel and the Harley Quinn spinoff, but this new film will launch the character with a different actor, possibly younger.

An intriguing part is the setting. The intention is to make a gritty and grounded hard-boiled crime film set in early-’80s Gotham City that isn’t meant to feel like a DC movie as much as one of Scorsese’s films from that era, like Taxi Driver, Raging Bull or The King Of Comedy. I’m told that Phillips and Silver are writing already, but there is nothing firm on where this will fit into the DC schedule.

I love it because it's so damn bizarre, and a new actor... the cycle starts all over again.

I....have no idea how to feel about this :funny:

Not sure if this helps or not

About the new banner, as described to me this new banner allows for Warner to take characters from DC properties to spin-off into features

These spin-offs would have no connection to current DC storyline and the actors playing those characters.

So technically Leto still plays Joker in current DC storyline but allows for new actor to be cast in role in Phillips film

The only way I could see this is if we see multiple origins throughout the film, and not completely sure what's real and what isn't.

Joker doesn't really need an origin film, though!

It worked once... It can work again.

Yeah, I don't have a definite stance on the topic. The mystery works, but I can't say Jack's Joker was less interesting because we got to see him as Jack Napier.

I hate everything about this idea.....but then you throw in Martin Scorcese. Super conflicted.

He doesn't need one at all... but if this is going to be a weird off-shoot, why not? Why not see what they can come up with? I think it's an interesting experiment.

Leto's Joker was so bad they had to go back in time to get rid of him!

In terms of the origin story part of this movie, I guess it depends on how far back they go with it. The movie could start with him getting dropped in the chemical vat and just show his rise to infamy in Gotham, never showing a man before the clown.

I'm not sure how I feel about this, on one hand, I do think a Joker movie could work if done right, on the other, a full scale origin movie is not a good idea IMO. And I'm not interested in seeing a younger actor take on the role and make this some kind of coming of age tale of the Joker with a complete backstory.

Who knows how serious this is, but if they're going with a younger actor and a full scale backstory, then... pass.

I'd expect the first act to be the man before Joker, then his transformation and then is rise to power. Kind of like Batman 89 without him dying.

This is awesome news because we don't get enough Batman stories.

They'll need to be especially careful with this. The Joker is one of their most marketable and profitable characters. The potential is certainly there, but failure could be absolutely disastrous. This will need time, passion, and ingenuity to pull off. Let's see if this creative team has it.

And hey, we get another round of fan-casting Mr. J! :awesome:

^This. No definitive origin for the Joker! :nuhu:

Joker movie? **** off, WB.
