The Joker Thread - Part 1

I still say "the Joker as cartel gangster" look *could* have worked, but. . .it would have required more effort to communicate a message of "The Joker is mocking you". The Joker using the visual imagery of a drug kingpin should not, ever, be flattering to said kingpins.

Leto felt more like a flamboyant gangster than the clown prince of crime.

:funny: 'Cause yeah, the Joker's never been portrayed as a flamboyant gangster or anything. Riiiight.

"Flamboyant gangster" and "clown prince of crime" are pretty much interchangeable terms anyway. If you can't see how there were clown elements to Leto's take along with the cartel honcho thing, I don't know what to tell you.

That's basically like saying Ledger's doesn't fit as a clown because he's also a dirty/grimey hobo.

No problem with another go-around for Leto-Joker for me. Might get something cool out of him with Gunn.

Leto himself was never really the problem for me, actually like about half of what they did with him in SS. Even the tattoos & teeth kinda work given what they were going for, not ideal, but they never bugged me that much either. James'll probably tone some of that stuff down anyway, we might get something a little more traditional here.

Gunn and Leto hate each other, so all this stuff isn't happening.

Eh, there were some people that hated him from the moment he was announced because they think he's a D-bag or because they don't like his band. But I think most of the vitriol towards him boiled down to three things: 1. the Joker's overall look in the film, 2. his on-set antics (or "method acting") and 3. his performance. Now, #1 and #2 could have probably been overcome if #3 worked for people. But it didn't. Suicide Squad made a lot of money but it's generally understood to be a bad movie and Leto wasn't one of the elements people liked. Anyway, I agree that he has to go. I know a few people here and there like him and others think he could have been good had the material been better (and I would agree with that sentiment) but the damage is done. Cut bait and move on. Phoenix is likely one and done, but that doesn't mean they can't recast the DCEU Joker and give him a more classic (or at least better) aesthetic.

I see what you did there.

Uhh?

Leto's in Gunn's movie.

Only if the two could resolve the beef they had.

But more importantly i dont want Joker in SS2, i want him in a batman movie...SS did his thing with him, now fix it somewhere else.

You don’t want no beef

Ah, ****, yeah sorry. Mixed up the SS sequel with Birds Of Prey.

Well, the "Letoker" in BOP appears to be a double. Not sure that they're actually gonna have Leto in that movie.

Yeah. It'd be a waste, but guess I could see them pulling something like that, you only see him obscured partially and it's a body double.

It'd be weird if they did that and he's still clearly "Leto Joker" in aesthetic/design though.

If Leto could do a complete 360 and keep nothing from his SS performance, I’d be open to him returning as Joker. New hairstyle, new personality, no tattoos.

They could explain him getting rid of the tattoos by taking another acid bath.

I’m still convinced Leto could have done a good TDKReturns style Joker. His performance in BR2049 is evidence of that.

A 360 would make you end up in the same exact spot/direction!

Honestly, after having watched Doom Patrol, the person I really want as the Joker is Alan Tudyk. . .

Notwithstanding the fact that some have latched onto him as 'flavour of the month' despite his talent, Rami Malek remains my firm favourite for any recasting of the Joker. I think his mannerisms, eyes and control of his voice would be perfectly suited to the creepiness of the Joker.

Personally, I wouldn't change the hairstyle. I really like how it's slicked-back; it's a nice little change from previous versions (for the most part, because Nicholson had slicked-back hair as well) because it gives him a very vain, devilish look a la Batman RIP and Batman: Endgame just to name a couple. If I HAD to change the hair, I would probably make it a little more "firm" and wavy.

He's far from my first choice, but I can see where you're coming from. He could even borrow a bit of his flamboyance/theatricality from playing Freddy Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody.

Sorry for the multiple replies, but I think about stuff like this a lot. They could very easily change up his look by just explaining to the general audience that he felt like it. Now, I'm fine with most of the tattoos (emphasis on MOST) but if they decide to button up his shirts (and they REALLY SHOULD) and ditch the jewelry for some more formal outfits or even just ties and bowties, I'd be 100% fine with that. Tl;Dr, less pimped up cartel leader, more flamboyant David Bowie-esque psychotic crime lord. Also, make him more outwardly abusive to Harley to add more depth to her and also to make him seem that much more evil.

Leto wouldn't agree to changing his style because he was in love with it. He had many of the ideas that ended up in the final product

He seems to be aware of the character's many incarnations. I'm sure someone could convince him to change it up a bit.

I feel like I read somewhere he was kind of backtracking and saying that it wasn’t all his idea, lol so maybe he does acknowledge that the choices were bad in hindsight?
