The Joker Thread - Part 1

Jeremiah was fine in Season 5
He was doing a TDKReturns Joker thing but it just didn’t work. He didn’t have the gravitas to make it work. He really was exciting and great as Jerome though.

**** I loved Gotham. So many of you guys missed out on that show.

I think Ben McKenzie and Sean Pertwee have to be my favorite Gordon and Alfred.

And I like to think Leto was just an example of completely wasted potential. Or maybe he would've sucked regardless. Who knows?

If nothing else, it's a shame because the guy is perfect for The Joker aesthetically.
I don't even think Leto was bad. Just average. People would hate him a lot less without the tattoos I think.

If he would’ve watched the animated TDKReturns and emulated that, everything would’ve been ok.

god so sad to think how close we were to a functioning DCEU :(

Leto, Affleck, and Eisenberg were three pillars of the DCEU and a lot rested on those characters working.

I disagree that Leto would have been better without the tattoos. His performance is bad too. His laugh is awful and soooo forced and fake. And he's just....not a good version. He doesn't come off like any kind of criminal mastermind that everyone would be afraid of, or would even be a nemesis to Batman. He comes off like a two-bit gangbanger who's more interested in hanging out with his girlfriend in nightclubs and driving his purple Lamborghini around than in sowing chaos or hatching villainous schemes.

Honestly I think there's a very strong possibility that Leto's Joker was pretty badly butchered in the editing room, the entire editing thought process for that movie seemed to be cutting anything of substance in favor of stuff they thought was "cool" or "fun", I would not be surprised if some genuinely good Joker material was left on the floor.

Leto is a terrible actor and his Joker was always going to be terrible.

The first part is just not true, Leto can be a very good actor when he wants to be or in the right role, and even after hating his aesthetic the first time I saw him, I still wasn't too concerned about his performance, making it doubly galling when.....nope, that sucked too.

Although I do kind of feel like his Oscar win for Dallas Buyers Club (which he was excellent in) went to his head and inflated his pretentiousness more than it already was, and his recent performances have suffered as a result. He wasn't very good in Blade Runner 2049 either, and it was in a bit of a similarly overacted, affected way to Suicide Squad.

Leto is not a terrible actor. There's a very good reason why so many of us were excited about him getting the role. If they were willing to go back to the drawing board I would not be against giving him a second chance.

I still feel like he potentially could have been a decent Joker, he just....wasn't.
Honestly I feel like he could have been an amazing Joker, but they chose a questionable characterization, wrote it poorly, directed it poorly, and then put it through the most incompetent editing team I've ever seen in a big budget film. So many bad decisions carried out with a ridiculous amount of over-confidence.

Can we name the good Leto performances? I'm drawing a blank. Fight Club? He barely does anything in that movie. American Psycho? Again, he's in it for two seconds.

Suicide Squad is edited very, very weirdly. In my review I said it feels like characters are introduced about three different times each.

I already mentioned Dallas Buyers Club. He's also good/fine in Switchback, Requiem for a Dream, Panic Room...

That Dallas Buyers Club performance has dated worse than out of date milk.

Leto was really good in Dallas Buyers Club and Requiem For A Dream. And fit his character in Blade Runner 2049. He just doesn’t know what to do with Joker, his ideas were awful. Not to mention piss poor costume design, writing & direction.

Gotham is garbage. Every second that I saw of it.

Leave Margot/Harley in the Birds of Prey/Suicide Squad universe where she can thrive.

Of course I’d love to see Joaquin and Rob. But I don’t like this “light continuity” idea. The general audience won’t care but I find it lazy. There needs to be universe logic or it takes me out of a movie. Sorry. Not gonna cut it for me. A good screenwriter can’t be good at what they do if they can fix it in a heartbeat. Unless the timeline adds up. Either...

A) The Batman is set in the late 90’s and there’s a few lines about Bruce’s parents being killed in the 80’s Joker riots. There’s been a change in the architecture (this sounds ridiculous even reading it back to myself). But it’s kinda confirmed to be set in 2021-ish. OR..

There is no “letter B” because the alternative is Arthur Fleck is 70 years old and Batman is 30 in a current time frame. That’s dumb, you may as well recast and rewire Joker so an actor who is Rob’s age can play the part.

I’ll only entertain one more thing: if Rorschach or somebody else can convince me on a way to make Arthur be the Joker but it’s all a b.s story that he’s telling in the final scene of Todd’s film (inside Arkham). What if a Joker 2 is set in the 2020’s and he’s the same age, he escapes Arkham and legit thinks it’s the 80’s. It’s all a delusion and his mind plays tricks on him? I’m throwing hail mary’s here to justify this. Help me out guys.

For a second I thought “man, did Rupert Grint get hooked on coke?”
