The Joker Thread - Part 1

Ohhhh. It's the guy who shot the kid. Now I memba.

I think he'd be good for Guy Gardner, just looking at him.

Lol, no. They’re absolutely leading men.
People mistake character actor for “they can’t be a leading man!”. Each of those actors have a long history of being a character actor. Nicholson is honestly the only one who broke into the pure leading man spot early and stayed there. But Leto, Phoenix and Ledger all represented the definition of character actor. Michael Shannon is still a character actor. So is Gary Oldman. So is Willem DaFoe. That doesn’t mean they’re also not leading man material when it calls for it.

It just occurred to me that Jesse Plemons would make a good Arnold Flass. Gordon's skeevy crooked partner and sort of the representative of the corrupt cops with Gordon as the odd man out. Imagine him trying to bully/threaten Gordon and Jeffrey Wright beating the **** out of him a la Year One.

Once you're the lead of the highest grossing film for a major studio, you're not a character actor. Jack wasn't playing Tom Hank's funny friend and Joaquin isn't going to play the main villain's sidekick.

I still look at Leto and Hardy as character actors. Hardy just dips in and out. I guess I have a different definition of the term than whatever the “Wikipedia” calls it.

I think there's a difference between being a versatile actor and being a character actor. A character actor are guy's like Harry Dean Stanton, William Fichtner, Stephen Root, Peter Stormare. Guys who show up in strong supporting roles to add "character" to the film. Even though Hardy plays a wide range of out there roles, he's still a traditional leading man in a lot of his stuff.

Could you also theoretically add Bill Hader and Jim Carrey to that list (even if the latter's wackiness can be annoying)?

Bill Hader maybe, but I think he's moved past that. Jim Carrey's been a lead since Ace Ventura, def not. John Hawkes, Michael Rooker, Luis Guzmán, Glenn Fleshler. People like that.

John Hawkes as an older Joker? Now there's an idea.

I love him so much, but he'll be at least 65 by the time a sequel comes around.

I don't really remember seeing him in anything but he kinda has an interesting look for the role, I guess.

He looks very good for his age as well.

But I like in him in sympathetic roles more. He would have been a great Gordon. I want him for Pa Kent in a Superman reboot lol.

A spindly physique could do wonders in terms of scariness.

I don't think Tom Hardy is a conventional leading man. Definitely not in the way of people like Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, Will Smith, etc. He does a lot of unconventional stuff and indie movies, and frankly he's weird and shows zero interest in the Hollywood scene. I think most people would consider Hardy a character actor.

Once you play Mad Max you're a leading man. He's the lead of Sony's big superhero franchise! Marlon Brando was a leading man too.

Beyond perfect casting.

Stiiil think he looks more like a Guy Gardner. :funny:
Also perfect.

Ledger and Nicholson were absolutely, clearly leading men rather than character actors under most definitions of the term. But I think our definitions of "character actor" probably differ.

But see, that right there is why I like him for Joker. Give him an evil character to sink his teeth into. It's out of the box for him.
