The Joker Thread - Part 1

None of the movies have actually had him kill the mayor before, right?

Maybe that could be his first public crime, as a nod to the original 40s Joker.

Something that could be really frightening to me is a POV murder scene, where you just hear the sounds and see him attacking the camera until it fades to black or white.

Am I the only one who thinks John DiMaggio sucks as the Joker? People always seem to love him, but I thought he was really bad.

Probably. But I'm personally not a huge fan of Jason Spisak's Joker voice.

I do think DiMaggio's Joker voice would be perfect for an adaptation of that ugly graphic novel, though.

I also don't really care for Spisak's. One of the more obscure Joker voices that I do like, however, is Larry Storch's from Filmation's 'The Adventures of Batman' from 1968.

When I was a kid I had a video compilation of a lot of the episodes. Used to watch it over and over again. So Larry Storch is one of those default voices that I imagine for the Joker whenever I happen to be reading the comics.

I can't get it out of my head that Storch's Joker sounds like either that ugly reporter from Gravity Falls or Chris and Tomar's "intellectual gamer" (???) voices from Oneyplays. Timestamp at 18:43

He should be a bit more minimalistic than usual but should still stand out (ARKHAM ORIGINS!!!)

Phoenix's Joker design is probably the most grounded one we've seen thus far, and yet he was still pretty colorful.

The Joker should be the devil. Evil personified. A nihilistic force that corrupts everything and everyone it comes into contact with.. Until he meets Batman, someone he can not corrupt.

An unstoppable force meets an immovable object

I like it cause it's very dark/Nicholson esque, mixed with his own twisted versions of his DiMaggio-isms like the "who's got a camera" part

Though the concept of the story isn't my favorite, I'd love to see figures of the Three Jokers in McFarlane's DC line. It would technically knock out both the 40s Joker (who has somehow never had a figure yet) as well as a proper TKJ Joker. All based on Jason Fabok's artwork, of course.

"The Criminal" (original Joker) can come with two heads: one serious and one smiling/laughing. Maaaybe a tommy gun as well.

"The Comedian" (TKJ Joker) can come with a camera, cane, and a knife.

"The Clown" (classic Silver Age/super evil, sadistic Joker) can come with a fish, a crowbar, and a revolver.

There's an actor on the current season of Fargo who I think has a good look for the Joker, although his age and ethnicity (he's an Italian born actor) probably rule him out. Still, his gauntness, and his character's style are what I have in mind for a new Joker.

Plus, this photo just reinforces my belief the Joker should start wearing hats again.

Nicholson? Really? Huh. I'll have to listen out for that, next time I do a rewatch of Under the Red Hood.

My problem with DiMaggio is that he sounds too undignified and overly brutish for the Joker. Obviously I'm not saying the character need to be portrayed as a gentleman, because the Joker is fundamentally not that.

But to my mind, there needs to be a certain degree of panache that goes beyond the surface elements of his flamboyant dress sense. And I don't think DiMaggio has that in him. I just hear a more dickish version of Bender.

It's the same kind of problem I had with Kevin Michael Richardson's Joker. Though that's worse, because the character's design has him looking like he's one step up from the Creeper.

I DEFINITELY get wanting Joker to have a sense of flair and theatricality to his voice, but I feel like DiMaggio still pulls off the more thuggish Joker so well.

I haven't seen him in anything, but I definitely agree with the dress sense.

If it works for other people, then that's great and I'm happy for 'em.

Me personally, just not a fan.

And to be clear, I'm not saying I want him to play the Joker (so far, he hasn't had many lines), but I think his look is ideal. Particularly if we're thinking of a silent era, "boogeyman" Joker.

You get a better look at the outfit here.

From the clips I've seen of that show, I freaking LOVE the cinematography. I'm a sucker for dramas that actually try to not look like soap operas.

And yeah, I think a more minimalistic take on the classic purple suit is the move. That way, he can stand out while still fitting in.

Since Jamie Foxx is returning to the MCU as Electro (like Simmons playing a different Jameson)...I wonder if DC will start doing this some of their actors?

This means that you don’t have to utilize a different actor for each earth version of Batman/Joker/Superman.

Henry Cavill can play a different Superman in a solo film.

Christian Bale could learn about this multi verse idea and decide to play Batman in a Dark Knight Returns adaptation in about 10 years.

A Batfleck series on HBO could allow for Leto to change his design and approach if he wants, without worrying about continuity.

And as it relates to this thread, Joaquin Phoenix could hypothetically play a version of the Joker in a sequel...set in the 1930’s. OR he could play a completely new Joker in Matt Reeves’ trilogy.

I don't think Matt Reeves will let any of that happen for his series, but DV is already trying to pull this sort of thing with Keaton essentially. I hate all of it personally, it's just blatant fan service. I'd rather them focus on making decisions that would result in the best movie, not just soulless nostalgia plays.

Not sure how to feel about Jamie Foxx returning as Electro. He's a pretty good actor, but he doesn't really feel right for the part. It kinda feels like casting DiCaprio to play Superman for instance.

The Keaton Batman universe is way too stylized for my tastes, to the point of feeling a little campy.

Color and grounded aren’t mutually exclusive.

I feel like having different actors play different versions of the same characters is just as doable as having an actor play the same character twice but not connected.

They’ve probably even talked about that, especially with the Cavill situation. But since Marvel said it out loud first, whatever DC does now is copying. Lol
