The Joker Thread - Part 1

Now you've got me thinking, what with you talking about how Wilkinson might've designed Joker with Frank Miller's TDKR version in mind, and it being his swan song or a new scene (to us anyways).....

What if it has to do with those leaked photos and/or footage of Leto's Joker we saw on his phone WAAAAY back when, a week or two before that first controversial photo was uploaded on Twitter? With him playing around with a gun while wearing a white suit???
Which photo? I don’t remember.

The reason why I think it’s a Robin death scene from Batman’s past is because 1) Ben is MUCH thinner right now. He’s even thinner than current Pattinson. So closeups would actually work wonders if he’s playing a Batman in his prime 2) ZS told a fan that JL will have another reference to Dick Grayson’s death.

I don’t want the mods to be like “back on topic!” because I actually think this relates to Reeves’ Joker. If Snyder goes full on Bowie/MIller Joker, there’s no reason for Matt Reeves to do the same in his own universe.

I don’t think Reeves would give two ****s about what Snyder does with Joker in what is likely (though who knows anymore, the Snyder Cut will probably be eviscerated and an absolute critical/audience punching bag, an Ayer Cut as well but streaming is kinda critic proof) be a one scene cameo. I am also curious if Zack alters his design though.

I just don't want all the multiverse and other interpretation stuff to dilute the reception to Reeves' movie. When Pattinson signed on he probably thought he was the clear future of the franchise, and now we have just so much going on it'll take away (for GAs at least) from the specialness of the Reeeves movie. Especially if a Joker gets shown or hinted at in movie 1 or 2. I doubt Snyder Cut will be on the radars of casual movie goers though tbh

If that is what you want to discuss regarding Snyder bringing back Leto, then keep it on that topic. There is nothing wrong with discussing how Leto's return might limit Reeves' creative options. However, this is not the to discuss Leto's return generally. I will say that my perspective on Snyder's ever expanding Justice League re-cut is as follows:

On that note, let's all move on. Only discuss Leto with respect to how it might affect Reeves' casting or his future take on the character.

It’s HBO thing mainly for fans of Snyder’s. Pattinson is the theatrical future. And that’s the version the general audience will pay attention to more.

It does dilute the specialness of the brand and honestly furthers the brutal brand damage Snyder has done to DC on film (fairly or unfairly, it’s hard to argue when even after a run of varyingly critically/financially successful films DC is still defined by the backlash to the Snyderverse) but I think you’re correct that audience interest in the Snyder Cut is heavily overstated.

True. I guess perspective has been skewed when you look at fandom receptions and discussions to these things. I really loved Affleck as Batman given the material (only thing in BvS I did enjoy although there are obvious issues with his character everyone has discussed to death) so I'm down with him returning in any capacity but absolutely not in any way that takes away from Pattinson, and I feel the same about Leto and whoever Reeves uses. Joaquin feels a lot different for some reason, more obvious to audiences that it's totally different

I really think Leto is a total nonissue for Reeves no matter what becasue people hate Leto’s Joker. Even RL everyone I know who even casually likes these type of movies hated the performance and hates Leto himself. It’s a one two punch of a bad performance and a now deeply unpopular person, performance and performer both complete laughing stocks.

Haha Yup, i have no problem dropping it. But I do think Reeves won’t touch the Dark Knight Returns style if he sees Leto’s Joker representing that interpretation next spring.

I believe we’re in for something REALLY different for Reeves’ Joker anyway. @BigBatTheory am I right?

Guys, let’s not dive into the good or bad of Leto’s performance. That’s not what this is about.

Yep. I am definitely intrigued to see what Snyder does with him though (despite my massive issues with Snyder and his edgelord mentality, I think he'll do a much better job with Leto than Ayer).

Yeah, everyone I know dislikes him in SS for sure, you're right.

Can't wait until we see Reeves' Joker direction. The best thing about Joker imo is how much of a threat he poses to Batman psychologically. I can't really imagine Leto being a genuine threat to Batfleck in the way Heath was to Bale. I'm really hoping we get a great portrayal from Reeves of a super smart and cunning Joker, less "crazy" and more just cold and elegant. I also love the "gangster" idea of Leto Joker on paper but its execution was just so ridiculous I would be down for Reeves going that route - and it'll fit with the Mad Hatter drug kingpin thing/Falcone/Penguin gang stuff for the movie imo

My theory is that Reeves’ Joker was an ex-employee/chemist for Ace Chemicals. Not a gangster. Not a professional clown. Not a failed stand up comedian. Not a (possible) former soldier. Not a club owner or pimp.

Chemist could be interesting and make him super smart, although it might be falling into line of a lot of other random comic book characters that are scientists or whatever, which might make it less unique. Definitely agree that it would be nice to not get the clown/comedian/military thing again.

I'd really love it if they just never explain what he is, he just shows up one day and is the true wildcard to the criminal world in Gotham, everyone is afraid of him - including other criminals and gangs. In TDK he works with them (I know he has his own plan and uses them, but he still has ties to them and talks with the mob) but in this maybe he's truly just on his own? I love the TDK force of nature idea, but remove any of the hints about a backstory entirely. I also don't really dig when Joker becomes super deranged like in Scott Snyder's Endgame, for example.

That's probs what I'd like to see (but I'm down with most directions tbh). I don't really find Joker as a character interesting at all, the interesting bit for me comes out of the moral positions he puts Batman in, so that's why I'd prefer no backstory at all and he's just straight up plopped there, current gangster, anarchist or not.

I think the idea of him having some kind of involvement with that "drop" drug from the set photos could be interesting.

Yeah, to clarify, that the warning was meant for everyone in here as whole. Your posts were well-within topic. I just quoted you since you brought up the concern in a very timely fashion. My use of the word "you" was in the plural sense to refer to everyone in here.

yall people seem so sure reeves will bring joker to his "Batman Story arc " without even having a source to back it Up, maybe there's a possibility where's he's not interested by that character ? when & where's did he said something about joker ?

as for leto back as joker its great for him, he was trash in suicide squad, he can redeem himself with a better director....ayer not that great with direction
