* “My brother is writing a script for me and we’ll wait to see how it turns out...he’s struggling to put it together into the epic story that you want it to be.”
* “Without getting into specifics [on the story], the key thing that makes the third an great possibility for us is that we want to finish our story. And in viewing it as the finishing of a story rather than infinitely blowing up the balloon and expanding the story.”
* “We have a great ensemble [cast], that’s one of the attractions of doing another film, since we’ve been having a great time for years.” * “I’m very excited about the end of the film, the conclusion, and what we’ve done with the characters. My brother has come up with some pretty exciting stuff. Unlike the comics, these thing don’t go on forever in film and viewing it as a story with an end is useful. Viewing it as an ending, that sets you very much on the right track about the appropriate conclusion and the essence of what tale we’re telling. And it hearkens back to that priority of trying to find the reality in these fantastic . That’s what we do.”

After reading Nolans February interview I firmly believe the Joker will be back. (I believe we'll see many classic villans in some form or other, going from a theme of escalation to "explosion"). Nolan's talking about ending the story, he's talking about the story being epic. As far as I'm concerned no Batman trilogy can end without the inclusion of the Joker. How will he do it? Maybe he'll do a Dr. Parnassus and have a few actors in the role. or maybe he's found someone that can bring their own compeling interpretation (maybe from the Inception cast?). I think Nolan will bring the Joker back pull it off brilliantly......

I don't think the Joker will be back.

The difference between this and Dr Parnassus is that it had not been released yet, and the public had not seen Heath's performance in the movie, so it was ok to finish off the movie using other actors in his role.

With TDK, everyone's seen it, grown to love his performance as the Joker, and he even scooped an Oscar for it. I just don't see Nolan recasting the Joker in the next sequel out of respect for Heath.

Don't know if I agree with it, because I'd love to see the Joker again, but at the same time it'd be wierd seeing someone else in Nolan's universe playing the Joker. Heath really made the role his own.

Pleas no!
I like to see other Batman Villains interpreted by Nolan.
Getting the Joker again would be redundant and boring

I'm not even nessesarily talking a full on appearance...it could even be in an end cap; Joker walking right out the front door of Arkham, in a scene where we mostlyy see the camera follow him from the back, taking people out as he walks down the hall the last thing we see is his face a frozen image que echoing laughter end of movie. It could even be un-used footage. I just believe we'll see Joker in some way....

I would like to see Joker return for the third Batman film. Joker is the ultimate Bat-villain so it makes sense for him to appear in the finale of Nolan's trilogy.

I would like Batman to realise that whilst Joker still breathes, Gotham will always be under threat. As Batman refuses to break his one rule, he should feel it is his duty to protect Gotham. The third film should end with Batman standing on top of a building, looking down on Gotham, ready to take on whatever threat comes his way.

By the end of the third film, Batman should become a legend to Gotham.

Cameo.

Maybe several throughout the movie. His trial at the beginning that determines he's completely insane, and tosses him into Arkham.

a few of Joker in a Magneto/Hannibal Lecter-like cell, and Batman visiting him every morning to make sure he's still there.

And then, at the end, Joker breaks out. Batman's in the new cave, suited up, but without the mask on. An alarm sounds in the cave signaling that Joker has broken out of Arkham and is holding a building of people hostage. Batman puts on the mask, jumps in the new batmobile, and races off toward the city, the brand new Batsignal shining bright in the sky.

Joker doesn't need to be a main player in this movie.

I'm fairly confident that The Joker, in some form, will be in Batman 3. Whether an actor is recast seems very doubtful.

I don't think we'll see or even really hear about the Joker as an active character in the next Batman film...but the effects of what he did in TDK should probably be the backdrop of the main storyline...e.g., Batman being a top fugitive, decapitated organized crime factions, etc.

From reading these posts it seems that you all want the series to end with the third movie to cap off the trilogy.

Personally I'd like to see more Batman films with Christian Bale if not with Nolan than perhaps with another director for a second trilogy of movies 4, 5, 6.

A shoe-in? Not at all. If he's seen in the flesh it will likely be a cameo on a passing TV screen displaying his trial or something. But I'm sure he will be felt so-to-speak in the story, and I could easily see the film ending with him breaking out of prison off-screen, in a call-back to the last scene of Begins.

I don't think Nolan's going to end the third movie with any kind of teaser or cliff-hanger, just because that would leave the next director in the awkward position of having to continue a particular storyline. My feeling is that we won't see the Joker at all in B3, only the effects of his terror spree.

Because I'm sure Nolan felt a lot of pressure to include Robin and Batgirl from Batman and Robin in his first Batman movie too.

He's be back and played by Tom Cruise. Just think about it

Bank Teller: I'll never open the vault!

Joker: SHOW ME THE MONEY!!!!

Bank Teller: What if I don't open it?

Joker: Don't worry, I'm not gonna do what you all think I'm gonna do, which is, you know, FLIP OUT!

Bank Teller: You're weirding me out.

Joker: You had me at hello.

I think the Joker will be back. Heath Ledger is not the Joker. He portrayed a character. The Joker is Batman's arch-nemesis, the ying yang, always on the opposite side of the spectrum, the splinter in Batman's mind. You can replace the actor, but you can't replace the Joker character. The character needs to have a role in the third installment.

Whether or not we actually see a new actor portray The Joker is up to Nolan and Co. even so, since we've already seen The Joker as the main villain, I think The Riddler is going to be the main baddy in the third and final movie. Think about it. We have yet to see a sick and twisted Riddler on film. There's some serious potential with that. I firmly believe that the third film, hands down, will be the most psychologically disturbing and darkest one of them all.

If Nolan's plan is to close the story with its third movie, then Joker needs to be there. I have zero problem with recast, considering the character has a messy make-up all over the face.

i would like to see him return, but idk if its gonna happen.

no one really knows what villains will be in, other than mr freeze of course.

I agree.

If Chris Nolan really means what he says, where he claims that his third Batman movie will be an end to his trilogy, rather than a further expansion of it, then there is really no choice but to have The Joker appear. No other super villains can be introduced, as that would be expanding the narrative. Two Face was a one-trick pony who was killed off. Ra's al Ghul was killed off. Can the great finale really have just Mr Zsasz and Dr Crane, with a sack on his head, as its catalysts?

I don't think so. If Nolan's words are to be taken at face value, then The Joker is the sole option for the third movie's primary agitant. As it is, I think Chris Nolan is quite loose with words, and what he really means is that he is going to both introduce and kill off more characters.

There very well might be a lame third movie and an end of the story. That is far from the point though.
