Kick-Ass is not the first film in which an every day joe ,without any super powers,or any particular fighting skills, dons a mask and decides to fight for truth, justice, and the American way.
I fondly thought of the films Hero at Large, and the recently released Defendor.
But KA'S adult themes, intense action, and sharp script filled with parody makes it a standout among the aforementioned film.
This time around our every day joe is Dave Lizewski (Aaron Johnson) in a voice over he informs us that he's nothing special,he has a couple of buds, likes comics, has fantasies about his voluptuous teacher, surfs the web and has a thing for Katie Deauxma (Lyndsy Fonseca).
After he and his friend Todd(Evan Peters )are mugged again Dave sends for a green wetsuit with yellow piping ,trains for a bit and hits the streets to fight crime.
Things go badly when he attempts to stop 2 car jackers,he's severely injured, survives but trains again, this time people witness his heroic feat of saving a guy from thugs and Dave becomes Kick-Ass and and internet sensation.
But he isnt the only hero around Damon Macready/Big-Daddy (Nicholas Cage) think Batman with an arsenaland his daugter Mindy/Hit-Girl (Chloe Moretz) think Gogo Yubari from Kill Bill and Katana.
They have been a thorn in the side of mob boss Frank D’Amico (Mark Strong) for a bit
and once they come in contact with Kick-Ass he's soon on the radar of D'amico too.
The determination of Dave is one of the greatest things about KA,you cant help but root for a guy who takes a licking and keeps on ticking and he's wonderfully portrayed by Johnson.
Cage and Moretz are great as the father and daughter team, from her training to their love of weapons, and buying gadgets on the internet each scene with them is funny and sharp.I also loved their illustrated origin by John Romita, Jr in the film
Christopher Mintz-Plasse was pretty funny as Red Mist cant say to much about the character because it will give to much away.
Moretz is a standout, 13 years old in real life 11 in the movie, she spits out curse words as she flips around and dispatches villains with ease, which is why some critics are balking over this and even i must say keep the kids away.
The film has great nods,to Superman,Batman, and the X-men and even to lame Super Hero films like The Spirit.
KA also displays the effect's the internet and technology have on the modern day hero.
Strong is ok as the mob boss, but i was bored with the antics of his henchmanIn my opinion thy were just around to be taken out in various blodd ways by Big Daddy and Hit Girl.
Although im not a big collector of comic books anymore,on occasion i pick up a CB with a good story that intrigues me,or if its the work of Garth Ennis(Hitman,The Boys)
I will definitely read the comic book Kick-Ass on which the film is based written by Mark Millar and illustrated by John Romita, Jr(yeah yeah,i should have read the book first, but i didnt want the film spoiled)
The fact that im seeking out the comic says a lot about the film
Scale of 1-10 a 9
