The Kick-Ass Thread

Kick-Ass is not the first film in which an every day joe ,without any super powers,or any particular fighting skills, dons a mask and decides to fight for truth, justice, and the American way.
I fondly thought of the films Hero at Large, and the recently released Defendor.
But KA'S adult themes, intense action, and sharp script filled with parody makes it a standout among the aforementioned film.
This time around our every day joe is Dave Lizewski (Aaron Johnson) in a voice over he informs us that he's nothing special,he has a couple of buds, likes comics, has fantasies about his voluptuous teacher, surfs the web and has a thing for Katie Deauxma (Lyndsy Fonseca).
After he and his friend Todd(Evan Peters )are mugged again Dave sends for a green wetsuit with yellow piping ,trains for a bit and hits the streets to fight crime.
Things go badly when he attempts to stop 2 car jackers,he's severely injured, survives but trains again, this time people witness his heroic feat of saving a guy from thugs and Dave becomes Kick-Ass and and internet sensation.
But he isnt the only hero around Damon Macready/Big-Daddy (Nicholas Cage) think Batman with an arsenaland his daugter Mindy/Hit-Girl (Chloe Moretz) think Gogo Yubari from Kill Bill and Katana.
They have been a thorn in the side of mob boss Frank D’Amico (Mark Strong) for a bit
and once they come in contact with Kick-Ass he's soon on the radar of D'amico too.

The determination of Dave is one of the greatest things about KA,you cant help but root for a guy who takes a licking and keeps on ticking and he's wonderfully portrayed by Johnson.
Cage and Moretz are great as the father and daughter team, from her training to their love of weapons, and buying gadgets on the internet each scene with them is funny and sharp.I also loved their illustrated origin by John Romita, Jr in the film
Christopher Mintz-Plasse was pretty funny as Red Mist cant say to much about the character because it will give to much away.
Moretz is a standout, 13 years old in real life 11 in the movie, she spits out curse words as she flips around and dispatches villains with ease, which is why some critics are balking over this and even i must say keep the kids away.
The film has great nods,to Superman,Batman, and the X-men and even to lame Super Hero films like The Spirit.
KA also displays the effect's the internet and technology have on the modern day hero.
Strong is ok as the mob boss, but i was bored with the antics of his henchmanIn my opinion thy were just around to be taken out in various blodd ways by Big Daddy and Hit Girl.
Although im not a big collector of comic books anymore,on occasion i pick up a CB with a good story that intrigues me,or if its the work of Garth Ennis(Hitman,The Boys)
I will definitely read the comic book Kick-Ass on which the film is based written by Mark Millar and illustrated by John Romita, Jr(yeah yeah,i should have read the book first, but i didnt want the film spoiled)
The fact that im seeking out the comic says a lot about the film
Scale of 1-10 a 9

Can anyone provide a transcript of
Big Daddy's lines just before his death, when he was shouting while hit-girl was taking out the henchmen.
I didn't catch that part.

"Take cover child" is one of them.

Well, just finished reading the graphic novel earlier today, and I enjoyed the movie much more, the writing in the movie seems so much better, as do certain scene's, one of the rare occasions a movie has surpassed the material it is based on.

The changes made for the movie were also so much better, keeping the revenge angle for BD and HG rather than it being something BD made up was so much more powerful, Vaughn did very well changing this one and many others.

I agree. Also in the movie
BD is a much more likeable character, as opposed to the comics. I liked his Movie-Death more too, was more tragic. Although, I do like how in the comic HG goes from this badass little girl, to after killing genovese, turns to dave and asks "can I have a hug?":csad:

One difference that I liked was that

Big Daddy's origin was complete BS. That in the end everyone was a dork in a costume just like everyone else.

Still, the movie pulled it off much better, but both comic and movie have unique qualities that make them both worth having.

just saw it and i lvoed it when kick ass saves the guy from those 3 thugs is my favorite scene great acting by AJ

That exchange at the end of the fight has gotta go down as one of my favourite quotes ever.

"3 *******s laying into one guy? Whilst everyone else just watches? And you wanna know what's wrong with me!?!?! Yea, i'd rather die... so bring it on!"

So powerful and utterly brilliant acting by Johnson.

Aaron is definitely going places
Absolutely brilliant scenes throughout the film
I think i'm gonna rent Bad Lt. tonight now that its been mentioned a couple times...hmm

I think of that as the moment that Dave becomes the hero, leaving the end where he becomes a superhero.

Just reading it but a smile on my face and goosebumps on my arms. Can't wait to get this on Blu and play it over and over. Just like someone said. Dark Knight is a better movie, but Kick-Ass I can watch over and over easier.

My thoughts on part 2 is, if it gets made cool, if not i'm ok with this one standing on it's on.

Ok, so I realize I may be in the minority here, but I've decided I definitely want a sequel. And to those who say, "we've seen all there is to see, the story is complete," I say, nonsense! Dave himself said said at the end that he "opened the door" to a world he'd only dreamed about. I want to walk through that door, because there's so much I want to see now that we didn't even get a glimpse of in this one (SPOILER WARNING, obviously):

1.) The other amateur heroes he "inspired." C'mon, how can that not be fun? I want to see someone other than the guy with the mental health problems we met in the beginning, and what kind of "heroic acts" they are performing. Unleash the psychos.

2.) Hit-Girl's attempt at normalcy. With Chloe's age, they'd probably have to set a sequel about 2 years after this one, which means Hit-Girl would be approaching the most awkward social stage of her life (I'm a girl, trust me, I know), while still new to the concept of even HAVING a social life. How would this girl who could massacre 20 gangsters at a time handle the vicious shark pool that is Teen Girl World? How would she handle her 1st crush (who, let's be honest, would probably treat her like crap/break her heart)? Certainly a little differently than a typical girl, and that could be both hilarious and sad. Plus, it would be nice to see a little role-reversal with Dave, since "normalcy" is more his area of expertise, so he would get a chance to assume the "mentor" role on that front. Most importantly, how would her extremely traumatic youth (including the events of this movie) start to catch up with her? Because let's face it, psychologically, she's messed up for life. Marcus was right - she WAS brainwashed. What happens after the source of that is gone? The de-programming and PTSD would definitely be an issue, and a potentially fascinating one. Not that they have to delve too deeply into it, but they should at least touch on it like they touched on the whole child abuse issue in this one. And OF COURSE, what will pull her back into the vigilante game? She needs to come into her own, with her own drive, free of her father's obsession. ([blackout]Red Mist[/blackout] will likely help out with that one.)

Frankly, any story arc for her as this trained killer attempting to be a normal girl while facing all the typical growing pains would be rife with comedic and tragic potential. She's just an awesome character that way. And she can still have plenty of badass fights in the mean time. Which brings me to....

3.) Hit-Girl needs to train Kick-Ass. It's just gotta happen. That would be SO fun to watch, and necessary from a character perspective for KA to stay in the game.

4.) And finally, I really want to see what [blackout]Red Mist[/blackout] would be like as a villain. I mean, everyone assumes he'd be kind of a joke, but with two years to build up and plan his revenge, with his resources and drive, he could be really formidable. But he'd still be funny too, cuz ya know, he still talks like that...I just keep picturing a darker version of Syndrome from The Incredibles for some reason, lol. But seriously, I wanna see these "superheroes" fight a "supervillain" in this universe.

So yeah, I realize the possibility of a sequel seems a bit unlikely now, but oh well. I still want one. And for the record, someone a few pages back said they thought Aaron Johnson wouldn't want to do one, but according to this interview from the Chicago premiere, that's not true:

And LOL at it not even occurring to that reporter that a History of Violence reference just might go over-the-head of a 13-year-old girl.

And WOW, this post ended up a lot longer than I had planned.

That was long. ;) :oldrazz:

But I would like to see a sequel if they can come up with a good story. I agree it has something to do with a ton of (stupid) superheroes and supervillains running around and making fools of themselves, save of course for Hit Girl. I don't know what should pull them out of retirement, but it may have something to do with Big Daddy's reputation with Red Mist figuring out who BD was and trying to reveal it. As long as she can kick his proverbial ass.

I do think that Mindy and Dave should have an evolving relationship. I would strongly oppose exploring her crushing on him (at least until a possible third installment when she'd be 16-18, at least) but a big brother/little sister thing would work. With him trying to keep her from killing anyone at school and acting sociable, while she teaches him how not to get his ass kicked in every fight he gets into.

But I don't think it should deal with Mindy having "girl problems" or PTSD. I don't want to see her questioning whether killing people are wrong, having nightmares about it and feeling unpopular for being picked on. They can touch on her being socially out of step with the world due to her brainwashing, but like in the first movie, it should be acknowledged but not the point of her character. What BD did to her was wrong, but she she should not be an angsty teenager dealing with past traumas or alienation.

I'd prefer more of her being somewhat isolated in school because when the "mean girls" try to screw with her, she breaks their noses and Dave has to keep excusing her actions. But she should remain a supporting character who exudes awesomeness, with a hint of tragedy. But I don't want to see her become a "normal teenager" like Dave and dealing with boredom, bullies, the opposite sex, etc. in a serious way. That would just take away what makes her character so likable and pushes her closer to being like Peter Parker--like Dave. While a female Peter Parker would be interesting, I don't want it to be HG.

BTW one of the three deleted scenes involves her and BD singing. I heard in an interview (it is on YT) that BD creepily started singing "We will be victorious" and then commanded her to harmonize and sing in tenor, etc. She mimicked it in the interview, it was hilarious.

I personally don't know where this stands on my top comic book movies list, I don't really want to say anything until my hype over it has blown over. Still, given what I think of it right now, I'd say it's somewhere in my top 3 alongside TDK and Watchmen.

I'm most offended by X3 and Batman Forever being on that....and Incredibles isn't a comic book movie. :oldrazz:

As for Kick-Ass being in IMDB's top 250...eh, it is fanboy hype. I don't think it deserves to be in the top 250 (the only comic book movie that does is The Dark Knight, imo) but good to see it getting some love somewhere. I would hope it would get more people to actually see the movie.

Sued!!! :woot: J/k

My personal top 10:

1. TDK
2. Kick-Ass
3. Spiderman 2
4. Batman Begins
5. Watchmen
6. 300
7. Iron Man
8. The Incredible Hulk
9. X2
10.Spiderman

Yah, mine changes alot... the only thing thats consistent is TDK is #1. I think Spiderman 2 and Batman Begins are probably the best movies after TDK, but as far as my personal favorite, Kick-Ass is higher on the list. Also, I'd say X2 and Iron Man are probably better made films than 300, but again, personal opinion has 300 above them.

Batman forever while flawed, is a good addition to the original franchise. X3 is good, but not anywhere near as good as X1/X2, it also needed to be about 40 minutes longer. 90 minutes my ass... and incredibles had superheroes..hence my count:hehe:
